More than 2000 teachers took an online survey. Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “ mostly positive” effect on their students’ research habits and skills. But 64 percent said the technologies “ do more to distract (使分心) students than to help them academically.” And 87 percent agreed that these technologies are creating an “ easily distracted generation with short attention spans.”
The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is the vice director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more and faster. “ Teachers really favor these tools because they are ways to make some of the learning exciting and engaging. Young people favor these tools. The goal is to really help them become creators of meaningful content, and not just sort of consumers.”
But one problem the survey found is that many students lack digital literacy. They trust too much of the information they find on the Internet. Judy says these students haven’t developed the skills to determine the quality of online information. “ It’s something that really has to be taught and paid attention to, because in a world in which things happen quickly, you do need to step back, reflect and analyze the information you have.”
Another problem is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the result is a reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research libraries.
Many teachers are also concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

阅读下列四篇短文, 从每小题后所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。LAST week, the College Board announced that it was revising the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) in an effort to make it more acceptable to test-takers, teachers, college admission officers and the public more generally. Test-takers who receive lower scores than they have hoped for are likely to be concerned about their academic future. It’s no wonder that it’s hard to discuss the test without negative feelings.
The SAT isn’t perfect. Like any test, it can be misused, and may reflect unequal educational opportunities. Even before the announcement of the SAT’s redesign, experts were discussing the test’s limitations. Writing in The New Yorker, Elizabeth Kolbert described its questions as limited: “Critical thinking was never called for, let alone curiosity or imagination.” But the SAT provides an effective measure of a person’s ability to reason through verbal(文字性的) and mathematical materials, a skill required in college. Although there are conflicting reports on the issue, a study published in the journal Educational and Psychological Measurement in 2011 found that the SAT can meaningfully add to the prediction of a student’s first-year college academic performance, above his grades in high school alone. The fact that the SAT can help predict this is, to me, an astonishing achievement that cannot be ignored.
We cannot afford to ignore tests because they fall short of perfection or make us uncomfortable. But there’s a better way to make the SAT more acceptable in the long run: We should expand the types of tests we use so as to more fully reflect what students can do. What if, in addition to the SAT, students were offered new tests that measured more diverse abilities? For future artists or musicians, there are tests that measure creative thinking —a largely ignored ability by the SAT. For future engineers, there are tests that measure their sense of space. And new measures of “personal intelligence” — the ability to reason about a person’s motives, emotions and patterns of activities — may also tell us something important about students’ self-knowledge and understanding of others.
53. Why is it difficult for the test takers to discuss the test without negative feelings?
A. The SAT is unacceptable for the test takers, teachers, officers and the public.
B. They may not get satisfactory scores and it influences their admission to college.
C. The SAT can’t reflect their creative thinking, curiosity as well as their imagination.
D. The board don’t know how to make the SAT more suitable for the test takers.
54. Elizabeth Kolbert may consider the SAT to be _________.
A. imaginative
B. creative
C. critical
D. limited
55. According to the text, the author may disagree with the idea that _________.
A. the SAT can at some point predict how a student will do in the freshman year of college academically
B. the SAT helps measure students’ ability of reasoning through their creativity and imagination
C. the SAT will be more acceptable if creative thinking, sense of space and personal intelligence are tested as well
D. the SAT has many limitations and it may make a difference to students’ educational opportunities

A. Sports

阅读下列四篇短文, 从每小题后所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。Food picked up just a few seconds after being dropped is less likely to contain bacteria than if it is left for longer periods of time, according to the findings of research carried out at Aston University’s School of Life and Health Sciences. The findings suggest there may be some scientific basis to the “5 second rule” – the belief about it being fine to eat food that has only had contact with the floor for five seconds or less. Although people have long followed the 5 second rule, until now it was unclear whether it actually helped.
The study, undertaken by final year Biology students and led by Anthony Hilton, Professor of Microbiology at Aston University, monitored the transfer of the common bacteria from a variety of indoor flooring types (carpet, cement floor etc.) to toast, pasta, a biscuit and a sticky sweet when contact was made from 3 to 30 seconds. The results showed that: Time is a significant factor in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food; and the type of flooring the food has been dropped on has an effect, with bacteria least likely to transfer from carpeted surfaces and most likely to transfer from cement flooring surfaces to moist(湿的 foods making contact for more than 5 seconds. Professor Hilton said: “Consuming food dropped on the floor still carries an infection risk as it very much depends on which bacteria are present on the floor at the time.”
The Aston team also carried out a survey of the number of people who employ the 5 second rule. The survey showed that: 87% of people surveyed said they would eat food dropped on the floor, or already have done so. 55% of those who would eat or have eaten food dropped on the floor are women. 81% of the women who would eat food from the floor would follow the 5 second rule. Professor Hilton added, “Our study showed that a surprisingly large majority of people are happy to consume dropped food, with women the most likely to do so. But they are also more likely to follow the 5 second rule.”
According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. A toast dropped on the carpet is easier to be polluted than that dropped on the cement floor.
B. A sticky chocolate dropped on the carpet is easier to be polluted than that dropped on the cement floor within 5 seconds.
The food dropped on the carpet shares the same potential of being polluted with the food dropped on the cement floor.
The food dropped on the cement floor is not as safe as food dropped on the carpet within 30 seconds.
58. Eating food dropped on the floor still carries an infection risk because it relies on _________ at that time.
A. the type of bacteria
B. the carpet
C. the cement floor
D. the surface of table
59. The passage is developed probably by __________.
time
B. space
C. contrast
D. example
60. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The food which is dropped on the floor can be eaten safely.
B. The bacteria have no negative effect on the safety of food.
C. A research on the safety of food dropped on the floor is undertaken.
D. People surveyed in the research are willing to accept the idea.
