What can you do when you are unhappy? If you want to let out your anger or pressure by breaking things, you just do. Now a school in Nanjing has built a “stress wall” to help students who feel unhappy due to heavy schoolwork or for other reasons.

The leader of the school said the idea of a stress wall started when footprints were found on some newly painted walls and some school windows were broken.

“These things happen because some students feel lots of pressure from their studies or because they don’t get along well with other students. When under stress, the body gets ready to either run or fight and becomes very nervous. Hitting the wall can help relax the body and take away stress,” he said.

“Tests and homework make me sad,” said a junior girl, “I can’t wait to hit the wall. It will help me a lot with my problems.” However, another girl student who wouldn’t give her name said,” The wall won’t help because it can’t talk,” and she added,” I need to talk to someone when I’m sad.”

The passage conveys to us that to help students with stress, a school built a “stress wall” for students to relax, towards which students hold different opinions.

Nowadays, students are under great pressure, mainly coming from their school work as well as peer relationship.

As far as I am concerned, building a stress wall is not appropriate. For one thing, even if students punch the wall heavily, the true stress in the bottom of their hearts can not be let out. For another, this may lead to the results of solving a problem with violence of fixing a bad temper, which has bad effects on their health growth.

In order to decrease our stress, here are my suggestions. To begin with, we can design more outdoor activities for students to get rid of the stress. What’s more, it is strongly suggested that we can take part in some sports events, which can surely help students out of stress and improve their health at the same time. All in all, only when we let out the stress properly can we live a happy school life.

When Samuel, our only son, was eight he wrote an article entitled, “How to Be Good.” It still brings a smile to my face as I recall this young boy's wisdom. He followed his own policy and obeyed his mum and me. To our amazement, as a little child, Samuel seemed to recognize us parents as his natural guardians (监护人) who he should obey. And he was right.

Generally speaking, in the eyes of young children, parents certainly have been given the authority and responsibility to protect them—innocent children—whether they are five or fifteen. They usually obey their parents, so the parents may discipline and instruct them easily. When children are younger, a parent can establish much more control over their lives. But how can we parents deal with teenagers when they become tough and disobeyed in adolescence(青春期)? As Samuel has grown up, he becomes informed, like any other teenagers. They need more desire for friendship, acceptance and freedom. When it comes to an easy target for teenagers to try dishonest schemes, what should a parent do with them?

Well, Samuel's mother and I are not perfect parents. Yet it’s comforting to know that our instruction changes a little with his new culture. We desire that Samuel know wisdom, instruction and consideration, and receive our instruction in a wise, right and fair way. If so, this can’t be much any better!

  1. As a child, Samuel obeyed parents because he recognized them as his guardians. But as a teenager now, he disobeys them because he desires friendship, acceptance and freedom, but parents desire for his healthy growth. (36 words)

  2. As a boy, Samuel obeyed parents, considering parents as his guardians. But when growing into a teenager, he becomes disobeyed like other children, because they desire friendship, acceptance and freedom, which causes parents worry and expectation. (36)

Naturally, children may have the similar experience in their growth process. In childhood they obey parents while in adolescence they disobey. This change accounts for a stage of development from childhood to adulthood. In my teens I followed parents and never talked back. Mum always wondered when I was coming home, or where I was going. One day, as my classmate fell ill, I looked after him, so I came home late. Mum felt nervous and asked why.

Being parents, they should trust, understand and support children. As children become informed, parents should show respect for them, encourage them to make friends, become independent and distinguish right from wrong. Only with the help and encouragement of parents can children live a healthy and happy life. (125 words)

It was the summer of 1998 and I was trying to study hard for my engineering degree. I went up to the roof for a break and watched people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day. But as I looked into the distance, I discovered a series of three or four big waves racing towards the shore. They must have been at least four meters high and were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. From the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

Without thinking, I held my bodyboard (冲浪板) and shouted at a stranger to call the lifeguards (救生员). My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the sea.

Once we got closer, we discovered two people floating about 400 meters out. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I didn't think twice about trying to save them. When we finally reached them 10 minutes later, they were almost lifeless, pale and motionless. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths. We put them on our boards, patted their faces to wake them up, telling them to be strong, all the while swimming hard to keep ourselves afloat.

Thirty minutes later, I began to feel a bit afraid and tired. Finally, a small boat with three lifeguards headed towards us. When the boat pulled up, we helped push the couple on board, only to be told that there was no room for us. It seemed pretty unprofessional (不专业的) to leave us there—we were a couple of miles from the shore.

I didn't feel like a hero. I'm sure that anyone who could swim would have done the same thing.

1.What can we learn from the passage?

A.A stranger asked the writer to call the lifeguards.

B.The writer was afraid and regretted the rescue.

C.The writer told from the screams that someone needed help.

D.A neighbor and the writer rushed to the sea with nothing in hand.

根据第一段最后一句“From the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.”

2.Upon getting close to them, the writer found that the two people ________.

  A.had been saved by others

  B.were struggling in the sea

  C.were dying

  D.were crying for help loudly

根据第三段第四句“When we finally reached them 10 minutes later, they were almost lifeless, pale and motionless.”

3.From Paragraph 4 we can infer that the writer thought ________.

A.people in need don't come first

B.they were too tired to swim back

  C.waiting for help wasn't a choice

D.the lifeguards should make room for them

You’ve flown halfway around the world; you’ve sniffed out this place that nobody in Falongland or Thailand seems to have ever heard of; so what on earth is there to do here? You consider this question as you sink into an old wooden beach chair that holds you above the sand.

It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee. By the time you found the bus station and got yourself sorted out, it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland.

Huaplee is located just south of Hua Hin, about two hundred kilometres from Bangkok, down the west side of the Gulf of Thailand. Not many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder if finding it has been their purpose all along.

There’s an apparent laziness that surrounds you here. It’s what this place offers, and it’s free of charge. The small waves that tap the shoreline seem to slow everything down. You settle into your beach chair in preparation for a long rest. You sit there and watch the sea.

It’s early afternoon, so the cook comes out and asks what you’d like to eat this evening. Before long he’s rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered—every meal fresh and to order. No menu here.

There is no poolside noise here but just that wonderfully warm, clear blue sea. There’s no street noise. The only sounds are the murmurs of nature.

For now you just count your blessings (福祉), listing them in the sand with your toe (脚趾). You don’t have to worry about being late for work. You don’t have to do anything.

The beach to your right stretches off to the horizon (地平线), slowly narrowing to nothingness only to re-emerge again on your left, now steadily widening until it covers the chair beneath you. Sand to your left and sand to your right; it’s unbroken, endless. No start, no end, just sand, sun, and peace. Step off it, and you re-enter the world of traffic, stress, work, and hurry.

Normally you’re the type who can’t sit still for more than ten minutes, but you’re on Huaplee Lazy Beach now and, in the right frame of mind, it stretches all the way around the world.

“How could it take me so long to find it?” you wonder.

  1. When the author first went to Huaplee Beach, ______.

  A. he found it unworthwhile

  B. he failed to sort himself out

  C. he became sensitive to smell

  D. he had difficulty in finding it

  2. What is special about the food service at Huaplee Beach?

  A. No menu.

  B. Free food.

  C. Self service.

  D. Quick delivery.

  3. In the author’s opinion, a tourist can enjoy Huaplee Beach most when he ______.

  A. sits in a beach chair

  B. forgets his daily routine

  C. plans a detailed schedule

  D. draws pictures in the sand

  4. What does the author imply by his question at the end of the passage?

  A. He shouldn’t have counted his blessings.

  B. He should have understood the wonder of nature.

  C. He shouldn’t have spent so much time on the trip.

  D. He should have come to the place earlier.

It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee. By the time you found the bus station and got yourself sorted out, it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland.和Not many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder if finding it has been their purpose all along.

  2. A。 It’s early afternoon, so the cook comes out and asks what you’d like to eat this evening. Before long he’s rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered—every meal fresh and to order. No menu here.

Normally you’re the type who can’t sit still for more than ten minutes, but you’re on Huaplee Lazy Beach now and, in the right frame of mind, it stretches all the way around the world.
