　　William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13,1865. His childhood lacked the harmony (和睦) that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama (戏剧) and poetry.

　　Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s.His early theatrical experiments，however，were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn't lose heart，and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.

　　Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats's poems attract much admiring notice.The subject matter includes love，nature，history，time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.

　　He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923.Yet，he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40，he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. After Yeats's death in 1939, W．H. Auden wrote, among others, the following lines：

　　Earlier this year，Luke and Ryan—with help from their parents—sent an application to Guinness. They added birth certificates，photos，and proof that all of the sets of twins attend Highcrest Middle School. They expected to hear back in several weeks on whether they actually set a new world record.

　　Since 1980，twin birth rates have more than doubled in the United States，according to the Centers for Disease Control(CDC). The age of mothers has gone up over the years，and women in their 30s are more likely to give birth to twins. In 2009，one in every 30 infants was born a twin，compared with one in 53 infants in 1980.

　　For Highcrest Middle School，the rise in twin births could be a ticket into the record books. Dave Palzet，the school's principal，said he is proud of his students' effort.“I think it is wonderful that they have taken it on themselves to research and work with the world record officials to obtain this great honor for Highcrest Middle School，”he said.

　　It’s hot out.The usual midday thunderstorm has just passed，and a few kids hanging out on benches around the pool at Miami’s Ransom Everglades School finally jump in and cool off.

　　Eight­year­old Gary Kendrick and the others are all here for swim lessons.“They told us to hold on to the wall and kick our feet and，like，move our arms，”Kendrick says.“When I had to swim to one of the counselors，I was really swimming.I do not even know I was moving.”

　　Kendrick doesn’t have the technique of an Olympic swimmer，but he can make it to the side of a pool if he’s pushed，falls in，or just wants to cool off.Kendrick is one of a handful of kids from South Miami to get free swim lessons at Ransom Everglades.

　　“You know，we have populations of people who lack basic swim skills，”says Julie Gilchrist.“In swimming pools...presumably，you know where the bottom is，you know where the sides are，” she says.“And so one would think that with basic swim skills it should be difficult for an older child or teen to drown in a swimming pool.And yet that’s what we were seeing among African­Americans.”

　　Swimming pool drowning rates among school­aged black children are more than five times higher than they are among white kids the same age.Why？There are many reasons，but one big one.“Kids who are living in public housing，growing up where finance is a real problem，single­mother households，opportunities for just having access to a pool are limited.”

　　After four decades of work to get a pool built，Codrington is finally getting one，in the heart of South Miami.Codrington calls it a “mixed bag”．He wishes the new pool were bigger—to accommodate things like swim meets and lifeguard lessons.But he’s satisfied knowing that it’ll be a place where neighborhood kids can learn to swim.

　　Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that things generally turn out for the best? 　　Now a book has been published which confirms what pessimists(悲观者)have suspected all along. it's called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the tings by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What's interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation's outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better.”

　　So far，so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don't put all your eggs in one basket.”

　　And “Don't count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life's problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says ,”Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”
