The building itself stands on a marble platform, 29 square meters and 6-7 meters high. Towers rise from each of the four corners. The Taj itself soars another 61 meters into the air. It is an eight-sided building made of white marble.

The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river connected by a silver bridge. Ⅵ.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, many people thought that the American family was falling apart. A century later, we know that this was not the case. However, although the family is still alive in the United States, its size and shape were very different 100 years ago.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were mainly two types of families in the United States: the extended and the nuclear. The extended family usually includes grandparents, parents, and children living under the same roof. The nuclear family consists of only parents and children.

Today there are many different kinds of families. Some people live in 搕raditional?families, that is, a stay-homfae mother, a working father, and their own biological children. Others live in two-paycheck families, single-parent families, adoptive or foster families, blended families (where men and women who were married before marry again and combine the children from previous marriages into the new families),childless families, and so on.

What caused the structure of the family to change? In the early 1900s the birthrate began to fall and the divorce rate began to rise. Women were suddenly choosing to go to college and take jobs outside the home. In the 1930s and 1940s, many families faced serious financial, or money problems during the Great Depression, when many people lost their jobs. During World War Ⅱ(1939—1945),5 million women were left alone to take care of their homes and their children. Because many men were at war, thousands of these 搘ar widows?had to go to work outside their home.

During the next ten years, the situation changed. There were fewer divorces, and people married at a younger age and had more chehildren than the previous generation. It was unusual for a mother to work outside the home during the years when her children were growing up. Families began leaving cities and moving into single-family homes in the suburbs. The traditional family seemed to be returning.

In the years between 1960s and 1990s, there were many important changes in the structure of the family. From the 1960s to the early 1970s, the divorce rate doubled and the birthrate fell by half. The number of single-parent families tripled, and the number of couples living together without being married doubled again. In fact, the single-parent household, once unusual, has replaced the 搕raditional?family as the typical family in the States. If we can judge from history, however, this willle probably change again in the twenty-first century.

carry on 继续;carry out 实施,执行。定语从句we had hoped to see 的宾语为plan, carried out为过去分词形式作plan 的宾补,其和plan之间存在动宾关系,故选C。

  3. 解析:选B。根据“It’s a most difficult one”可知,非常想让对方帮忙,所以用why not?

D。I can’t agree more.

  5. 解析:选A。 即see sb. do sth.和have sth./sb. doing结构。句中用的是see sb. do sth.

根据此句中谓语动词has是单数形式可以确定主语应为单数,即John’s sister,所以用as well as。

  8. 解析:选A。 “醒”和“躺”同时发生,所以用lying作宾语补足语;又因为himself和look after呈被动关系,故用being looked after。

  2. 解析:选A。从第二段中“It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahal, ...”

of the most beautiful buildings in the world”可知,C项正确;由“...to build her the most beautiful tomb that had never been seen”可知,D项正确,所以答案为A。

  3. 解析:选C。由最后一段“The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side ...”

  4. 解析:选D。由第一段“In the year 1630 this beloved wife of the emperor died ...”和“It took 18 years ...to build the Taj Mahal”可推测,君主是1648年以后死的。

  Ⅵ. 1. kinds/types

  2. main

  3. namely

  4. more

  5. periods

  6. lack

  7. birthrate

  8. returning

  9. occurred

  10. temporary

  Ⅵ. One possible version:

  Dear Jane,

Glad to hear from you and you’re welcome to China in July. The followings are some Chinese customs.

Firstly, we greet each other by saying “Hello” or asking such questions as “Where are you going?” or “Are you busy?” to express our care. Secondly, when praised, we reply with “Oh, no!” or “I’m over-praised” to show good manners. Next, when receiving a gift, we usually say “It’s unnecessary” besides “Thanks” to show politeness and then put it away. Finally, at dinner parties, we talk loudly and touch glasses when drinking to someone’s health or success to show that we’re warm.

Anyhow, different cultures, different customs. If you “Do as the Romans do when in Rome”, you’ll enjoy more of your stay here.

I hope what’s mentioned above might be helpful and wish you a good journey.

  Your sincerely,

  Li Hua
