B.Cool阅读理解some children exhibit better self-control. Now a new study has tracked how low self-control can predict poor health, money troubles and even a criminal record in their adult years.,000 children in New Zealand. Researchers followed them for decades. They observed the level of self-control the youngsters displayed. Parents, teachers, even the kids themselves, scored the youngsters on measures like “acting before thinking” and “persistence in reaching goals”.y found that kids with self-control issues tended to grow up to be adults with a far more troubling set of issues to deal with.-control when they were three to ten had the most health problems in their thirties,” Moffitt said, “and they had the worst financial situation. They were more likely to have a criminal record and to be raising a child as a single parent on a very low income.”

Moffitt said it's still unclear why some children have better self-control than others, though other researchers have found that it's mostly a learned behaviour, with relatively little genetic influence. But good self-control can run in families because children with good self-control are more likely to grow up to be healthy and prosperous parents.

“Some of the low self-control study members are more likely to be single parents with a very low income and the parent is in poor health and likely to be a heavy substance abuser,” said Moffitt. “So that's not a good atmosphere for a child. So it looks as though self-control is something that in one generation can influence the next generation.”

But the good news, according to Moffitt, is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school curricula that have been shown to be effective.the purpose of the study is to ________.

However, researchers have discovered that not all humour is equal. The quickest path to success is to use a very specific form of wit: self-deprecation.especially to their girlfriends, but we've found that self-deprecating humour is the most attractive of all,” said anthropologist Gil Greengross.-risk strategy.because it can draw attention to one's real faults, thereby diminishing(缩小) the self-deprecator's status in the eyes of others. But self-deprecating humour can be an especially reliable indicator not only of general intelligence and creativity, but also of moral virtues such as humility.”

Anthropologist Kate Fox, the author of Watching the English, believes self-deprecation is uniquely vital for those with an English cultural background. She said, “For the English, the rules of humour are the cultural equivalent of natural laws—we obey them automatically, rather in the way that we obey the law of gravity.”

“Pomposity(夸耀) and self-importance are outlawed. Serious matters can be spoken of seriously, but one must ously,” she added. they are duly impressed both by one's achievements and by one's reluctance(不愿) to talk about them publicly.”Greengross warns of another danger in the use of self-deprecation. “If you are a low-status individual, using self-deprecating humour can be disastrous to you he said.

“Think about the secondary school teenager whom nobody liked, who made fun of his shortcoming in sports. His classmates laughed at him and he was considered more pathetic(悲惨的) than he was previously. This is high-risk attraction. It is not for everyone.”-maker.y.

Researchers followed them for decades.” 根据第四段中的“They were more likely to have a criminal record…” 根据最后一段中的“But the good news, is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school curricula that have been shown to be effective.” 从全文看,自控力差的孩子长大后有可能犯罪,自控力好的就相反,可知A项是正确的;根据第五段中的“Moffitt said it's still unclear why some children have better self-control than others…” 根据第五段中的“…other researchers have found that it's mostly a learned behaviour, with relatively little genetic influence.” 根据倒数第二段中Gil Greengross所说的“‘If you are a low-status individual, using self-deprecating humour can be disastrous to you,’…” 由第四段中的“It is a risky form of humour…to one's real faults, thereby diminishing(缩小) the self-deprecator's status in the eyes of others.”可知taking the mickey out of oneself意为“戏弄自己”,也就是“自嘲”(self-deprecation)。 A项错在与第一段最后一句不吻合;B项与第四段中“It is a risky form of humour…diminishing(缩小) the self-deprecator's status in the eyes of others.”一句吻合;C项错在与第五段最后一句“…we obey them automatically, rather in the way that we obey the law of gravity.”
