One afternoon,I arrived home late from school. While I was chatting to my grandmother about my busy day,my sister interrupted us wanting to know if we,too, could smell burning.
As my parents were overseas, the thought of a fire terrified us and we quickly checked every room in the house.Nearing the lounge room,I could see a glowing light and hear a roaring sound. To my horror, the mantelpiece was ablaze and smoke was billowing out a window.
I yelled to my sister and grandmother to get out of the house. My sister grabbed the phone to call the fire brigade and, together with the dog,we ran away from the house.
While we anxiously waited for help,a lady and her young daughter ran towards us to check if we were hurt. She had noticed smoke coming from our window and had already alerted the fire brigade. She hugged us and was very relieved to see us safe.
She led us to her car where we waited until the fire brigade had finished dousing the flames. She also helped us answer questions so the police could start their investigations.
Once the lady was convinced that some order had been restored, she apologized for not being able to stay longer,as she had to take her daughter to a dance performance. She promised to return later to check on us.
I was completely lost for words. This kind lady had gone out of her way to make sure we were safe and now she was apologetic about leaving us.We thanked her profusely and urged
her not to delay any further.
Hours later,we were allowed back into the house. It was about midnight when the doorbell rang.To my disbelief,it was the lady from earlier at the door.
As promised, she’d returned to check on us.She was relieved that we all were settled and gave us a warm hug before leaving.
Unfortunately,in all the commotion,I didn’t ask her where she lived so my family hasn’t been able to thank her properly for her thoughtful actions that day.

In this age of the importance placed on human liberties, the idea of forcing someone to do something he does not want to do may receive condemnation. In my opinion, forcing should be resorted to only when all persuasion fails.
Forcing a child to brush his teeth is quite sound. That is if all else fails—educating him about tooth decay, using a carrot and stick approach and even buying him an electric toothbrush. It is very important that he brushes his teeth when he is a child.Children have to be taught what’s good and bad and be trained too.
In choosing a secondary school,a twelveyearold may not have the maturity to weigh the pros and cons involved. If the child does not want to study in the school of his parents’ choice,he may have to be persuaded.Otherwise the issue may be thrashed out and the parents firmly, but gently lay down the rule.Children do not have the experience of life and the foresight to make major decisions that affect their lives. It is important though that parents, should they force,do so carefully and sensitively.Children cannot do without their parents or guardians watching over them.
In school, teachers and principals are given the authority to make the students do what is to be done.A teacher expects submission to his or her commands. In detention classes, students are made to do unpleasant tasks as a punishment.
On the other hand, adults shouldn’t be forced to do things against their wishes. They are autonomous,no longer under their parents’control. They have been through much of life and have been trained by parents and teachers through childhood and adolescence. Now they are independent and know what they want and what they do not want. They should be guided and advised, not forced.
Thus, depending on the circumstances, children can be forced to do things which they prefer not to do.Adults,on the contrary, should not be.
5.The writer thinks that ________.
A.forcing should be condemned
B.forcing is part of education
C.persuasion should replace forcing
D.persuasion should be before forcing
6.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage if a child does not want to brush his teeth?
A.He should be taught the importance of brushing his teeth.
B.He should be told when and how to brush his teeth.
C.He should be rewarded and punished as well.
D.He should be forced to brush his teeth.
7.Which of the following is FALSE according to the passage?
A.Children are too young to choose a suitable school for them to go to.
B.Children should learn to make big decisions that affect their lives.
C.Children’s parents or guardians should watch over them.
D.Teachers and principals should make children do what they should do.
8.The writer concludes that ________.
A.it is wrong to force people to do things against their wishes

Huangyao,a 1,000yearold town in the mountains of southern Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region,is attracting increasing attention from travelers. They come to enjoy its wellpreserved local culture, natural beauty and peaceful life. But daytrippers to Huangyao may be disappointed. It does not take long to cover the 1.1 sq km town. And at first sight,it is very much like other parts of the region such as Yangshuo,in Guilin, already a mustsee destination for international tourists.
Only if visitors stay for a night or two will they discover the charm of this ancient town.It looks even better on rainy days when the surrounding mountains are wrapped in mists.
Luckily enough,we arrived on a rainy day,and stayed for several days.
This landlocked place borders the most remote parts of Guangdong and Hunan provinces.
The most impressive features of the town’s rainsoaked landscape are the banyan trees(菩提树).They are everywhere, their umbrellalike branches reaching into the numerous streets and narrow lanes.
The other attraction is the almost undamaged Ming and Qingstyle architecture giving the town a poetic feel with its small bridges, canals and wooden houses.
A typical mountainous area of karst(石灰岩)formations,Huangyao possesses more than 300 ancient complexes.
Unlike the water towns of East China,Huangyao is surrounded by hills, protecting it from tourist attacks.
Even today, people are up with the sun and retire at sundown, much like their ancestors did. There are no pubs and KTV bars with loud music.
At night, visitors will only hear the sound of rain and wind, and the occasional bark of a dog.
A walk in the morning is an extremely pleasant experience as you weave your way through ageold houses, temples, shops, theaters and archways.Moonshaped bridges cross clear rivers, and the old streets are paved with beautiful blue flagstones(石板),typically associated with 14th century European castles.
All along these flagstone paths we saw the locals, especially women in twos and threes, washing clothes by 3meter deep wells fed by mountain springs, whose water ran into nearby rivers.
Reflecting the wisdom of long ago,the drinking water is kept separate from that meant for washing vegetables, which,in turn,is separate from the water for cleaning farm tools.
“Although every household has access to tap water,we prefer fresh spring water,”says Pan Yuying, who has lived in Huangyao for 50 years.
Mountain spring water has all the minerals the body needs, she says.
She would know—she is 97.

A study now leads support to the idea that mealtime distractions(分散注意)can mask the clues that we really have eaten quite enough. Moreover,it finds, the caloric fallout of not paying attention to what we’re eating doesn’t necessarily end when a meal is over.
Rose Cooper from England, and her colleagues gathered 22 men and an equal number of women for an experiment. Each person dined alone, continuously receiving nine small shares of food items. These ranged from cheese twists and potato chips to carrots, cherry tomatoes and sandwiches or sausage rolls.
Because the goal was to test the potential impacts of distraction on fullness, the researchers randomly assigned half of the participants to eat in front of a computer—and to gain as many wins as possible at the“card”game.Everyone else was told to focus on the sensory qualities of their meal.
According to their instructions, the participants ate all of the food given to them.Yet people who played a computer game during lunch found their meal less filling than the mindful eaters had.Game players also swallow down twice as many cookies, almost an hour later, when they were allowed all the dessert they wanted(in the name of a taste test). The British scientists present their findings in the February American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The real question is why distracted eating should impact snacking. It appears, the scientists say, that memory plays some tricky role in how we register what we eat and the degree to which it satisfies.
Interestingly, eight years ago,Britta Barkeling of Huddinge University in Stockholm and her colleagues reported somewhat related findings.Their 18 overweight subjects had no choice other than to get rid of everything but lunch on one day—because they were blindfolded.Compared to a day when they could view what they were dining on,these people consumed only three quarters as many calories.Yet even hours afterward, they reported being no less full than on the day they had been able to see their plates.
Of course dining in the dark isn’t practical. And sometimes what we eat doesn’t really invite our absolute attention. But there is certainly a growing mountain of data indicating that mindless eating is a waste of resources,a risk to our waistlines—and a costly threat to health.
1.Rose Cooper and her colleagues did the experiment in order to ________.
A.find possible effects of distraction on fullness
B.test the impacts of eating snacks on different people
C.show that all the people enjoy snacks
D.prove that playing computer games is harmful while dining

A.you have consumed more calories
B.you digest what you’ve eaten faster

4.We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A.Britta became famous because of the experiment
B.playing is more important than what we eat

Bobby Qualls was shopping when he received a text message:Fire on Beechmont, onestory house, child trapped inside.“I was picking out gifts for the family our engine house adopted for Christmas,”remembers Qualls, who has been fighting fires in Memphis for 24 years.“I had this sinking feeling as I got in my car and headed over.”
The last time Qualls had been on Beechmont Street was to install smoke detectors(感应器)at the BatemanTubbs home. He’d been on a secret task to see if they needed extra help during the holidays. There he discovered that the four BatemanTubbs children were sleeping on bare mattresses(床垫),and he found two of the boys playing outside in 30degree weather with no shoes or coats.
Qualls learned that Leonard Tubbs was doing his best to make ends meet laying floors while Kimberly Bateman stayed home with the kids.
“When Bobby told me his team wanted to be Secret Santas and buy my kids toys,at first I thought we didn’t need any help.” Bateman recalls.“It really touched me.I told him what the kids really needed was warm clothes.”
That’s exactly what Qualls was shopping for on December 9,2010:winter jackets for Christopher, seven;JoJo,four;Madison, one;and twomonthold Charles. While driving over to Beechmont Street,he dialed Bateman’s cellphone. She answered on the first ring, screaming,“The house is on fire—JoJo’s trapped inside!”
By the time Qualls reached the house, the family had gotten out,but their home was severely damaged. His coworkers had found JoJo hiding under a pile of clothes in a back bedroom. He had stopped breathing and had been given CPR and rushed to the hospital.Qualls learned that JoJo was now on life support and might not make it through the night. He rushed to the hospital with Lt.Mark Eskew, who placed a stuffed teddy bear in a firefighter’s suit on JoJo’s bed.
“I just kept praying my little boy would open his eyes,”Bateman recalls.“There was nothing else I could do.They were pumping black and thick liquid out of his lungs and stomach for days.”
After a few days, though,JoJo regained consciousness, and the tubes were taken out of his throat. While he began to slowly recover, the local newspaper and TV stations got hold of the story, and the Secret Santa Plan of Qualls and his fellow firefighters snowballed. Before long, the fire station was overflowing with boxes of toys, food, towels, and clothes.People called, wanting to donate furniture and appliances(电器)too.By December 23,Bateman and Tubbs had moved their kids into a new rental home.By Christmas Eve,JoJo was ready to leave the hospital, and the firefighters were ready to deliver the family their very own Christmas miracle.
“These guys aren’t just firefighters,”says Bateman,“they’re our guardian angels. If they hadn’t installed a smoke detector that first day they came to our house,we wouldn’t have known when the fire started. Then they went the extra ten miles to give us a Christmas.”

I like finding ways to improve my life and bring more positivity into it.Although I’m just at the beginning of that journey I’ve already found some useful ideas for doing just that.Maybe they can help you to have more fun, improve your relationships, your business, your health and your life.I hope so.
Appreciating as much as you can is one of those very simple things you can do to bring more positivity into your life.I have also found appreciation to be a great way to turn an angry, sad and frustrated mood around to a more positive one.Simply appreciate anywhere and everywhere in your day:appreciate the great weather, and appreciate the goodlooking guy that just walked past you.Appreciate the things you have and the things you experience.Doing this for a minute or two always gives me positive encouragement and improves my outlook on the world.
If you don’t stop comparing yourself to others, then you’ll just create a lot of unnecessary pain in your life.If you pass one person then you’ll just find another person more successful than you.And your brief sense of being a winner will transform once again into anxiety, fear, stomach aches and possibly heartattacks.Instead, start comparing yourself to yourself.Try to improve yourself and see how you grow and become a more successful and happier person.Focus on yourself, not the other people around you,no matter if they are more or less successful. It may sound updated, but I feel it’s both a healthier and more successful way to work for our view life.
Your emotions work backwards too.So even if you don’t feel positive, confident, calm or decisive you can act like it.And after you have done that for a few minutes, guess what happens? You will actually start to feel positive, confident, calm or decisive. If you don’t know how to act, observe other people around you—it may be friends, coworkers, family or celebrities from any time and age—who have the quality you’d like to have. Then imitate them.If you don’t believe in this, then just smile even if you have to force yourself—for 30 seconds right now and see how you feel after that.
Michael Jordan once said:“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career.I’ve lost almost 300 games.26 times,I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot but missed.I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”Society may have brought you up to fear failure. But if you can rethink failure not as something to fear but rather useful feedback it can improve your life largely.A failure may hurt for a while but then you can learn one or many lessons from it.And then you try again. And again, and failure
becomes less and less frightening. All successful people have failed many, many times. But they know that there are still a lot of great new people and opportunities out there. So they try again. And sooner or later they have success once again.
Useful ways to live a more positive life

A popular saying goes,“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true.Words have the power to build us up or tear us down.It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves—the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “selftalk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down.Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of selftalk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give_ourselves_a_pat_on_the_back.The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner.Or harsh(刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build selfesteem(自尊) and motivate others to do their best.Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.
A.words have a lasting effect on us
B.inspiring words give us confidence
C.negative words may let us down
D.not sticks and stones but words will hurt us
2.There is no sense for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because ________.
A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
B.talking to ourselves always gives us courage
C.we can benefit from talking to ourselves
D.it does no harm to have “selftalk” when we are alone
3.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely ________.
A.remind ourselves
B.praise ourselves
C.make ourselves relaxed
D.give ourselves amusement
4.The author would probably hold the view that ________.
A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B.negative words may motivate us to make more progress
C.people tend to remember friendly words
D.it is better to think twice before talking to others

No budget for your vacation? Try home exchangesswapping houses with strangers.Agree to use each other’s cars, and you can save dollars on car rentals(租赁费), too.
Home exchanges are not new.At least one group, Intervac, has been making such an arrangement possible and easier since 1953.But trading online is gaining popularity these days, with several sites in operation, including HomeExchanges.Founded in 1992, with some 28,000 listings, this company bills itself as the world’s largest home exchange club, reporting that membership has increased 30% this year.
The annual fee is usually less than US $100.Members can access thousands of listings for apartments, villas, suburban homes and farms around the world.Initial contact is made via email, with subsequent communication usually by phone. Before a match is made, potential swappers tend to discuss a lot.
However, the concept may sound risky to some people. What about theft? Damage? These are reasonable causes for concern, but equally unlikely. As one swapper puts it,“Nobody is going to fly across the ocean or drive 600 miles to come to steal your TV.Besides, at the same time they’re staying in your home, you are staying in their home.”
Exchange sites recommend that swappers discuss such matters ahead of time. They may fill out an agreement spelling out who shoulders which responsibilities if a problem arises. It does not matter if the agreement would hold up in court, but it does give the exchangers a little satisfaction.
Generally, the biggest complaint among home exchangers has to do with different standards of cleanliness.Swappers are supposed to make sure their home is in order before they depart, but one person’s idea of “clean” may be more forgiving than another’s.Some owners say if they come back to a lessthansparkling kitchen, it may be inconvenient but would not sour them on future exchanges.
5.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.How to exchange homes.
B.How home exchange is becoming popular.
C.The biggest home exchange agency Intervac.
D.A contrast between Intervac and HomeExchanges.
6.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “bills” in the Second paragraph?
A.Advertises.

7.How do home exchangers normally begin their communication?
A.By phone.
B.By email.
C.Via a matchmaker.

Parents can help their seventh and eighth grade students stand out in and out of their English classroom by introducing them to newspapers.Newspapers not only offer information on current events, but they can also be used to test your child’s knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and more.
Who,What,Where,When,Why,and How
Have your child read the first couple of paragraphs of a news story.Ask them to write down all of the important facts, such as who, what, where, when, why and how. This helps parents to see if their children comprehend the basic facts and information they read.
Grammar
Parents can monitor a child’s understanding of grammatical parts of speech (词性) without a grammar textbook.Ask your child to read a paragraph in an article and then list a specific number of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and the like, which serves more of a test of their grammatical knowledge.Encourage them to list each of these parts of speech in a paragraph. Then, reread the paragraph to see if they missed anything.
Persuasion
Ask your child to select an advertisement from the newspaper.Have them investigate how specific words or phrases influence their feelings about a particular product. Then, encourage them to create an advertisement of their own for an item they do not like.Tell them not to show their true feelings and try to make people want to buy this unwanted item. After that, ask them to list the persuasive techniques used in their ad.
Facts vs Opinions
Select an editorial for your middle schooler to read.Have your child divide a piece of paper into two columns, one marked fact, and the other marked opinion.Have your student decide which column it fits under. This will help your child better understand facts versus opinions.Another related exercise is responding to an editorial.Encourage your child to write letters to the editor or responses to editorials or other articles. Before your child sends his or her letter, check the opinion section to see what requirements there are.
Headlines and Synonyms(同义词)
Ask your middle schooler to rewrite a couple of headlines using the synonyms of the original words.Compare the headlines.Do the original versions or the rewrites sound better? This is a great exercise to help students learn synonyms and expand their vocabulary.
If you find your seventh or eighth grade child is struggling with these newspaper activities,it may be an indicator that they have fallen behind in their reading skills. These activities are designed with a seventh or eighth grader in mind;therefore, while they are educational, they should be more of reinforcement instead of a major reading challenge.

One night, I was partying in central London, near Piccadilly Circus.Running short of money, I set off to find the nearest ATM to withdraw some cash.At Shaftesbury Avenue, I saw a huge queue for one ATM machine, but no one was using the neighboring “hole_in_the_wall”.Assuming that the second machine was broken, I asked one queuing man if it was out of order. He replied, “It’s working, but this one pays out twenties for tenners!”
So the reason for the weirdly long queue is that these folks wanted to “double their money” by getting £ 20 notes for each £10 note requested.Being an honest man, I didn’t hang about; I simply used the idle machine and walked off.
Last week, customers took similar advantage of Commonwealth Bank in Sydney,Australia.Following overnight maintenance, a computer virus caused CommBank’s ATMs to fail to function properly and begin paying out extra money, with unrestricted withdrawals. They allowed customers with little or no cash in their accounts to withdraw large sums that they didn’t have. After about 5 1/2 hours, CommBank managed to restart these ATMs and stop the flood of cash.
You stole your own cash!
By withdrawing money they didn’t have in their accounts,
some of these greedy customers have gone heavily overdrawn.News reports indicate that some people were withdrawing as much as AU $2,500 (£ 1,563) in single dealing.
Alas, both CommBank and the New South Wales police said that they will use ATM records and cameras to track down those who took advantage of the error. As Detectives Superintendent Col Dyson of the New South Wales police department warned, “People should realise that they don’t have the right to take that money and are committing a criminal offence if they keep it.”
What about overpayments?
What about when you key in a £20 withdrawal and you get two £20 notes, not two £10 notes?
In English law(covering England and Wales), you have the right to keep money paid to you in error “under mistake of fact”, but only if you honestly believe that the money is yours.
However, if you requested £20, got £40 and £40 was allowed to be lent to you, then the cash is yours to keep, as neither you nor the bank has suffered any loss.

D.people queued up to withdraw money because the other ATMs were broken
3.According to the passage,________.

B.some people have been arrested on charge of getting extra money in the two happenings
C.last week, an ATM in Sydney, Australia paid out AU $10 for every request for AU $20
D.an ATM in Sydney, Australia was paying out more money than asked for because the bank owner had lifted the restriction
4.From the part subtitled“What about overpayments?”, we can know ________.
A.if people kept the extra money they got at a bank they might pretend they did not know it
B.people committed a crime by getting the extra money even if they had that much in their account

TOKYO—Lonely astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS)
may soon be getting a robot friend from Japan.
Japan’s space agency is considering putting a talking humanoid (有人的特点的) robot on the ISS to watch the work while astronauts are asleep, monitor their health and stress levels and communicate to Earth through the microblogging site Twitter.
Japan’s space agency JAXA announced this week that it is looking at a plan to send a humanoid robot to the space station in 2016 that could communicate with the ground through Twitter—primarily feeding photos, rather than original ideas—and provide astronauts with “comfort and companionship”.
Following up on US NASA’s “Robonaut” R2 program, which is set for launch on the Discovery shuttle next week, the Japanese robot would be part of a larger effort to create and refine robots that can be used by the elderly, JAXA said in a statement.
Japan is one of the leading countries in robotics and has a rapidly aging society with one of the world’s longest life expectancies.
Improving robot communication capabilities could help elderly people on Earth by providing a nonintrusive(无干扰的) means of monitoring the robot owner’s health and vital signs and sending information to emergency responders if there is an abnormality, JAXA said.
“We are thinking in terms of a very humanlike robot that would have facial expressions and be able to talk with the astronauts,” said JAXA’s Satoshi Sano.
The robot was being developed with the advertising and communications giant Dentsu Inc.and a team at Tokyo University.
The NASA project has a humanlike head, hands and arms and uses the same tools as station crew members. The “Robonaut” called R2 is intended to carry out maintenance tasks in the station’s Destiny lab.
NASA says it hopes that humanoid robots could one day stand in for astronauts during spacewalks or perform tasks too difficult or dangerous for humans.
For now, the $ 2.5 million NASA robot is limited to activities within the lab.
5.According to the passage, a humanoid robot, put on the ISS, shall carry out the tasks EXCEPT ________.
A.keep in contact with Earth
B.get a friend for astronauts from Japan
C.take care of the ISS sometimes
D.keep an eye on the health of the astronauts
6.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage?
A.NASA is planning to communicate with the space station through Twitter.
B.Japan has the largest number of elderly people.
C.The robot program will eventually benefit the elderly.
D.R2 program is in the charge of Japan’s JAXA.
7.From the passage we can know ________.
A.robots could completely take the place of human astronauts in the future
B.the robot program, having cost $ 2.5 million, can carry out all tasks
C.many Japanese universities joined in the robot program
D.future astronauts will become less lonely and more comfortable with the help of the robot

From the health point of view we are living in a wonderful age.The expectation of life has increased largely. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable slaughter (屠杀) of men, women and children on the roads.Man is versus the motor car! It is a neverending battle which man is losing.Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.
It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel(方向盘),his car becomes the additional part of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor car often brings out a man’s worst qualities.People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering wheel. They become rude and selfish. All their hidden anger, disappointments and envies seem to be exposed by the act of driving.
The surprising thing is that society only smiles so kindly on the motorist when seeing his behaviors talked about above.Everything is done for his convenience.Cities are allowed to become almost unsuitable to live because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is damaged by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten.
It is high time a world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life.In regard to driving, the laws of some countries are dishonorably loose and even the strictest are not strict enough.A code which was universally accepted could only have a dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through inflexible annual tests for safety.Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can destroy a person’s driving
ability, so present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. The highest and lowest speed limits should be put on all roads, as has been done in the USA.All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may sound unacceptably harsh. But surely nothing should be considered to be too severe if it results in reducing the annual loss of human life. After all,the world is for human beings, not for motor cars.

A British judo master has been given a big award for making an “outstanding contribution” to his home city.
George Kerr, 73, was praised as a “good and beautiful person” as he picked up the Edinburgh Award, which honors people who have made a positive impact on the Scottish capital. He is the fourth person to receive the honor, following in the footsteps of Ian Rankin,JK Rowling and Sir Chris Hoy,all of whom were recognized for helping to bring international recognition to the city.
The Edinburghborn sporting star, called “Mr.Judo”, said, “It’s a fantastic honor to get this. They give it to people who put Edinburgh on the map. It’s a great thing to be honored by your own people. It’s fantastic when you consider I was a little boy from Craigentinny whose father was a bus driver.”
The event saw the unveiling (揭幕) of Kert’s handprints in the City Chambers yard, where they have been carved in Caithness stone alongside those of the previous Edinburgh Award winners.Council leader Jenny Dawe spoke well of Kerr, saying he was a“hugely deserving” member of the outstanding Edinburgh Award “club”.“The council is delighted to present George Kerr with the Edinburgh Award on behalf of the people of Edinburgh,”she added.
Life-long friend and Scottish Hairdresser of the Year Charlie Miller also spoke of a “great, good and beautiful person who inspired a lot of people and is well worth respecting worldwide”. The award follows what the British Judo Association (BJA) president described as an “unbelievable” year.Kerr was elevated to the highest rank of his sport in February 2010 when he became the youngest person ever to be named a 10th Dan, a title which has only been held by 15 people since it first began in the late 19th century.
A big congratulation to George! He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire(CBE) in the 2011 New Year Honors, coming soon after being awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan.

Smartphones that react to your moods and televisions that can tell it’s you who’s watching are in your future as Intel Corporation’s top technology expert sets his sights on contextaware computing.
Chief technology officer Justin Rattner showed how personal devices will one day offer advice.“How can we change the relationship so we think of these devices not as devices but as assistants or even companions?” he asked.
Handheld devices could combine already common geographic location technology with data from microphones, cameras, heart and body monitors and even brain scans to offer their owners advice that today only a friend or relative could give.
“Imagine a device that uses a variety of sensors to determine what you are doing at an instant, from being asleep in your bed to being out for a run with a friend,” Rattner said.“Future devices will constantly learn about who you are, how you live, work and play.”
Rattner also demonstrated a television remote control that figures out who is holding it based on how it is held, and then learns the viewer’s entertainment preferences.
As the world leader for decades in microchips for servers and desktop computers, Intel is hurrying to catch up in the profitable market for smartphones like Apple’s iPhone and Research in Motion’s Blackberry.
Telephones with email, global positioning and media players are pointing the way to a future where ever more functions are packed into ever smaller mobile devices.
The smartphone industry, including technology giants like LG and Samsung, is likely to sell 270 million phones this year and grow 25 percent in 2011, according to market research company IDC.
“I think you can expect to see features that support contextaware computing starting to appear in Intel products in the near future.” Rattner said.
But analysts say Intel faces an uphill battle getting its microchips into new phones as Nvidia, Marvell and Qualcomm have already made headway with cheap,
lower-power processors based on designs by ARM Holdings.
Rattner recognized that questions about privacy and people’s willingness to be intimate with their computers will have to be settled before the future generation of smartphones he described takes off.
“If you think identity threat is a problem today, imagine when your whole context is readily available on the Net,” he said.
5.The future smartphones can do all of the following EXCEPT________.
A.offering advice to their owners’ friends or relatives

Mobile Health
Mobile phone technology is quickly changing the way the world operates.Today,we tell about two new projects involving mobile health, also known as mhealth.
Doctors and technology experts in London are developing a new way to test for sexual infections(性传染病).The new device uses mobile phones and computers to help people find out if they have been infected with a sexual disease.People will be able to perform the test in the privacy of their own homes.
People place urine(尿) or saliva(唾液)on a small piece of test paper. They place the test paper in a small device that contains a computer chip. Then they place the device in their mobile phone for testing.
Within minutes, they receive information telling them if they have a sexual disease. And they receive advice on what to do next.
Claudia Estcourt is with Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. She is also part of the research team working on the project.
CLAUDIA ESTCOURT:“This isn’t designed to replace traditional clinics. This is really opening testing up to people who might find it embarrassing or difficult to get into their clinic. And this might be a much quicker, easier choice for them—that they can be sure to get very accurate results.”
Health experts say many young people are too ashamed to visit a clinic to be tested. This increases the risk of them passing on sexual diseases. The researchers hope the tests will help persuade people to be tested and reduce the number of sexually transmitted infections.
Dr.Estcourt says the project is still seven to ten years away from completion. But she says it holds great promise for the future.
CLAUDIA ESTCOURT:“Clearly, this new technology can be used in developing countries: maybe for testing HIV,maybe for testing tuberculosis(肺结核),or perhaps even malaria(疟疾).”
Researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada are studying a mobile phone system that may help people with diabetes control their blood pressure.
The system collects blood pressure readings from home testing devices that have wireless technology. The readings are then sent to a health-care monitoring system.
Patients receive a mobile phone message telling them how they are doing. If their blood pressure is too high, they are advised to make an appointment with their doctor.Several high readings will cause the system to automatically contact the doctor.
Patients in the study used the mobile phone system for one year. The researchers found that thirtyseven percent of the patients were able to get their blood pressure under control. This compares with about fourteen percent of patients using common equipment.

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man.College, career, and life itself got in the way.In fact,Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There,in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son.He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr.Belser died last night. The funeral is on Wednesday.”Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
“Jack,did you hear me?”
“Oh, sorry, Mom.Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him.I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago.” Jack said.
“Well,he didn’t forget you.Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce(回忆) about the many days you spent over‘his side of the fence’ as he put it,”Mom told him.
“I loved that old house he lived in, ”Jack said.
“You know,Jack, after your father died, Mr.Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life,” she said.
“He’s the one who taught me carpentry, I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him.He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important...Mom,I’ll be there for the funeral.” Jack said.
Busy as he was, he kept his word.Jack caught the next flight to his hometown.Mr.Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered.Every step held memories.Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack stopped suddenly.
“What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked.
“The box is gone,”he said.
“What box?”Mom asked.
“There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk.I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’ ”,Jack said.
It was gone.Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box.He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
“Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him.”Jack said sadly.
Returning to his office the next day,he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention.
“Mr.Harold Belser” it read.
Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope.Jack’s hands shook as he read the note inside.
“Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It’s the thing I valued most in my life.”A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.Running his fingers slowly over the fine cover, he opened it.
Inside he found these words carved:“ Jack, thanks for your time! Harold Belser.”
“Oh, My God! This is the thing he valued most...”
Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his assistant and cleared his appointments for the next two days.“Why?” his assistant asked.
“I need some time to spend with my son.” he said.

“Four Tigers” Ceremony of the Tu Minority
Heigouding Village,Ledu County in the west of Qinghai province is a place where many people of the Tu minority have lived for centuries. As the little village is comparatively closed to the outside world,a custom called“Four Tigers”was created 200 years ago to protect its inhabitants(栖息地)from sickness and bad luck.
Every year the ceremony is held on the eve of January 15th according to the Chinese lunar calendar to frighten off ghosts and evil souls, and to pray for peace.
Normally four local villagers are selected to be the“tigers”in the ceremony. At first, they gathered with village elders at the mountain-god temple to offer sacrifices of wine, food and incense, and to ask the god to help the tigers. Then the tigers were adorned with herbs, candles and two batches of incense to serve as the tiger’s ears. Two red ribbons held in their mouths represented the tiger’s tongue. The“Tigers”drank wine, knelt and kowtowed to the mountain-god before they received Hada,a kind of white silk scarf representing respects and good luck, from the village head with firecrackers crackling.
As night fell, the candles on the tigers’ bodies were lit and the tigers began their visits to one household after another.Villagers followed, shouting “Tigers are coming!”The elder from each household welcomed the tigers at the gate, while the rest of the family knelt down in the courtyard.Firecrackers were set off,a toast made and candies, meat and wine were presented to the villagers following the tigers. After twirling(快速转动) in three circles in the courtyard while those present kowtowed and prayed, the tigers went through every corner of every room to drive away any hiding ghosts. If there was a sick person in the house, the tigers jumped around him or her, scratched their body and said lucky words to drive away diseases and ghosts. After the ceremony, the family would present wine and food to the tigers. Then, shouting“The tigers are leaving!”,the whole family saw them off.
After visiting all 30 or 40 households, the herbs were removed from the tigers and burned,to indicate that all the ghosts had been conquered. Then the villagers knelt and kowtowed with the sound of firecrackers, marking the end of the ceremony.
The tiger image exists in other minority groups, also. In ancient times, people entrusted their happiness to gods. The “four tigers” ceremony is vividly held in memory of ancient times and a living fossil for academics studying the lives of ancient people. As it is not popular nowadays, this cultural heritage is on the edge of extinction and needs to be rescued.

The United States has always been a country of many cultures. Before Europeans came to North America, many groups of Native Americans lived here.Different Native American groups had different cultures. The first Europeans in the United States were from England and Holland, but immigrants came from all European countries. Many people also immigrated from Asia and Africa.Sadly, many Africans were brought to the United States as slaves. Many immigrants came from Latin America too.Today, the United States has people from more cultures than ever.
In the 19th century, people spoke of the United States as a“melting pot.” People thought that all immigrants should forget their native cultures and languages and become Englishspeaking Americans. They felt that people should assimilate into American culture. However, not everyone wanted to assimilate completely. Many people tried to keep parts of their cultures, such as foods, customs, and languages. However, their children often forgot their parents’or grandparents’language. But most Americans, even those whose families have been here for a long time, can tell the countries their relatives came from. And of course, new immigrants take great pride in their culture and language.
For all of these reasons, melting pot is no longer a good way to describe the United States.Instead, people now call the United States a“salad bowl.”They say salad bowl because in a salad, you can still see all of the individual parts(lettuce, tomato, and so on),but all the different parts mix together and begin to take on the flavor of one another.

Expecting good things can make you healthier and might even lengthen your life, says researcher Suzanne Segerstrom,PhD,author of Breaking Murphy’s Law.Segerstrom is coauthor of a recent review of studies on the benefits of a positive attitude—and has experienced them herself. We asked her about optimism’s principles and payoffs.
1)Feeling well helps when you’re not well.
“When researchers look at people who have similar medical conditions, they can predict who’s likely to live longer:the one who feels his health is better. There’s something about that feeling of wellness that’s important,even-maybe especially-if you’re ill.Optimism also seems to help buffer(减缓)you against stress.I’ve been studying firstyear law students for 16 years. That’s a very stressed group, but in my most recent study, each time a student’s optimism increased one point on a fivepoint scale, his immune(免疫性的)response to an injected virus or yeast improved by 20 percent.”
2)Optimism is something you do.
“Anxiety and other negative emotions are known to be detrimental to the body, especially to your cardiovascular and immune systems(心血管和免疫系统),and having an optimistic nature seems to protect against those effects.
In addition, research shows that people who are optimistic about their future behave differently. They exercise more, are less likely to smoke, and follow a better diet. And if they get sick, they’re more likely to actively participate in their treatment.I’ve seen that myself-I have back pain from arthritis, but I think my willingness to do whatever it takes has helped a lot.”
3)Not happy?Don’t worry.
“Happiness is a feeling;optimism is a belief that aspects of your future will turn out well.Happiness can fluctuate(波动)a lot,but an optimistic disposition(性格)is usually pretty stable. If you’re not optimistic, you can try creating a‘positive events’log.Good things happen to everyone, but pessimists often don’t take notice;spending a few minutes every day writing about at least three positive things may help you expect them more often.Or instead of trying to be optimistic,do what optimists do:Work hard to reach your goals. Each accomplishment should make it easier to be hopeful about the next one.”
5.The main finding of the study done by Suzanne Segerstrom is ________.
A.people who are optimistic about their future behave differently
B.happiness usually results in a bright future
C.people will benefit from their positive attitudes towards life
D.anyone who feels his health is better lives longer
6.What conclusion did Suzanne Segerstrom draw from her studies on her firstyear law students?
A.The more optimistic they are,the less likely they will get ill.
B.The better they feel, the more rapidly they will recover from illness.
C.The better medical care they enjoy, the longer they will live.
D.The younger they are,the stronger they will be.
7.We learn from the passage that optimistic people ________.
A.take an active part in all aspects
B.tend to have a better lifestyle

D.are willing to do whatever they are asked

A magic trick in which an illusionist commanded six goldfish to swim synchronized patterns in a shallow pool won much applause at CCTV’s annual Spring Festival Gala a few weeks back.
The performance made magician Fu Yandong an overnight star.Yet,it also attracted the attention of several animal rights activists, who immediately suspected the showman of mistreating the creatures involved in his act.
I actually watched the gala on the night and didn’t at any point get the feeling that these lovely fish were being tortured. On the contrary,I thought it was a wonderful show, one full of surprises.I’d bet the majority of the studio audience felt the same way, otherwise why else would they have given it such a response at the end?
When I heard days later about how angry the animal rights groups are, I felt they were just making an unnecessary fuss. How can they be so sure Fu has abused these goldfish? It’s not like they can feel indirectly for the fish. Apparently, the campaigners are not so sure either, given the lack of evidence, and have been trying to force the magician to prove his innocence by revealing the secret behind the trick.Fu has so far stood firm, however, and in the end the protestors ganged up and successfully pressured CCTV executives to cancel his scheduled appearance on the Lantern Festival on Feb 17.
Reading up on the story online, I discovered that what lit the fuse(导火索) was some mean imitators who posted their sick experiments with goldfish online.Of course, all of their attempts fell like a lead balloon.
OK, this somewhat justifies the concerns of animal protection groups.I can understand that they fear that the trick might encourage thoughtless behavior that results in the abuse of fish. But that still doesn’t justify the way they dealt with the issue.
They played hardball, yet was it really wise to demand the Lantern Festival show be cancelled? If the fish are not harmed during the act, as the magician has repeatedly stated on his blog and in the press, is it fair to cut the show just over the fear of inspiring copycats? After all, cases of people experimenting with fish have been few and far between.
Canceling things to avoid such problems is simply papering over the cracks.Should they also ban animal shows at circuses, where no doubt tougher and more inhumane taming techniques are used?
For those who conduct cruel behavior and post it online, is keeping them from watching the show going to correct their disregard toward animals? Even if they miss the goldfish trick, who knows what other animals may die in their hands next time they get “inspired” by another innocent show.
I’ve seen magicians cut people in half, but I never heard of people rushing to do similar experiments or calls from human rights organizations to cancel the shows because of human abuse.
It’s not the show that’s at fault but the general lack of awareness over animal rights. My suggestion would be to use the show’s huge success to popularize the concept of animal protection.Activists can ask the magician to call his audience during the show not to hurt animals, not just goldfish.
I believe that once people see these cute performances and then see the horrible aftermath of animal abuse, they will get the idea pretty quickly. It would be the ultimate approach to raising awareness of animal protection.

One way to sell stuff is to make things that people want to buy.Another way is to offer “free trials” and then hit customers with bills. This brings us to PDC Education Ltd, run by Rebecca Jordan and Kirsty Weir of Leeds, whose website teachingresourcesuk.com. offers teaching plans for teachers.
Rosemarie Brady, finance manager of Rutlish School in Merton, southwest London, tells us that one teacher called Amanda Seyfried downloaded the “free”
resources.“Unfortunately in very small print, they state that unless the free trial is cancelled, then you will be charged,” she says.
A year has gone by and now they’ve been sent a second bill for £500, just because they forgot to cancel the “free trial”.
Merton Council-and it’s not the only one-has sent a warning to all its schools saying,“Only in the very (easily missed) small print of the terms and conditions is it explained that, after the 14day trial, schools will be automatically signed for a twoyear contract with the company.”
“This will only be stopped if the teacher who requested the trial writes directly to PDC to cancel before the 14 days have expired (期满).The fee can be as much as hundreds of pounds, with the threat of debt recovery if they are not paid.”
Among the online complaints is this one from a teacher, “How disappointed I am that they will not even consider seriously renegotiating the invoice(清单).”
Rebecca Jordan of PDC Education said,“The whole purpose behind the free trial is that we have confidence in our business. This free trial period gives teachers the chance to see what is an offer without having to commit to a payment.”
Only a “very small number” of teachers have complained when they receive an invoice, she added.“Their only complaint is that they have not checked what they are signing up to but that is not our fault, the position is totally clear. The prices and the trial terms are clear to see on the online sign up page.”
It’s true the terms and conditions are on their website. But perhaps it’s unhelpful that they run to almost 3,000 words.

Men are disappearing from elementary schools. Two trends are converging (会聚) to lower their representation in classrooms: more women are stepping up to become principals, and fewer men are becoming teachers. In Arizona, almost 60 percent of school principals and nearly 90 percent of teachers are women.Six years ago, the majority of principals were men. Some schools have no men, meaning kids may not have a male teacher or principal until middle or high school. It’s the same picture nationally.Female educators say they are happy that women are finally leading the schools, where they have dominated in the teacher ranks for decades. But they are worried about the fact that there are no men teaching kids to read, to discover the power of gravity or to multiply threedigit numbers.
Children, especially boys, need to view learning as a manly pursuit to reinforce the value of education, educators say. That in turn can promote teaching as a career for boys and benefit all kids by infusing(灌输……于) schools with male role models.
Margaret Serna, principal of Scottsdale’s Tavan Elementary School, cheers the climb by women into school administration. “I see it the advance of women. We’re the CEO,” Serna said.“Women are finally catching up.”But she’s eager to hire a qualified man for her school to add balance to the staff and show children that education is important to both men and women. But where are the men? According to a survey recently conducted by a job organization, two main factors may be driving men out of schools.
The nurturing(养育、教育) factor
Principal Debbie Hudson has 28 teachers in her Phoenix Isaac Elementary District Primary School, and all of them are women.Hudson would love to have a man on the Lela Alston School campus to play football with the boys and show them that they can grow up to be a teacher. But she’s not sure whether men will wipe noses, give out hugs or deal with the anxiety these children feel when separated from their mothers.
The pay factor
“Pay is horrible.Pay is a huge factor,” said Bob Rose, who has taught for 35 years, first in Chicago and then in the Phoenix Elementary District, making $53,000 a year teaching in an innercity school, where support and supplies are scarce and kids are tougher to teach to grade level skills.
With what he knows now about pay and workload, he said he would never encourage a man to get into the field. As a teacher in elementary school ,you can’t be the breadwinner.
Hopefully, in the future more realistic pay and benefits will attract a new generation of men not afraid to wipe a nose and hug a child and influence the lives of kids. They won’t mind being asked to clear out the boys’ bathroom or chase a dog off campus.
1.____________ Men are disappearing from elementary schools.
Comparisons 1) In Arizona, six years ago, the 2.____________ of principals were men.
2) Almost 60 percent of school principals and nearly 90 percent of teachers are women and it is the same with the whole 3.____________.
Results 1)Women teachers in primary school are worried about the 4.____________ of men teaching kids to read, to discover the power of gravity or to 5.____________ threedigit numbers.
2) Children, especially boys seldom have male instructors as examples to 6.____________ and have less chance to learn from them.
7.____________ -A survey conducted by an organization summarized that:
1)Male teachers are not always willing to do 8.____________ things like wiping noses, giving out hugs or dealing with the anxiety the children feel when separated from their mothers.
2)Terrible pay and workload cause many people to give up teaching as primary school teacher.

Leaving one’s motherland and trying to fit in a new culture when being abroad can cause confusion and anxiety.Culture shock is the name given to the state of confusion that results from exposure to an unfamiliar culture. The term“culture shock” is a name that is not accurate,as it implies a single sudden, unpleasant event. In fact,as a freelance journalist Deborah Dundas pointed out, culture shock is more like a constant attack of minishocks. Speaking of her seven years in Belfast,Dundas said,“It wasn’t the big things that caused culture shock—it was the details of everyday living.”
One of her first minishocks involved typically a daily routine:recycling. She was surprised—and somewhat unnerved—to find that the system of community recycling she had used in her native Toronto didn’t exist in Belfast.
“Every time I used a tin in Belfast,I would carefully take off the label and then would have no idea what to do with it,”she said.“It took me ages not to feel guilty about just throwing it in the garbage. But even then,I was still taking off the labels, because I couldn’t help myself.”
The lack of familiar cultural patterns caused Dundas to make many mistakes as she attempted to adjust to the social rules of her new environment. She questioned her own identity as she struggled to fit in.Then she passed through different cultural shock stages, and used several methods to overcome culture shock.
Once she was able to adapt her behavior to her cultural surroundings,Dundas began to feel comfortable in Belfast. She was finally able to relax and enjoy her life abroad.

As in China, young people in the UK who are not academic often find a manual job (working with your hands).
There are different categories of manual worker:unskilled, such as a laborer;semiskilled, for example, working on a production line in a car factory;and skilled, such as a plumber, tiler, electrician, carpenter, chef or baker.
Nonskilled manual work is still regarded as something you do if you have no gift for anything else. But many of the other traders require lengthy training and study at a college of further education.
There, students learn practical skills under the supervision of master craftsmen. You can’t walk onto a building site in Britain to find work without having completed safety courses at the very least.
In fact,it’s better if you have a Higher National Certificate or a twoyear diploma in construction. And after that there’s always the possibility of going to university to study for a degree in construction engineering.
Bankers in London have been known to give up their careers in the city to retrain as plumbers.A good plumber can charge 40 pounds(400 yuan) an hour or more, while an IT technician makes around 9.50 pounds per hour.
The popularity of manual work has also been boosted by a changed perception of the skilled traders.
Perhaps whitecollar workers in banks, insurance companies, dotcom firms and local government have realized that in times of recession,no job is safe.
Thousands of people are being laid off from what they thought were “jobs for life”.It has dawned on many whitecollar workers that skilled tradesmen are always in demand.
Then there’s the celebrity chef factor:working as a chef now seems a glamorous and rewarding career to many young people in the UK.
This may be called the “Jamie Oliver effect”.
Jamie Oliver,27,began work at a café in London at 16 years of age.Three years later,he gained fame for producing TV cookery programs. Now he is a multimillionaire chef and social campaigner.
When Oliver was invited to 10 Downing Street to prepare a lunch for prime ministers,he proved to people that manual work like cooking is in demand, even from the British government.

China will start a national crackdown(打击)on unqualified medical cosmetology organizations following a young girl’s death during cosmetic surgery, health authorities said on Friday.
On Nov.15,24yearold Wang Bei,a former talent show contestant, died during facial bone grinding surgery in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, raising public concern over the safety of China’s medical cosmetology industry(美容业).
That Wang even felt she needed to improve her looks has underlined the extent to which cosmetic surgery has taken hold. Her beauty had already made her a popular contestant on the smash(极为成功的)television hit Super Girl.
Deng Haihua, spokesman of the Ministry of Health, said at a press conference on Friday that China’s medical cosmetology industry suffers many problems ranging from frequent medical accidents and unfair competition to the lack of proper supervision and qualified service.
Ma Xiaowei,ViceMinister of Health, said although China has elaborated the requirements on the staff and medical plastic organizations, there are still some medical organizations operating without certification, the Information Times reported on Tuesday.
Ma said a recent inspection of 11 plastic surgery organizations in some big cities found that fewer than half of them met national standards.
“It is not possible to be famous based only on your face,”Zhang Qian,a model in Shanghai said.“I am on a diet to lose weight and have surgery to have more charms so that I can be recognized in the entertainment world.”
Heavy pressure to get a glamorous job and desperate to be prettier are the main reasons for more people in China to undergo surgery, experts analyzed.
Liu Yi,a 27yearold female worker in Beijing, told China Daily on Friday that she always thought her face had a little baby fat and she tried many ways, such as eating little or doing facial massage to get rid of the fat.
“I thought of plastic surgery, but seeing so many failed cases,I would rather have baby fat.”she said.
Every year more than 3 million people have plastic surgery in China and there are 50,000 cosmetic plastic organizations across the country with more than 200,000 staff,China Business Daily reported on Monday.
Medical plastic surgeries fail for more than 20,000 people every year, and there are many cases where victims and doctors meet in the court. The girls try to be more beautiful, only to drop themselves into trouble.
China has tried in the past decade to manage and supervise its medical cosmetology industry. In 2001,the Ministry of Health issued regulations on the cosmetic plastic industry, elaborating the procedures of registration, certification of the staff and other requirements.
In 2009,the Ministry introduced the categorization system for cosmetic surgeries and elaborated the scope of different medical organizations.
On Nov.5,ViceMinister Ma said in a conference on the development of China’s medical cosmetology industry in Guangzhou that a guideline for China’s medical cosmetology industry should be finished as soon as possible.
Many experts said that people should pursue inner beauty instead of physical charms and that nothing was more important than health and life.

Have you ever noticed the colour of the water in a river or stream after a heavy rainfall? What do you think caused this change in colour? It is soil that has been washed into the river from the riverbank or from the nearby fields.
Components of Soil
Soil is made up of a number of layers(层),each having its own distinctive colour and texture. The upper layer is known as the litter. It acts like a blanket, limiting temperature changes and reducing water loss. The topsoil layer is made up of small particles of rock mixed with rotten plant and animal matter called humus(腐殖质),which is black and gives the topsoil its dark colour. This layer is usually rich in nutrients, oxygen, and water.Below the topsoil is the subsoil,a layer that contains more stones mixed with only small amounts of organic matter. This layer is lighter in colour because of the lack of humus.Beneath the soil lies a layer of bedrock.
Soil forms from the bottom to up.Over time bedrock is attacked by rain, wind, frost and snow.It is gradually broken down into smaller particles in a process called weathering.Plants begin to grow, and rotten materials enrich the topsoil. Most of the soil in Eastern Canada, for example, was formed from weathered rock that was exposed when the ice disappeared 12,000 years ago.
Water Beneath the Soil
Surface water collects and flows above the ground in lakes, ponds and rivers.Once in the soil or rock,it is called groundwater.Gravity pulls groundwater through the soil in a process called percolation(渗透).Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water table.Under this is bedrock through which water cannot percolate.
As water percolates downward,it dissolves organic matter and minerals from the soil and carries them to deeper layers. This causes a serious problem because plants require these nutrients for growth.
Soil pH
Soil can be acidic, neutral,or basic. The pH of the soil is determined by the nature of the rock from which it was formed, and by the nature of the plants that grow and rot in it.
The acidity of rain and snow can lower the pH of the groundwater that enters the soil.By burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gasoline, humans have been contributing to higher levels of acidity in many soils. When fossil fuels are burned, gases are released into the air and then fall back to earth as acid rain.Acid soil increases the problem of carrying nutrients to lower soil levels. As nutrients are removed, soil is less fertile.Plants grow more slowly in acidic soil, and also become easily attacked by diseases.
4.The layer of soil that provides necessary nutrients for plant growth is called ________.
A.litter B.topsoil
C.humus
D.subsoil
5.According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?
A.Soil forms from weathered rock on the earth surface.
B.The deeper layer of soil is darker in colour than the surface soil.
C.Air pollution is partially responsible for acid soil.
D.Groundwater tends to carry away nutrients for plant growth.
6.We can infer from the passage that the water table lies ________.
A.between the topsoil layer and the subsoil layer
B.in the subsoil layer above bedrock
C.between the subsoil layer and bedrock
D.in the bedrock layer beneath the subsoil
7.The underlined word “dissolve”

Communication Principles
How you see yourself can make a great difference in how you communicate.“Every individual exists in a continually changing world of experience of which he(or she)is the center”.Many communication scholars and social scientists believe that people are products of how others treat them and of the messages others send them. But every day we experience the centrality of ourselves in communication.A student, for instance, may describe a conflict with a teacher as unfair treatment:“I know my teacher doesn’t like the fact that I don’t agree with his opinions, and that’s why he gave me such a poor grade in that class.” The teacher might say the opposite. Each person may believe that he is correct and that the other person’s view is wrong.
The concept of self originates in communication.Through verbal and nonverbal symbols,a child learns to accept roles in response to the expectations of others. You establish selfimage, the sort of person you believe you are,by how others think of you. Positive, negative, and neutral messages that you receive from others all play a role in determining who you are.Communication itself is probably best understood as a dialogue process. Our understanding of communication comes from our interactions with other people. In a more obvious way, communication involves others in the sense that a competent communicator considers what the other person needs and expects when selecting messages to share. So,the communication begins with the self,as defined largely by others, and involves others,as defined largely by the self.
Communication occurs almost every minute of your life.If you are not communicating with yourself(thinking, planning, reacting to the world around you), you are observing others and drawing inferences from their behavior.Even if the other person did not intend a message for you, you gather observations and draw specific conclusions. A person yawns and you believe that the person is bored with your message.A second person looks away from you and you conclude that the person is not listening to you.A third person smiles(perhaps because of a memory of a joke he heard recently) and you believe that he is attracted to you. We are continually picking up meanings from others’ behaviors and we are constantly providing behaviors that have communicative value for them.
More often than not, you may have hurt someone accidentally and you may have tried to explain that you did not mean that. You may have told the other person that you were sorry for your statement. You may have made a joke out of your rude statement.Nonetheless, your comment remains both in the mind of the other person and in your own mind. You cannot go back in time and erase your messages to others.Communication cannot be reversed(倒退),nor can it be repeated. When you tried to recreate the atmosphere, the conversation, and the setting, nothing seemed right.Your second experience with a similar setting and person made far different results.

What time is it?Most people are pretty accurate in their answers. And if you don’t know for sure,it’s very likely that you can find out. There may be a watch on your wrist;there may be a clock on the wall, desk,or computer screen;or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard (仪表板).
Even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby, your body keeps its own beat.Humans have an internal clock that regulates (调节) the beating of our heart, the pace of our breathing, the discharge(排出)of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions.
Time is something from which we can’t escape.Even if we ignore it,it’s still going by, ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour.So the main issue in using your time well is,“Who’s in charge?”We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy.Or we can take control of it and make it our ally.
By taking control of how you spend your time, you’ll increase your chances of becoming a more successful student.Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your studies, the more time you will have to spend on your outside interests.
The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become slaves of a timetable that governs every waking moment of the day.Instead, the aim is to permit us to make informed choices as to how we use our time.Rather than letting the day go by,largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.

A.your slave and serves you
B.your supporter and helps you
C.under your control and obeys you
D.under your influence and follows you
2.The author intends to tell us that time ________.
A.could be regulated by a timepiece such as a clock or a watch
B.could be managed by the internal clock of human bodies
C.should be well managed for our own interest
D.should be saved for outside interests
3.In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you ________.
A.how to keep up with the time
B.how to make up for lost time
C.how to have a good time
D.how to make good use of time

It was the first snow of winter—an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers.Up until now,I had been able to dress myself for recess(课间休息),but today I would need some help.Miss Finlayson,my kindergarten teacher at Princess Elizabeth School near Hamilton,Ontario, had been through first snow days many times in her long career, but I think she may still remember this one.
I managed to get into my wool snow pants. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn’t fit well.It was a handmedown from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and matching scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her calm, motherly voice she said,“By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots.”I didn’t realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.
I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot.Like most children,I expected the adult to do all the work. After much wiggling and pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.
I announced,“They’re on the wrong feet.”With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again. Then I said,“These aren’t my boots, you know.”As she pulled the offending boots from my feet, she still managed to look both helpful and interested.Once they were off,I said,“They are my brother’s boots. My mother makes me wear them, and I hate them!”Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn’t an annoying little girl. She pushed and shoved, less gently this time, and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. With a great sigh of relief, seeing the end of her struggle with me,she asked,“Now,where are your gloves?”
I looked into her eyes and said,“I didn’t want to lose them,so I put them into the toes of my boots”.

Some days you wake up and right when you are going to begin your work, you feel a presence within you that stops you from doing so.You don’t want to work today and you don’t feel motivated to do anything but just escape.Without this motivation, you feel a little hopeless, lost, and stuck. But sometimes even if there is no motivation, you can still feel inspired.
Connect the Dots
Steve Jobs has never finished college. After studying in college for 6 months,he couldn’t see the value in it and dropped out.Not knowing where to go in life,he decided to take a class in calligraphy(书法).Ten years later,he designed something that has affected the different types of typography(排版)that we use today. If he hadn’t dropped out in college,he would never have taken that calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography.
Sometimes when you’re trying to reach a goal,it’s impossible to connect the dots where you currently are.Somehow you just have to trust yourself, and have faith that you will reach your dreams, despite not having the slightest clue or perfectly laidout road to where you are going.Nobody can connect the dots looking forward;you only can connect them when you’re looking backwards. You have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in the future;you have to trust in something, whether it’s destiny(天数,命运)or not,but trusting yourself is the first step towards feeling inspired and having the motivation to move forward.
Perfect Your Environment
Look around your room right now or your workspace.Does it inspire you?Does it give you motivation? Is it noisy or quiet?Sometimes the hardest thing we do to ourselves is try to force ourselves to work in an area that is subconsciously telling us,“I can’t work here.”
And when you are constantly trying to discipline yourself, you will feel worse and be less productive.Instead, try to build your ideal workplace and ideal time.Perhaps add a piece of artwork or a quote of your favorite person nearby you on the wall.Maybe add a beautiful plant in the corner to give you inspiration. If you feel more energy and enthusiasm during the night, schedule your day to work at midnight if you can.If you can realize the power of having a productive environment, you will naturally feel inspired and motivated to get work done.
Don’t Work So Hard
If you’re trying to force your way into taking action,it could be a sign that you are working too hard. Most people won’t wake up and waste an hour imagining, thinking further, or confirming, and the first thing they think about is asking“what do I need to do today?”And when they get the answer, they feel miserable,as if their work suddenly weighs them down. But if you spend time focusing on your goals, you’ll receive good feelings-feelings that help you feel inspired and motivated to take real action.
Don’t try to paddle upstream. That just basically equals saying to yourself that you need to force yourself to work hard every day.Instead, paddle along the stream of the river.Trust yourself, let your environment work in your favor, and spend some a little bit of time putting yourself in a state before you work.Inspiration will come to you from different ways-inside and outside-and give you the motivation to guide yourself towards reaching your dreams.
Brief Introduction Lacking motivation makes you feel 1.____________ to do anything and even feel hopeless, lost and stuck. However you can still feel inspired sometimes though you don’t have 2.____________.

When women sit together to watch a movie on TV,they usually talk simultaneously(同时地)about a variety of subjects, including children, men, careers and what’s happening in their lives. When groups of men and women watch a movie together, the men usually end up telling the women to shut up.Men can either talk or watch the screen—they can’t do both—and they don’t understand that women can.Besides, women consider that the point of all getting together is to have a good time and develop relationships—not just to sit there like couch potatoes staring at the screen.
During the ad breaks,a man often asks a woman to explain the plot and tell him where the relationship between the characters is going. He is unable, unlike women,to read the subtle body language signals that reveal how the characters are feeling emotionally.Since women originally spent their days with the other women and children in the group, they developed the ability to communicate successfully in order to maintain relationships. For a woman, speech continues to have such a clear purpose:to build relationships and make friends. For men,to talk is to relate the facts.
Men see the telephone as a communication tool for sending facts and information to other people, but a woman sees it as a means of bonding.A woman can spend two weeks on vacation with her girlfriend and, when she returns home, telephone the same girlfriend and talk for another two hours.
There is no convincing evidence that social conditioning, the fact that girls’mothers talked to them more,is the reason why girls talk more than boys.Psychiatrist Dr.Michael Lewis, author of Social Behaviour and Language Acquisition, conducted experiments that found mothers talked to,and looked at,baby girls more often than baby boys.Scientific evidence shows parents respond to the brain bias of their children.Since a girl’s brain is better organized to send and receive speech,we therefore talk to them more.Consequently, mothers who try to talk to their sons are usually disappointed to receive only short grunts in reply.
1.While watching TV with others, women usually talk a lot because they ________.
A.are afraid of awkward silence with their families and friends
B.can both talk and watch the screen at the same time
C.think they can have a good time and develop relationships
D.have to explain the plot and body language to their husbands
2.After a vacation with her girlfriend,a woman would talk to her again on the phone for hours in order to ________.
A.experience the happy time again
B.keep a close tie with her
C.recommend her a new scenic spot
D.remind her of something forgotten
3.What does the author want to tell us most?
A.Women’s brains are better organized for language and communication.
B.Women love to talk because they are more sociable than men.
C.Men do not like talking because they rely more on facts.
D.Social conditioning is not the reason why women love talking.
4.Which of the following would be the BEST title for the passage?
A.Women Are Socially Trained to Talk
B.Talking Maintains Relationships
C.Women Love to Talk
D.Men Talk Differently from Women

We experience different forms of the Sun’s energy every day.We can see its light and feel its warmth. The Sun is the major source of energy for our planet. It causes the evaporation (蒸发)of water from the oceans and lakes.Sunlight also provides the energy used by green plants to make their own food. These green plants then provide food for all organisms(生物)on the Earth.
Much of the energy that comes from the Sun never reaches the Earth’s surface. It is either reflected or absorbed by the gases in the upper atmosphere.Of the energy that reaches the lower atmosphere,30%is reflected by clouds or the Earth’s surface. The remaining 70% warms the surface of the planet, causes water to evaporate, and provides energy for the water cycle and weather.Only a tiny part, approximately 0.023%,is actually used by green plants to produce food.
Many gases found in the atmosphere actually reflect heat energy escaping from the Earth’s surface back to the Earth. These gases act like the glass of a greenhouse in that they allow energy from the Sun to enter but prevent energy from leaving. They are therefore called greenhouse gases.
When sunlight strikes an object, some of the energy is absorbed and some is reflected. The amount reflected depends on the surface. For example, you’ve probably noticed how bright snow is when sunlight falls on it.Snow reflects most of the energy from the Sun,so it contributes to the low temperatures of winter.Darkcoloured surfaces, such as dark soil or forest, absorb more energy and help warm the surrounding air.

A.all living things on the Earth depend on the Sun for their food

Teamwork is just as important in science as it is on the playing field or in the gym.Scientific investigations(调查)are almost always carried out by teams of people working together.Ideas are shared, experiments are designed, data are analyzed, and results are evaluated and shared with other investigators.Group work is necessary, and is usually more
productive than working alone.
Several times throughout the year you may be asked to work with one or more of your classmates.Whatever the task your group is assigned,a few rules need to be followed to ensure a productive and successful experience.
What comes first is to keep an open mind, because everyone’s ideas deserve consideration and each group member can make his or her own contribution.Secondly,it makes a job easier to divide the group task among all group members.Choose a role on the team that is best suited to your particular strengths.Thirdly, always work together, take turns, and encourage each other by listening clarifying, and trusting one another.Mutual support and trust often makes a great difference.
Activities like investigations are most effective when done by small groups. Here are some more suggestions for effective team performance during these activities:Make sure each group member understands and agrees to the task given to him or her,and everyone knows exactly when, why and what to do;take turns doing various tasks during similar and repeated activities;be aware of where other group members are and what they are doing so as to ensure safety;be responsible for your own learning, though it is by no means unwise to compare your observations with those of other group members.
When there is research to be done, divide the topic into several areas, and this can explore the issue in a very detailed way.You are encouraged to keep records of the sources used by each person, which helps you trace back to the origin of the problems that may happen unexpectedly.A format for exchanging information(e.g.,photocopies of notes, oral discussion.etc.)is also important, for a wellchosen method not only strengthens what you present but also makes yourself easily understood. When the time comes to make a decision and take a position on an issue, allow for the contributions of each member of the group. Most important of all,it is always wise to make decisions by compromise and agreement.
