  四、阅读理解(共

  小题;每题

  分,满分

  分)A

Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein, in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by using his imagination.

Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes. Dr. Epstein explained that it was actually a way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led. The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. “Maybe I could go as Superman,” he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume, but finally she agreed. The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation.

The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

It doesn’t mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But next time you are tested in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it. Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.

  51. What do we know about Tom?

  A. He was seriously ill

  B. He was a dishonest boy.

  C. He was crazy about magic.

  D. He was Dr. Epstein’s patient.

  52. What can be inferred about Tom’s mother?

  A. She was a rich lady.

  B. She refused Tom’s request.

  C. She wanted Tom to be a superhero.

  D. She wanted to get Tom through the pain.

  53. When Tom went for the third operation, he ______.

  A. pretended to be painful

  B. acted like a superhero

  C. appeared in poor spirits

  D. argued with his mother

  54. In the last paragraph, you are advised ______.

  A. to go through some difficult tests

  B. to wake up from your wild dreams

  C. to become a powerful person in your mind

  D. to wear expensive clothes for job interviews

  55. What is the purpose of the passage?

  A. To tell us an interesting story.

  B. To help us make right decisions.

  C. To advise us to care about children.

  D. To encourage us to use our imagination.

  B

Bicycles are very popular around the world nowadays. People ride their bicycles for exercise and enjoyment. In some places, people use bicycles to get to work. In other places, bicycle riding is a very popular exercise to people who live in cities. But who invented the first bicycle?

In 1791, a Frenchman named Comte de Sivrac invented and owned the first bicycle. Mrs. Sivrac rode the bicycle in Paris. The handles and the seat were wooden. This bicycle was very difficult to move. A rider even had to pick up the front wheel to change direction. What's worse, the bicycle had no brakes for stopping or pedals for the feet! Riding a bicycle took great risk.

In 1817, a German named Baron von Drais de Sauerbrun made the first bicycle better. The seat became more comfortable. The wheel could now change direction. His ride in the forest took only one hour instead of three hours on foot, which surprised people at that time.

Sauerbrun brought this kind of bicycle from Germany to France. Then Denis Johnson, an Englishman, made a bicycle for women. It had space for their dresses to hang down. But these bicycles still had no brakes or pedals, and riders often got hurt. These bicycles and the people who rode them were not very popular.

It took another forty-five years for the bicycle to become popular. More than 100 years later, bicycle riding is more popular than ever. In fact, in India and China, there are still many more bicycles than cars.

SHOULD parents ever hit their children?

Research suggests many of us are likely to respond “no”, and public support for spanking(打屁股) has been falling over the years. But surveys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit to spanking their children at least once.

I was raised in a zero-tolerance(零容忍) home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment. And, no, I don’t feel I was damaged by it. Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children. But there

data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn’t the answer.

Two years ago, Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive.

Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades. He said that children who are physically punished have lower IQs than their peers(同辈人). It may be that children with low IQs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterproductive(反作用) to their mental development, as well.

Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks (用巴掌打) on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefits.

Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never been spanked. There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished. Gunnoe’s research suggests they don’t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spanked.

There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers. But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline without ever turning to physical punishment.

  61. What can we know from the research in the second paragraph?

  A. Many of the parents made no response to the survey.

  B. More and more people support spanking in public.

  C. Most parents have the experience of spanking their children.

  D. Many of the parents think they should hit their children.

  62. According to Marjorie Gunnoe’s research,___________.

  A. the children who are physically punished have lower IQs

  B. spanking is of great benefit to everyone

  C. the children who have never been spanked don’t behave any better than those who were sometimes spanked

  D. the teens who were often spanked are more likely to be aggressive

  63. In the author’s opinion, the best parents are the ones________.

  A. who often use physical punishment

  B. who discipline their children fairly without physical punishment

  C. who use physical punishment occasionally

  D. who take physical punishment as a useful tool

  64. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

  A. The author’s parents were strict with him when he was young.

  B. The author thinks his parents’ spanking did no harm to him.

  C. Murray Straus thinks spanking has nothing to do with children’s IQs.

  D. Some parents spank their children because they can’t control their tempers.

  65. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

  A. Spanking does Harm to the Children.

  B. The Advantages of Spanking.

  C. The Relationship between Spanking and IQs.

  D. To Spank or Not to Spank?

  五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

A new study shows that human beings had the ability to make fire nearly 790,000 years ago, a skill that helped them to move from Africa to Europe.

By analyzing flints(燧石) found at a site on the bank of the river Jordan, researchers discovered that early civilizations had learned how to make fire, which was a turning point that allowed them to explore unknown lands.

A study of the site published in 2004 showed that man had been able to control fire in that early time period, passing it by means of burning branches, for example. Researchers, however, now said that ancient people could actually start fire—rather than just relying on natural phenomena, such as lightning—which helped the ancient people move northward.

The new study made a survey of 12 different time periods at Gesher in northern Israel and was led by Nira Alperson. “The new study shows that there was a continued, controlled use of fire through many civilizations and that they didn’t just depend on natural fires,” Nira said on Sunday.

While they did not find any signs of ancient matches, Nira said the burned flint found in the same place throughout the 12 different time periods was evidence of ancient people’s fire-making ability, though they weren’t very sure what methods were used.

As the site is in the Jordan valley—an important route between Africa and Europe—it can provide evidence of the movement of humans out of Africa into other lands. “Once they learned to use fire to protect themselves from animals and provide warmth and light, they were safe enough to move into and settle down in new places.” Nira said.

  W: Sure.

  (Text 8)

Hi, everyone! I’d like to tell you about my memories of the past. My first holiday away from home was at the age of ten. I went to stay with my aunt at the seaside. It wasn’t a very happy experience. I felt very homesick at first. When I was five years old, I spent my first day at school and I took all my toys, toy cars, wooden gun, etc, with me but none of my teachers would let me bring my toys there. In the end it was agreed that I could keep my teddy bear. I didn’t have a very good time at school. I wasn’t very bright. The teachers didn’t seem to like me, so I had few chances to answer questions, but I made a lot of friends and some of them now I still keep in touch with. They all live in different cities, though. My favorite teacher was Miss Robinson, and she also was my first teacher. She was very kind, beautiful, a marvelous storyteller. I miss her very much.
