It is universally acknowledged that practice makes perfect. Needless to say, practice is of great significance for us to challenge drawbacks and achieve success.

It remains fresh in my memory that there was a time when I suffered great frustration in learning English. Failing to master the new words, I gave way to despair, as a consequence of which my academic performance got from bad to worse. Fortunately, a scene that happened to a little boy changed me. At that time I accidentally found two boys practicing riding bicycle on the playground. One of them learned to ride at once, while the other seemed not to master the skill. Though constantly falling off the bicycle and in pain, he never abandoned it. Instead, he encouraged himself to practice over and over again. At length, he could ride skillfully. Inspired by him, I set about paying more attention and energy to practicing English words and sentences and eventually the progress achieved was considerable.

As is shown in the case above, it’s diligence or practice again and again, rather than intelligence that accounts for your success.

  (Text 1)

W: Sir, can I come in now?

M: Sorry, Lady. I am afraid that you have to wait half an hour, for our business hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

  (Text 2)

W: Well, Mr. Li. It’s early and you’ve come a long way just for an interview.

M: Yes. We read your advertisement in the paper and my aunt said that this is a very good firm and since I’d like to be a lawyer some day, we thought the job would give me a new start.

  (Text 3)

M: Have you finished reading the book you bought last month?

W: Oh, I didn’t read straight through the way you read a novel. I just covered a few chapters which interested me most.

  (Text 4)

M: No, I didn’t. Isn’t it right next to the computer?

W: No, and I don’t see it anywhere. I have the feeling one of our party guests took it.

M: Really? What are you going to do now?

W: I’ll just tell my parents what happened, I guess.

M: Then they’ll know you had people over without permission. Won’t they be angry about that?

W: Probably. I wish I’d done that from the start, instead of keeping my plans secret. They’d have said no to a party, and the MP3 player would still be here.

  (Text 7)

W: Where were you this weekend, Bob? I tried to call you.

M: I went out shopping. I suppose you phoned me in the morning, didn’t you?

W: Yes, it was late morning.

M: Why did you try to call me?

W: I wanted to ask if you’d like to come to dinner on Sunday.

M: Oh, what a pity! I’d love to have come, but actually, Sunday would have been difficult, because I went on a river trip the whole day. I wonder how the dinner party was.

W: Well, we had a wonderful time. I thought you might enjoy it because Tom and his wife were coming. You have met him before.

M: Tom? Yes, I rather like him.

W: And we had a lovely dinner. We had green cabbage, soup, fresh salad and so on.

  M: Very nice, too.

  (Text 8)

M: Hi, Jenny. Is it true you’re moving to London?

  W: Yes, it is.

M: What made you decide to do that?

W: Work, mainly. I’m sure I’ll be able to find a job there.

M: You’re probably right. But where are you going to live?

W: I hope I’ll find a flat to share with somebody. That way it will be cheaper.

M: Yes, that’s a good idea. Are you taking your dog with you?

W: No, I don’t think so, my parents have offered to take care of him, and I don’t think he’d think he’d be happy in the city.

M: You’re probably right. But aren’t you afraid of moving to such a big place, especially after living in a small village?

W: Not really. I think I’ll enjoy myself. There’s so much to do there. I expect I won’t miss the countryside much and I can always come back and visit.

M: Well, I just hope you’ll invite me to stay when you get settled.

  W: Of course I will.

  (Text 9)

W: Bobby, turn that TV off and set the table. Dinner is almost ready.

  M: OK I’ll be right down…

W: Honey, there are only going to be three of us tonight. Your father’s plane was delayed, so he won’t be home until after 10:00.

M: Aw, man! Why does he always have to travel so much? I feel like I never get to see him anymore.

W: I know. Your sister and I feel the same way, but this is the way it has to be right now.

M: But you never travel for your job.

W: That’s because I work from home. I guess I’m lucky, but there are disadvantages, too. Your father is gone a lot, but he also makes good money.

M: Why doesn’t he work from home?

W: Well, working in sales means you have to be on the road a lot. If he stayed at home, how would he ever sell anything?

M: I guess you’re right. When I grow up, I’m not going to choose work over family like Dad.

W: Don’t be too hard on your father, Bobby. He is doing this for us. You should be thankful.

  (Text 10)

Good morning, team. I’m happy to see all of you here this Saturday. As part of your training for the spring track and field events, we’ll spend all the time today on the relay. In a

relay race, each member of a team of four runners runs a certain distance before being replaced by another team member. Usually a team begins with the second fastest runner, then the slowest, then the third fastest. The fastest runner is the last. In a relay race, the runners carry a baton, which is passed from one team member to the next. The runner stands to the left of the track in a start position, head turned to look at the oncoming runner. When the oncoming runner reaches a certain mark, the waiting runner begins to run. They both run the course for a moment before the baton is passed. The exchange must be made within twenty meters or the team will be taken out of the race. There are four methods of exchange, which I will show you.
