MADRID, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- A wildfire in the Central Spanish province of Leon has charred over 8,000 hectares of land, local media reported on Tuesday.
The president of the Castilla and Leon regional government Juan Vicente Herrera said the fire that had burned for two days was a "tragedy".
This is the worst fire that happens in Leon over the last 10 years and there are 800 firefighters and 20 aircraft working to extinguish the flames.
The fire of Leon was the most severe among the 15 active fires in the country. The situation was complicated as Spain is experiencing a heat wave these days with temperatures that exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
Fires in Spain have burned 140,000 hectares of wild land and have killed several people this summer.
