Have you ever noticed an advertisement which says Learn a foreign language in six weeks, or your money back! From the first day your pronunciation will be excellent. Just send and so on? Of course, it never happens quite like that. The only language that is easy to learn is the mother tongue. And think how much practice that gets! Before the Second World War people usually learned a foreign language in order to read the literature(文学)of the country. Now speaking the foreign language is what most people want. Every year many millions of people start learning one. How do they do it? Some people try at home, with books and tapes; some use radio or television programmes; others go to evening classes. If they use the language only two or three times a week, learning it will take a long time, like language learning at school. A few people try to learn a language fast by studying for six or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn the language in the country where it is spoken. However, most people cannot afford this, and for many it is not necessary. They need the language in order to do their work better. For example, scientists and doctors mainly need to be able to read books and reports in the foreign language. Whether the language is learned quickly or slowly, it is hard work. Machines and good books will help, but they cannot do the students work for him.

People like to say: The hand that rocks (摇动) the cradle (摇篮) rules the world. Or they say: Behind every successful man, there is a woman.. Now some women still like making their husbands and sons successful. But some women want more for themselves. They went to be successful as men. Today the best jobs are still given to men. Even when women do the same work, they are often paid less than men. Some women want these things changed. They want to stand beside the men, with the same chances for success. Now many American women are earning money outside their homes. More than half of the women at the age of eighteen to sixty-five have good jobs. In general, working women have more education than those who stay at home. Among women with jobs, eight out of ten drive a car to work, and most of them often spend their holidays away from home. They like traveling by air. Womens work had made several changes in womens lives- and in mens lives, too. But things are quite different from those in the Middle East countries. In the Middle East countries, women have to stay at home. Their duty is to look after their families and do all the housework. They cant find work outside. When they go out in public, they cover their faces with something and walk behind their husbands. For the past few years the womens life has been changing in those countries. Many women want to play an active role in the society (社会). Though working gives them few chances of getting married, many men still want to marry them in the old ways.

Do you know how to write an English letter? When we write a letter in Chinese, we always put the date at the end of the letter. But it is different in English. We have to put it on the top of the right corner. And above the date, we also write the number of our house and the names of our street, city and country. To begin the letter, we always use words like Dear sir,Dear Mr. / Miss / Mrs. At the end of the letter, we usually use words like Yours Yours everorTruly yours. It is also different to write an English envelope (信封).If to an American friend Jane Shute, write your name and address on the top of the left corner and write hers in the middle. Now read the following envelope, please.
