掷链球(hammer)起源于中世纪苏格兰矿工在劳动之余用带木柄的生产工具铁锤进行的掷远比赛,后逐渐在英国流行。链球的英语(hammer)词意即铁锤。19世纪后期,成为英国牛津大学和剑桥大学运动会的比赛项目。当时使用的器械是将木柄的铁球,后为便于投掷,将木柄改为钢链,链球由此而来。
