The Newport Folk FestivalAugust 3 to August 5 Since the inaugural
Since the inaugural 1958 festival, the Newport Folk Festival is renowned for presenting the very best in traditional and up-and-coming folk artists. And, of course, the stunning setting near picturesque Narragansett Bay doesnt hurt in making this one of our favorite folk festivals.
This years Newport Folk Festivals lineup features legendary figures in songwriting, new voices from both hemispheres and dynamic bands who will bring the crowd to their feet . Many musicians such as bluegrass master Sam Bush, acoustic blues player John Mooney and Joan Osborne are among the artists in the festival program which begins Friday, August 3 and continues through Sunday, August 5.
If youre wondering how to sustain yourself during a full day of great folk music, heres just a sampling of what youll discover in the festival food tents and crafts market.
Pick Pockets Deli is one of the longest-standing food vendors, which is known for their homemade pita breads and fresh Middle eastern selections. Their falafel, hummus and tahina pockets make perfect festival fare. What would summer in Rhode Island be without great seafood ? Cove Grill of Jamestown, Rhode Island brings the taste of the bay to Fort Adams. This year the seafood hut will feature a menu consisting of fresh lobster rolls, stuffies, and french fries.
As you enter the festival grounds, you cant miss the colorful crafts market that has been part of this festival for the past 16 years. Some 50 artisans and folk related exhibitors are featured each year. Youll find clothing, jewelry, pottery, stained glass, woodwork, leatherwork, musical instruments, and many other surprises. While shopping the crafts market, be sure to check out the nearby festival merchandise booth featuring official festival T-shirts, tank tops, sweats, and hats.
