UK Pub Culture
Pubs are a way of life in the UK. They are a place to meet locals or other tourists. They usually have filling meals at relatively inexpensive prices. Do not expect table service at a pub. You order your drinks and pay for them at the bar. You are not expected to tip the bartender but you may offer him/her a drink and they will add the price of a drink to your order. You might do this once or twice over the course of an evening, not every time you order a drink. Some tourists do leave change or a tip on the bar and it is accepted but its not the local way of doing things. You order and pay for your food at the bar as well but check to see if there is a small metal plate affixed to your table with a number on it. Give that table number to the bar staff when you order your food and it will be brought to you.
Big Ben
Big Benis the nickname for the great bellof theclockat the north end of the Palace of Westminsterin London
The design for the Clock Tower was Pugins last design before his final descent into madness and death, and Pugin himself wrote:I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all the designs for finishing his bell tower and it is beautiful!
Tower is designed in Pugins celebrated Gothic Revivalstyle, and is 316 feet high.
The clock and dials were designed by Pugin as well. The clock dials are set in an iron frame 23 feet in diameter, supporting 312 pieces of opal glass, rather like a stained-glass window. Some of the glass pieces may be removed for inspection of the hands. The surround of the dials is gilded . At the base of each clock dial in gilt letters is the Latin inscription:
DOMINE SALVAM FAC REGINAM NOSTRAM VICTORIAM PRIMAM
Despite being one of the worlds most famous tourist attractions, the interior of the tower is not open to overseas visitors
The tower has no lift, so those escorted must climb the 334 limestone stairs to the top.
