英语中的“桥”言“桥”语

桥梁真的是一项伟大的建筑发明，让人们可以在更短的时间内到达更远的地方。英语中有不少跟桥相关的习语，多数也是从其字面意思衍生出来的，我们一起来看一看。

船到桥头自然直(cross that bridge when one comes to it)

即有问题出现再去解决。

例：

Martin asked what we'd do if our new company couldn't find good staff when we needed to expand, and I said we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

马丁问如果我们的新公司需要扩张的时候找不到好员工怎么办，我说船到桥头自然直，等问题出现时再设法解决不迟。

不留后路(burn one's bridges behind one)

过了桥，就烧了它(having crossed it, you could always burn the bridge)，这个表达是指“切断所有退路。类似的表达还有破釜沉舟(burn one's boats)。

例：

I'd already burned my bridges with my previous employer by publicly criticizing their products.

我公开批评原来就职的公司的产品，已经切断了再回去工作的退路。

搭建桥梁(为了建立两个组织间关系进行的活动)(bridge-building)

Bridge-building是具有比喻意义的名词，意为“(两国、两团体或两派之间的)友好往来，友善活动。

例：

Many non-governmental organizations are working to boost cross-Strait bridge-building and cultural exchanges.

许多非政府组织正努力增进海峡两岸的友好往来和文化交流。

土包子(bridge-and-tunnel)

Bridge-and-tunnel原指来自纽约城郊区的人(相对于曼哈顿)，他们来曼哈顿需要“过大桥穿隧道，后来引申指土包子、无知的人、傻帽、思想狭隘的人，具有不懂世故或不入潮流的特点。可以缩写为B&T或BNT。

例：

The clubs are hopping tonight, but it's mostly the bridge and tunnel crowd.

俱乐部今晚特别忙，不过客人主要是些土包子。

永无止尽的任务(paint the Forth Bridge)

原指苏格兰中部的福斯铁路大桥表面刷漆的浩大工程，据说等到把桥梁全部油漆一遍之后，前面的已经褪色，就又得开始重新油漆了，所以paint the Forth Bridge意为永无止境的或艰巨的任务。

例：

Keeping the county’s roads in good shape is like painting the Forth Bridge because as soon as you’ve resurfaced a stretch of road, it begins to deteriorate again due to the number of vehicles which travel along it.

维持国内公路的良好状态简直是做不完的工作，因为你刚刚把一段路面重新铺好，它就又开始因为每天在路上跑的大量车辆而磨损了。

逝者如斯夫(water under the bridge)

无法重新来过或不值得再讨论的往事;另一种解释是很长时间过去了(a long time has passed)。

例：

I should probably have asked for more money when I was offered the job, but hey, that's water under the bridge now.

我拿到这份工作的时候，或许该要求更高的薪资来着。不过， 嗨，现在说什么都晚了。

难以实现的目标(a bridge too far)

A bridge too far这个习语源自二战时期盟军的一次空降作战行动。作战目标是攻取11座具有战略意义的桥梁，打开通路直捣柏林，但是该作战行动在阿纳姆遭到惨败。据说，弗雷德里克·布朗宁中将从一开始就对此作战持怀疑态度，在行动发起之前，他曾经向陆军元帅蒙哥马利说了这样一句：“we may be going a bridge too far。这一表达因1974年的小说和1977年的同名电影《遥远的桥(A Bridge Too Far)》而广泛普及。

例：

Earning my doctorate degree within five years might just be a bridge too far for me!

五年之内拿到博士学位对我来说是很难达到的目标。
