The Queen is due to become Britain's longest-reigning monarch next month, and to celebrate, a new exhibition charting her years on the throne is to open next month at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

A mixture of formal portraits and relaxed family photos, the collection includes the first official photograph of Her Majesty, who is now 89, a black and white profile taken just three weeks after she took the throne in January 1952.The exhibition will open its doors on the 9th September - the same day the Queen passes the record of 63 years, 216 days set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

All will be put on display at the three major royal palaces of Holyroodhouse, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.The photos on display also include a recent snap of the Queen taken during this year's Order of the Garter procession at Windsor in June, which shows the Queen smiling broadly as she walks in her Garter robes.

Other images include Cecil Beaton's 1953 official Coronation Day portrait and Julian Calder’s photograph of the Queen amid the heather on the Balmoral Estate, dressed in the Order of the Thistle robes.

The Queen is poised to enter the history books on September 9 when she becomes the country's longest reigning monarch. She will overtake the record held by Queen Victoria. Victoria, who became known as Empress of India during her lifetime, reigned for 23,226 days 16 hours and 23 minutes and died in 1901 aged 81 having taken the throne at 18 in June 1837.
