The US and three big emerging market countrieshave bolstered hopes for a global climate changedeal this year by unveiling fresh plans to curbgreenhouse gas emissions.
In a day of cascading announcements in capitalsaround the world, the presidents of the US andBrazil jointly announced plans to each generate20 per cent of their electricity from non-hydropowerrenewable sources, such as wind and solar power, by2030.
Separately, China, the world’s biggest carbon polluter, and South Korea formally submittedclimate change plans to the UN for a December meeting in Paris where countries are due tofinalise an international global warming agreement.
China said it would cut its carbon emissions per unit of gross domestic product by 60-65 percent from 2005 levels by 2030. This followed earlier commitments that its carbon emissionswould peak no later than 2030 and the amount of non-fossil fuels in its energy mix would riseto about 20 per cent by 2030.
The pledges would mean the US tripled the amount of renewable power on its grid, while Brazilwould more than double its share. Brazil also said it would restore 12m hectares of forest by2030, an area nearly the size of England.
The combined pledges mean countries accounting for more than 70 per cent of globalgreenhouse gas emissions have now set out their plans for the Paris meeting. Largeeconomies including India, Japan and Australia have yet formally to table their plans.
