All the kerfuffle over Anshu Jain’s departure fromDeutsche Bank has distracted attention from a moresubtle power shift on the fringes of Europe. FromPortugal to Turkey, Chinese groups have quietlybeen buying up second and third-tier financialservices companies.

So far, there are only hints of broader ambitions. Most of China’s big lenders — such as ChinaConstruction Bank, Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of China — have been absent from anydealmaking.

But there has been a handful of active Chinese buyers, particularly the pair vying for control ofNovo Banco. They have struck five deals worth more than $2.1bn,according to data provider Dealogic.
