As anti-Japanese sentiment has steamed up in China over the past month, Japan's embassy and consulates there have issued several warnings urging citizens to exercise caution when out in public. On Thursday, the consulate in Shanghai released another advisory, but this time including six accounts of Japanese residents harassed by locals.

The consulate indicates the incidents may have been in reaction to the ongoing territorial dispute, as well as to reports that three intoxicated Japanese residents stabbed a Chinese woman that is garnering heated comments on the Internet.

The cases of harassment vary in degree, and none appear to have caused major injury. Some were more aggressive than others.

In one, a Chinese person reportedly approached a group of Japanese walking down the street and poured ramen noodles on one and broke the eyeglasses of another.

In another, a person driving an electric car pulled up to a Japanese pedestrian and threw a carbonated drink in his face.

Other Japanese were called 'stupid' and had a recyclable plastic bottle hurled at them. In another case, a person was kicked repeatedly after being asked if he was Japanese.

The release didn't specify when the events occurred. It reiterated earlier advisories that residents be mindful of their behavior in public, avoid crowded areas and not draw attention to themselves when in large groups.

Even as protests flared across the region some resulting in smashed Japanese-brand cars the discontent appeared initially limited to organized demonstrations. But as the war of words has dragged on, the atmosphere has grown more restive. In late August, an unidentified man attacked the car of Japan's outgoing ambassador, Uichiro Niwa, and ripped its flag.

The embassy has issued four caution alerts in the last month, most recently on Tuesday. Japan's decision to purchase a group of contested islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, this week has set off a fresh wave of reproach. On Friday morning, six Chinese patrol boats entered Japan's territorial waters near the islands, which are controlled by Japan.

A Japanese embassy spokesman in Beijing said it has ramped up security measures this week amid ongoing demonstrations outside the compound.

About 130,000 Japanese nationals were living in China, including Hong Kong, as of October 2010, according to the latest available data.
