SEOUL, May 25 -- South Korea's presidential Blue House said a National Security Council (NSC) meeting, attended by security and diplomatic officials, was held on Friday to discuss ways to restore the cancelled summit between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.
Chung Eui-yong, top national security advisor for President Moon Jae-in, chaired the meeting of the NSC permanent committee for an hour from 3:00 p.m. local time.
The NSC members confirmed the need for direct communications between the DPRK and the U.S. leaders, agreeing to make continued efforts to the direct talks.
U.S. President Donald Trump had been scheduled to meet top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore, but Trump cancelled it Thursday.
The U.S. leader, however, left a room for his meeting with Kim, saying he looked forward to meeting the DPRK leader "some day."
The NSC members shared a view that efforts to improve inter-Korean relations will contribute to enhanced relations between Pyongyang and Washington and complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
The two Koreas had agreed to hold high-level talks last week, but the DPRK called it off at the last minute putting the blame on the South Korea-U.S. air combat exercises scheduled to end Friday.
