丰田上调全年盈利预测

Toyotahas raised its full-year net profit forecast by 2.6 per cent, breaking with deepening pessimism at other Japanese carmakers as robust sales in North America offset the effect of an informal boycott of Japanese vehicles in China.

丰田(Toyota)将全年净利润预期上调2.6%，强劲的北美销售弥补了中国非官方抵制日系车的影响，这使丰田与其它日本汽车制造商不断加深的悲观情绪撇清关系。

Toyota yesterday said it expected to earn a net profit of Y780bn ($9.7bn) in the financial year ending next March, up from a previous projection of Y760bn.

丰田昨日表示，在明年三月结束的财年预期净利润为7800亿日元（合97亿美元），高于之前预计的7600亿日元。

The Japanese carmaker was aided by its relatively small exposure to the Chinese market, a point on which it had been criticised. China has overtaken the US to become the world’s biggest vehicle market but Toyota has been slower than some rivals to throw resources into the country.

Toyota makes about 10 per cent of its sales in China and collects a smaller amount of profits, since earnings must be shared with local joint-venture partners. By contrast, Nissan, its largest Japanese rival, makes one-quarter of its sales in China.

Japanese carmakers have been hurt by a backlash against Japanese products in China that gathered force in September amid a dispute over islands in the East China Sea.

Last week Honda, Japan’s third-largest carmaker by sales, cited a drop in sales in China as it cut its full-year forecast by 20 per cent. Nissan, which reports earnings today, is likely to miss its sales and profit targets as well, Carlos Ghosn, chief executive, suggested in an interview with the Financial Times last week.

Toyota’s sales in China fell 49 per cent in September and were down by nearly the same amount in October. Although the fall was not enough to prompt Toyota to downgrade its profit forecast, the company did reduce its consolidated sales volume estimate by 50,000 vehicles, to 8.75m.

It cited “uncertainties in the Chinese and European market environments for the cut, but said it intended to make up the earnings difference by cost savings.
