BEIJING, June 27 -- Senior Chinese officials on Wednesday met with visiting U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis in Beijing.
Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, and Wei Fenghe, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of National Defense, met with Mattis respectively.
Yang said China and the United States share broad common interests and shoulder major responsibilities in safeguarding world peace and stability, as well as promoting global development and prosperity.
Yang said he hoped the U.S. side will work together with China to strengthen strategic communication, prevent strategic misjudgement, and ensure the development of China-U.S. ties on the right track.
Wei said China stays on the path of peaceful development and the Chinese military unswervingly safeguards national sovereignty, security and development interests.
Stressing that military relations is an important part of bilateral relations, the Chinese side hoped the two sides will promote military ties to be a stabilizer of bilateral relations.
The Chinese side also elaborated on its stance for issues including Taiwan, economy and trade, as well as maritime issue.
Mattis said the United States and China shared important common interests and foundation for cooperation, adding that the U.S. side sticks to the one-China policy.
Mattis said the United States attaches great importance to relations between the two countries and the two militaries, hoping to conduct candid and in-depth communication with China over major strategic issues and actively expand cooperation fields.
Mattis said the United States hopes to tackle differences and carry out common development with China, ensuring there are no conflicts and confrontations between the two countries.
