Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was unambiguous in his response when asked about an ABC World News report that the U.S. Olympic team's opening ceremony uniforms were made in China rather than by American textile workers.
The uniforms, designed by Ralph Lauren, have 'made in China' labels on them, the ABC report said.
Mr. Reid said he thought 'they should take all the outfits, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over.'
Not satisfied, the Democratic leader then had a suggestion for what revised uniforms should look like: 'If they have to wear nothing but a singlet saying USA on it painted by hand, that's what they should do.' (See video of this remarks.)
Of course the source of Mr. Reid's anger was the apparent decision by the U.S. Olympic Committee to order uniforms made in China rather than by workers in America's struggling textiles industry.
A spokeswoman for Ralph Lauren wasn't immediately available for comment.
In a statement, a U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman said: 'Unlike most Olympic teams around the world, the U.S. Olympic Team is privately funded and we're grateful for the support of our sponsors. We're proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company, and excited to watch America's finest athletes compete at the upcoming Games in London.'
Adam Jentleson, a spokesman for Mr. Reid, said on Twitter that the suit the lawmaker was sporting on Thursday was in fact made in the USA.
