Sandy carved a harrowing path of destruction through the East Coast on Monday, charging inland and promising to add to its legacy as one of the most damaging storms to menace the Northeast.

The storm delivered rain, storm-surge floods and even snow across an area stretching from North Carolina to New England. 'It's sure shaping up to be a storm that will be historic in nature,' said Louis Uccellini, director of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, a federal government agency.

Hurricane-force wind gusts from Sandy were reported over Long Island and New York metropolitan areas Monday night, with water levels also rising sharply from coastal storm surges, the National Weather Service said.

Sandy's center was located about 15 miles northwest of Atlantic City, N.J., at 9 p.m. EDT, with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles an hour. The storm was moving toward the west-northwest at 21 miles an hour, after it made landfall near Atlantic City around 8 p.m..

The weather service reclassified Hurricane Sandy as a posttropical cyclone, which had been expected as the storm moved north and approached the mid-Atlantic states. Tropical cyclones derive energy from warm ocean waters, while posttropical cyclones are fueled by temperature contrasts in the atmosphere.

Strengthening winds and waves swept away a historic pier in Ocean City, Md., Monday and left Atlantic City, N.J., largely submerged - the sea rushing over its iconic boardwalk, surging through the streets, and leaving hundreds of people needing rescue. Up and down the eastern seaboard, hundreds of thousands of homes lost power.

The New York City area was hit hard, with millions were without power. Floodwaters swept through the city as unprecedented surges swelled over banks, sending cars floating down Manhattan streets. Parts of the subway system were expected to be shut down for at least a week. The façade of a Manhattan building was blown off, exposing its innards like a doll house. Callers reported overwhelmed emergency lines, and officials urged people not to call 911 for situations that weren't dire.
