Days after the release of the 'Red Dawn' remake, which swapped the 1982 original's Soviet threat for a modern-day Asian invasion, hateful, fearful and mocking messages have begun popping up on Twitter, the Internet's default channel for off-the-cuff racism and 'did I say that out loud' ignorance.
The grassroots Asian American mediawatch organization Racebending posted a selection of these tweets, and a quick search shows that they've continued to stream in at a steady rate, with posters stating that the movie made them 'suspicious' of Asians, or 'really made me hate [them]…#sorrynotsorry' ─ or worse, expressing the desire to commit violence in retribution for the movie's entirely fictional attack:
'Kinda want to kill some Asians right now and defend the homeland, thank you Red Dawn for sparking some patriotism in me'
'Just saw Red Dawn with the boys…makes me wanna lock-n-load and whoop some Asian Ass'
'Bout to go take over bamboo garden the china in and dragon palace #RED #DAWN'
'Watching red dawn.. Movie is fire!!! F*CK THE CHINKS TRYNA TAKE OVA THE WORLD'
'I wish Red Dawn would happen in real life so I could shoot those chinks coming in by parachute'
In keeping with the blurry ethnicity of the movie's Asian enemy (which was switched from Chinese to North Korean in postproduction), many of the tweets are wide-bore in their reaction, targeting generic 'Asians,' or expansively slamming a buffet of nationalities:
'I now hate all Chinese, Japanses, Asian, Korean people. Thanks.#reddawn #amazingmoviedoe'
'Red Dawn>>>>> any other movie with dawn in it!!! i Have trust issues X10 now against koreans or chinese or whatever'
While no acts of actual violence have been reported due to the movie, this slurry of nasty reactions should still serve as an cautionary alert.
As one observant Tweeter noted, 'Red Dawn' ─ both the original and the remake ─ is dependent on jingoism, paranoia and xenophobia for its appeal. It's designed to make you want to go out and hit someone with a flag; if it doesn't, it's not working for you. And its long-weekend take of around $22 million (according to Hollywood.com) means that it's working for a larger number of people than the critics ─ who've largely savaged the film ─ imagined.
