Internet service went out across Syria on Thursday and international flights to Damascus were suspended amid fighting near the capital's airport, as the U.S. prepared to recognize Syria's resurgent opposition coalition as the country's legitimate leadership.

The developments in Syria are unprecedented in the 20-month uprising that rights groups say has left some 40,000 people dead. The countrywide Internet outage, accompanied by localized outages of mobile and land phone networks, raised fears among some opposition activists that the government is preparing for a major offensive.

The U.S. currently recognizes the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces as a representative of Syria's people. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to use the latest conference of international supporters of Syria's opposition, on Dec. 12 in Morocco, to announce the elevated status, these officials said.

The enhanced status, which would virtually treat the coalition as Syria's government, is expected to help the U.S. more directly channel humanitarian and logistical aid to forces battling President Bashar al-Assad's government on the ground, according to administration officials.

Syria's Internet, which has suffered partial outages before, went dark around noon local time Thursday, according to Renesys, a U.S.-based network security firm that monitors Internet disruptions.
