Rupert Murdoch has unveiled senior management appointments across his media empire as he prepares to split News Corpinto two separate divisions next year.

The reshuffle sees Robert Thomson, managing editor of the Wall Street Journal and a close confidant of Mr Murdoch, take over as chief executive of a new publishing company to be called News Corp, which will incorporate television and digital interests as well as newspapers in the US, UK and Australia.

Mr Murdoch will serve as chairman and chief executive of Fox Group, the new media and entertainment arm. James Murdoch, who is taking an increasingly prominent role in News Corp’s US television interests, will continue as deputy chief operating officer.
