BERLIN, Jan. 2 -- The German interior minister Horst Seehofer on Wednesday has renewed his demands for tightened deportation laws.
Seehofer told the German newspaper Bild that asylum seekers who commit violent crimes would have to leave our country. "If the existing laws are not sufficient, they must be changed."
In mid-December, Seehofer had already announced that he intends to discuss such a proposal for stricter deportation laws for refugees at the beginning of the year.
During Saturday night local time, four asylum seekers from Syria, Afghanistan and Iran allegedly attacked and injured several people in the German city of Amberg.
"The events in Amberg have stirred me up very much. These are violent excesses that we cannot tolerate," Seehofer told Bild on Wednesday.
Rainer Wendt, chairman of the German police union (DPolG), also told Bild that the motive of the four perpetrators in Amberg was "deep contempt for our country and for the people who live here".
According to the newspaper Muenchner Merkur, the CSU parliamentary group wants foreign perpetrators to be arrested consistently if they have already been sentenced on probation in other member states of the European Union.
The CSU demands a Europe-wide registration system, similar to the German federal central register, in which, among other things, court rulings including personal data of culprits are recorded. These demands are to be adopted at a CSU conference in Seeon, Bavaria, on Thursday. Enditem
