  21.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

  A

It’s wonderful to go to another country, complete a volunteer project and feel that you really have a positive influence. But how can you become an international volunteer?

  * Plan practically.Contact the organization a few months before leaving and find out if there are materials which are rare and hard to attain for the project. What you often consider plentiful here, such as nails or hammers,is in great need in other parts of the world.

  * Do the project together, not on your own.You are a guest in the community. The most successful result is not that you build something and walk away, but that you and the community build something as a team.Share skills and build together.

  * Be flexible. Not everything is going to happen as planned.Often the country doesn’t have the right tools, manpower, transportation or funds to get all the needed work done.In a word,it lacks infrastructure(基础设施).

  * Connect with the people in the community.Often you will have downtime outside of the range of the project.Rather than retreat to the group with whom you traveled,be sure to spend time with the people of the community.Listen to the things about their lives. If you can’t speak the language, smiles do wonders. And you will be surprised—you will find a way to communicate!

Volunteering is a special and life-changing experience for everyone involved.Be prepared that the person who may be changed most is you. It’s a joyful experience which will encourage you to view yourself, your neighbors and your world quite differently.

We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(按能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright children. After all,it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!

Besides,it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.

In our classrooms,we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups:this gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate,to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think,to make decisions,to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils work in pairs;sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work:it does not matter what age the child is.We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

  (2017河北唐山统考)

Your cellphone could be a key tool in the fight against diseases by sending a sign of illness to doctors and agencies monitoring new outbreaks.

“It is an early warning system,”says Madan of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, whose team concluded that you can spot cases of flu by looking for changes in the movement and communication patterns of infected people.

Experts know that disease outbreaks change mobility(活动性)patterns, but until now have been unable to track these patterns in any detail. So Madan and his team gave cellphones to 70 students. The phones came with software that supplied the team with necessary data on the students’ movements, phone calls and text messages. The students also completed daily surveys on their mental and physical health.

According to the data gathered over a 10-week period, students with a fever or flu tended to move around less and make fewer calls late at night or early in the morning. When Madan trained the software to hunt for this signature in the cellphone data,a daily check correctly identified 90% of the flu victims.

The technique could be used to monitor the health of those who live alone.Madan is developing a smartphone software that will make a named contact (perhaps a relative or a doctor),when the data suggest that they are ill.

Public health officials could also use the technique to spot some newly emerging outbreaks of illness ahead of traditional detection systems, which today rely on reports from doctors and virus-testing labs.

However, researchers will need to think hard about the causes of the changes they see in the cellphone data, according to Nathan at the University of Warwick,UK.He studied the data from a series of cholera(霍乱)outbreaks in Rwanda between 2006 and 2009 and found a clear drop in people’s movement, which may have been due to the disease. But actually the outbreak was caused by floods, which also limited mobility.“Telling apart the two possible causes on the basis of phone data alone is impossible,”he says.

Sitting for more than three hours a day can decrease a person’s life expectancy(预期寿命) by two years, even if he or she is physically active and gets rid of dangerous habits like smoking, according to a study.Watching TV for more than two hours a day can worsen that problem, decreasing life expectancy by another 1.4 years.

The analysis comes just two years after Australian researchers found that people who said they watched TV for more than four hours a day were 46% more likely to die of any cause than people who said they spent less than two hours a day watching TV.Those watching TV for more than four hours a day were also 80% more likely to die of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease.“Sedentary(久坐的) behavior is something we need to pay attention to,beyond telling people to get 30 minutes of activity a day,”said Peter T.Katzmarzyk, one of the lead researchers. But while the evidence of illnesses is increasing,it remains difficult for many people to find time to get on their feet, especially if they do desk jobs.

“Try to stand as much as you can,”Dr.Katzmarzyk said.“Typically when you’re on the telephone you can stand and use the speakerphone.Instead of emailing someone in the office, just get up and go to talk to them.” However,Dr.Katzmarzyk added, standing shouldn’t be an alternative to exercising, but an alternative to sitting.“Several studies show that when you’re sitting, your leg muscles are completely inactive,”he said.“When you’re sitting and completely inactive, this is when you run into trouble managing blood glucose(血糖).”

  MysteriousEasterIsland

Today, about 5,000 people live on Easter Island, which is located in the Pacific Ocean and is part of the country of Chile.36

The most popular citizens of Easter Island are 800 years old and made of stone. They’re the moai, huge statues that line the shores. They were carved by the island’s natives,The Rapa Nui.

Built using only stone tools, the moai range from 4 to 33 feet tall.37That’s heavier than 50 cars! After the statues were carved, they were moved 11 miles across the island.Yet the Rapa Nui had no horses or cars—or even wheels.38

No one knows for sure.Scientist Jared Diamond thinks the Rapa Nui put the statues on big sleds and rolled them on logs(原木).Archaeologists Carl Lipo and Terry Hunt have a different theory.39Then they rocked them back and forth to move them along.

Rapa Nui legend tells a different story.“We know the truth,”says Suri Tuki,a native of the island.“The statues walked.”

40In 1722,the first Europeans who arrived found that the island was a mess.Forests were destroyed, animals had disappeared, and the moai were toppled over(推倒).Only a few Rapa Nui remained—and they had become cannibals(食人者).What happened?

Only the statues have the answers to the mysteries of Easter Island. And they’re not talking.
