  For several years Chinese have witnessed the growth of luxury brands.

  In this market, Chinese consumers come second in the world, surpassed(超越) only by the Japanese.

  Its clear that a young, materialistic(物质主义的) generation is increasingly relying on luxury brands for their self-image.

  I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit. I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I dont understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels.

  When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months? salary, that?s a scary thing.

  What?s ironic is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn?t lead to happiness.

  Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them, we don?t suddenly become happy people.

  In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, the US, has shown that individuals who invest in travel and other experiences get more pleasure than those who invest in material things. That?s because experiences are more easily integrated(融入) into a persons identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think.

  My memories become part of me.

  Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who seek happiness through things are liked less by their peers than young people who pursue happiness through experiences.

  It?s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is, create a look that isn?t tied to a designer label.

  Convey your own message. Take some lessons from Apple founder Steve Jobs, who was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, who routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers.

  These people, successful people, have style. You don?t have to break the bank to send a message about who you are.

  Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.

  1. What can we know from the first paragraph?

  A. Chinese consumers are the first in consuming luxuries.

  B. Japanese consumers are the first in consuming luxuries.

  C. All Chinese like luxury brands.

  D. The Chinese consumers are to surpass the Japanese in luxury market.

  2. Which of the following statements is TURE according to the passage?

  A. Scientists have found that happiness doesn’t result from

  having luxuries. B. Studies have shown that when we get material things,

  we become happy people.

  C. Individuals who invest in travel and other experiences get less pleasure than those who invest in material things.

  D. Those successful people break the bank to send a message about who they are.

  3. According to Van Boven’s observations, we can learn that________.

  A. young people’s peers like young people who pursue happiness through things

  B. young people’s peers like young people who pursue

  happiness through experiences

  C. young people are likely to pursue happiness through things

  D. young people are likely to pursue happiness through experiences

  4. What’s the author’s attitude toward people pursing luxuries?

  A. Disapproving. B. Favorable.

  C.

  Non-committal(含糊的).

  D. Neutral.

从文章第一段的“In this market,Chinese consumers come second in the world, surpassed(超越)only by

  the Japanese.”

从文章第五段的“scientists have found that having luxury things doesnt lead to happiness”可知答案。

  1. 解释这两个词的区别;

  2. 介绍“淘课”现在很受学生欢迎;

  注意:1. 词数为100左右;

  2. 参考释义:逃课——be absent from some lectures;

  淘课——search for some lectures;

  3. 除以上两个词语外,邮件中不得使用其他汉字或拼音;

  Hi_Jim,

  Nice to read your email today. I notice you’ve begun to pay much attention to Chinese learning.

  I found you are confused to the two words“逃课”and“淘课”. The former means being absent from some lectures that you need to attend and the latter means searching for some favorite lectures after class so that you can get more knowledge you want to know.

  Nowadays, with many famous American universities giving their online lectures on the Internet, “淘课” is becoming more and more popular in China. Many students can have the chance to attend their favorite lectures given by the worldfamous professors in their spare time. Besides, some whitecollars don’t need to take some extra courses as usual. Instead, they can search for some useful online lectures to study, which can help to improve themselves.

  Hope my explanations can help you and that you will make more progress in Chinese study.

  Yours,

  Li Ming
