  Module4 Which English?

  A

Sex prejudices are based on and justified by the ideology(意识形态) that biology is destiny.According to this ideology, basic biological and psychological differences exist between the sexes. These differences require each sex to play a separate role in social life.Women are the weaker sex both physically and emotionally. Thus, they are naturally suited, much more so than men,to the performance of domestic (家庭的) duties.A woman's place, under normal circumstances,is within the protective environment of the home.Nature has determined that women play caretaker roles, such as wife and mother and homemaker. On the other hand, men are best suited to go out into the competitive world of work and politics, where serious responsibilities must be taken on.Men are to be the providers;women and children are “dependents”.

The ideology also holds that women who wish to work outside the household should naturally fill these jobs that are in line with the special capabilities of their sex.It is appropriate for women, not men,to be employed as nurses, social workers, elementary school teachers,house-hold helpers, clerks and secretaries. These positions are simply an extension of women's domestic role.Informal distinctions between “women's work” and “men's work” in the labor force, according to the ideology, are simply a functional reflection of the basic differences between the sexes.

Finally, the ideology suggests that nature has worked her will in another significant way.For the human species to survive over time, its members must regularly reproduce. Thus, women must, whether at home or in the labor force, make the most of their physical appearances.

So goes the ideology. It is,of course, not true that basic biological and psychological differences between the sexes require each to play sex-defined roles in social life. There is enough evidence that sex roles vary from society to society, and those_role_differences_that_do_exist_are_largely_learned.

But to the degree people who actually believe that biology is destiny and that nature intends for men and women to make different contributions to society,sex-defined roles will be seen as totally acceptable.

  1.According to the biology-is-destiny ideology,women________.

A.cannot compete with men in any field

B.are suited more to domestic jobs than men

C.are sensitive enough to be a good caretaker

D.are too weak to do any agricultural work at all

根据第一段中的“Women are the weaker sex both physically and...of domestic(家庭的)duties.”

2.Those who have prejudices against women think that________.

A.women shouldn't go out for work

B.women should earn money to add the family income

C.women going out for work should only do “women's work”

D.women should take jobs to drill the special capabilities of the sex

根据第二段的第一句“The ideology also holds that...capabilities of their sex.”

3.The author thinks that the positions women hold outside________.

A.are determined by what they are better suited to

B.grow out of their household responsibilities

C.represent their breakthrough of sex discrimination

D.are physically and emotionally suitable to them

根据第二段中的“These positions are simply an extension of women's domestic role.”

4.What does the underlined sentence imply?

  A.Sex roles are socially determined.

B.Sex roles are emotionally and physically determined.

C.Sex roles are biologically and psychologically determined.

D.Sex roles are determined by people's share of the take.

  解析:选A。

  B

They can be damp and cold. But with a growing number of men seeing the shed as a home from home, research claims the solitude (独处)it provides at the bottom of the garden could actually be good for their health.

A study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that the peaceful retreat (退隐)may help lower blood pressure. Its author,Professor Alan White of Leeds Metropolitan University, claims the hours spent pottering (闲逛) about in sheds doing odd jobs also have a positive effect on men's self-esteem. “Men find doing things relaxing and that in itself is good for their health,” he said.“There's a sense of achievement that men get from starting a task to seeing it completed.Men know what a shed means and they feel comfortable.”

Such has been the growth in its popularity that communal (共享的) sheds are being set up to enable men to share their love of pottering and DIY. The “Men's Sheds” initiative has its roots in Australia. But 20 communal sheds have already sprung up in the UK from the Lake District to Greenwich. Peter Baker, chief executive of the Men's Health Forum,a charity involved in the scheme, said,“They've caught men's imagination.Men like to potter.”

There are approximately 11.5 million domestic sheds in Britain—a higher concentration than anywhere else in the world—and 1.5 million are sold every year.Furthermore,Britons spend more than 60 million hours a week in them.

Originating from the Anglo-Saxon word “scead”,meaning shade, the peaceful retreat remains a place for the lawnmower and potting bench but has also been transformed into a games room and even a mini pub.

  5.Communal sheds are popular because________.

A.men can share their love of pottering and DIY there

B.men can keep away from other family members there

C.men can stay there for the good of their health

D.men can complete an important task there

  解析:选A。

6.Garden sheds can lower men's blood pressure because________.

A.they give men a sense of achievement

B.they offer men the peaceful retreat

C.they offer men a place to do odd jobs

D.they give men a place to do things without disturbing

7.Which of the following is NOT true about garden sheds?

A.Men will feel relaxed in them.

B.Men will feel lonely staying in them.

  C.They can benefit men physically.

D.They can help raise men's confidence.

8.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

  A.The popularity of garden sheds

B.The new use of garden sheds

  C.How to build garden sheds

  D.Garden sheds improve men's health
