  A

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺骗)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.

For example, someone might say,“I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!” This guy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser! He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's

  called

  a

  halftruth.

  Halftruths

  are

not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some politicians often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says, “ During Governor Smith's term, the state lost

  one

  million jobs!”

  That's

true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”

Advertisers will sometimes use halftruths. It's against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.

This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life:lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

1.We may infer that the author believes people should

  .

  A. buy lottery tickets if possible

  B. make use of halftruths

  C. be careful about what they are told

  D. not trust the Yucky Company

2.How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to deceive?

  A. One.

  B.Two.

  C. Three. D. Four.

3.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

  A. Using halftruths is against the law.

  B. Technically, halftruths are in fact lies.

  C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.

  D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.

根据文章第三段中的“her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs”可知,在她上届任期中,她所在的州失去了100万份工作,同时获得了300万份工作,这样看来实际上她是成功的。

4.Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?

  A. He's really a big loser!

  B. Sometimes the truth can lie as well.

  C. Advertisers will sometimes use halftruths.

  D. It's against the law to make false statements.

  B

Zoe Chambers was a successful PR (Public Relations) consultant and life was going well—she had a great job, a beautiful flat and a busy social life in London. Then one evening in June last year, she received a text message telling her she was out of work.

“The first two weeks were the most difficult to live through,”

she said. “After everything I'd done for the company, they dismissed me by text! I was so angry and I just didn't feel like looking for another job. I hated everything about the city and my life.”

Then, Zoe received an invitation from an old school friend, Kathy, to come and stay.

Kathy and her husband, Huw, had just bought a farm in northwest Wales. Zoe jumped at the chance to spend a weekend away from London, and now, ten months later, she is still on the farm.

“The moment I arrived at Kathy's farm, I loved it and I knew I wanted to stay,” said Zoe. “Everything about my past life suddenly seemed meaningless.”

Zoe has been working on the farm since October of last year and says she has no regrets.

“It's a hard life, physically very tiring,” she says.

“In London I was stressed and often mentally exhausted.

But this is a good, healthy tiredness. Here, all I need to put me in a good mood is a hot bath and one of Kathy's wonderful dinners.”

Zoe says she has never felt bored on the farm. Every day brings a new experience. Kathy has been teaching her how to ride a horse and she has learnt to drive a tractor.

Since Christmas, she has been helping with the lambing—watching a lamb being born is unbelievable. She says,

“It's one of the most moving experiences I've ever had. I could never go back to city life now.”

5.According to the author, Zoe lived a

life as a PR consultant in London.

  A. boring

  C. tough D. satisfying

根据第一段第一句中的“life was going well”可知,选D。

6.How does Zoe feel about the country life according to the passage?

  A. Tiresome and troublesome. B. Romantic and peaceful.

  C. Mentally exhausting but healthy.

  D. Physically tiring but rewarding.

根据第四段中Zoe说的“physically very tiring”以及“But this is a good, healthy tiredness”可知,选D。

7.It is stated in the passage that

  .

  A. Zoe went to the farm to start a new life

  B. Zoe failed to find another job in London

  C. Kathy was Zoe's friend from work

  D. watching a lamb being born touched Zoe's heart

根据文章最后一段中的“watching a lamb being born is unbelievable”以及“It's one of the most moving experiences I've ever had”可知,这种经历震撼了Zoe的内心。

8.Which of the following is closest to the main idea of the passage?

  A. Kill two birds with one stone.

  B. A misfortune may turn out a blessing.

  C. Where there is a will, there is a way.

  D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
