(2017·长沙高三联考)How to improve my life? Many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. They’ll say,“This is my fate,my destiny.I cannot change it.”

Of course not!You don’t have to suffer needlessly.Your destiny depends on you,not on any other external factors.

I know someone who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it.Guess what her lifestyle is? She wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes back home, relaxes, chats with people, watches TV,then goes to sleep.Next day,the same routine cycle follows.

Huh!Is this what she calls“doing her best”?She believes she has tried her best and just accepts it in her heart that this is the life that God has intended for her to live;that her luck can only change if God wills it.Of course God wants us to be happy and live our life to the fullest, but we have to do our share of exerting(运用) the effort to live the life of our dreams.

Remember that you reap what you sow.You just don’t sit around and wait for a million dollars to fall from the sky.You have to get off the couch, get your eyes off the TV screen, get your hands off the phone.Don’t expect your luck to change unless you do something about it.If something goes wrong, don’t just regard it as a temporary setback;but use it as feedback.Learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. It’s not enough to think positively;you also have to act positively.

If someone’s life is in the trouble,do you just hope and pray that things will turn out fine? Of course not! You get to do anything you can to save the person. So it is with your own life.It is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best.In other words, don’t just stand(or sit)there,do something to improve your life.

A year later I started playing basketball at my local recreation center. It was very big.I never thought in my wildest dreams that a basketball court could be inside a building. The recreation center had a special smell in it,sort of like hot rubber.I guessed it was from the shoes hitting the floor so fast and hard. The atmosphere on the court was carefree. Our biggest excitement of the day was when we actually made a shot.We celebrated wins over ice cream at a fast food restaurant.

I got good at it,and my confidence grew.I played it all the time until the sixth grade. As soon as junior high school came,I stopped playing basketball and focused on school. When senior high school started,I tried out for the school team and made it.We worked hard.Every week we did 300 push-ups and 300 sit-ups on our own.Our coach encouraged the sit-ups to keep stomach power, because it gave us so much control when we were playing basketball. If we didn’t want to do the sit-ups and push-ups,we could practice dribbling (运球) and shooting more. It’s just us,the ball, the court and the net.But don’t take my word for it.See for yourself. After all,I’m just one kid playing the game.

(2017·邵阳二中高三月考)Many factors contribute to a deaf or hard-of-hearing person’s ability to communicate: degree of hearing loss, type of hearing loss, age, individual, environmental factors.

Every deaf and hard-of-hearing person is unique.Eye contact and facial expressions are very important in Deaf Culture. If you look at the deaf or hard-of-hearing person while talking,he will feel you’re interested in what he is saying. Also,he needs to be watching your face or body language in order to fully understand what you’re saying.

Speak normally.Slow down a little bit and separate your words.Exaggerated(夸张的) mouth movements will not improve the person’s ability to understand you.

Keep your mouth free from barriers, such as long beards,pens,pencils,cigarettes,hands,etc..Look directly at the deaf or hard-of-hearing person when communicating with him.Don’t turn away from him while you are in mid-sentence.

For most deaf and hard-of-hearing persons,it is much easier to communicate on a one-to-one level rather than in a group situation.Be aware of background noises, lighting, and visual obstacles that are barriers to understanding.

Do not shout. In most cases, shouting simply doesn’t work and makes you look foolish.

Establish eye contact and watch the person’s expressions. If the deaf or hard-of-hearing person shows signs of being confused, ask if he can understand.

  Ⅵ.阅读简答

(2017·衡阳模拟)As a young man, Al was a skilled artist, a potter. He had a wife and two fine sons.

One night, his elder son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal(肠的)disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the disease was actually acute appendicitis(急性阑尾炎), and the boy died suddenly that night. Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, Al’s emotional health declined under the enormous burden of his guilt. To make matters worse his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son.

The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could handle, and he became an alcoholic. As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed—his home, his land, his art objects, everything. Eventually Al died alone in a San Francisco hotel room.

When I heard of Al’s death, I thought, “What a complete failure!” “What a totally wasted life.”As time went by, I began to re-evaluate my earlier harsh judgment. You see, I knew Al’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere. I hadn’t heard Ernie talk much about his father.

One day I worked up my courage to ask him. “I’m really puzzled by something,”I said. “I know your father was basically the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do so that you became such a special person?” Ernie sat quietly and reflected for a few moments. Then he said, “From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said,‘I love you, son.’”

Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind, but he had been a kind loving father, and he left behind one of the finest, most giving man I have ever known.
