A. Be a fly on the wall
B. Share quality family time
C. Use everyday opportunities to talk
D. Tell stories about yourself growing up
E. Provide no-pressure conversation opportunities
F. Ask a child what he thinks instead of telling him what you think
Seemingly overnight, your kids who previously were never quiet suddenly have nothing to say. To you, anyway. If your child has gone from a continuous chat to conversations that consist mostly of yes and no responses or even worse, it’s time for some prevention. Consider the following parenting tips on how to talk to kids in a way that will keep the lines of communication open so you’ll know what’s going on in your child’s world. How can you talk to kids to keep communication and conversation flowing?
1.
The quickest way to get kids to shut down and, as a result, shut you out of their lives is to continuously quiz them about things. A more effective approach is to sit back and patiently wait for them to open up in a low-stress family setting, and then be prepared to listen. If you really want to know what’s on your child’s mind, then avoid passing judgment and focus instead on why something seems important to your child.
2.
You want to raise a creative and independent thinker. Right? So stop telling your child what he ought to feel or think. You can gently encourage additional conversation by simply asking why he feels like the way he does or what he would do in a certain situation. But be careful not to overdo it when talking with your child. You may think you’re just asking questions out of curiosity when communicating with your child, but a child who is hit with an endless stream of questions about what he did, who acted like what, did everyone get along, did you go to the bathroom, etc. , is enough to make anyone shut down! Practice patience and let your kids open up on their terms.
3.
Have you ever noticed how your kids think you are not there when you’re driving them somewhere in the car or just hanging out? Sometimes, you can learn more about what your kids think or feel when they are telling their friends about something. Don’t do anything but listen, and then ask them about things later in an unconcerned manner fashion.
4.
Kids can relate to you and other adults when you tell stories about your own childhood experiences when you were their age. Talking to kids by telling them about things like something embarrassing that happened or the first love you had helps them to connect with you and understand that you might actually know what they are going through!
5.
Find ways to connect with your kids through communications in activities that are fun for you both. Whether it is taking the dog for a nightly walk after dinner, swimming in the backyard pool, playing a ball game, or watching a favorite show together, planning low-stress activities and family fun together help set the stage for great conversation.

A. Beijing had its heaviest traffic jam.
B. Measures are taken to solve the problem.
C. Moon cakes sell well.
D. Moon cakes made with gold and silver are expensive.
E. Big cities are suffering heavy traffic.
F. People are busy developing their “guanxi” on festivals.
1.
In a society that strongly stresses “guanxi (connections) ”, festivals provide the best chance to develop and maintain relationships through giving gifts, but they also contribute to corruption (腐败) . The worst traffic jam Beijing has suffered in a year has once again focused people’s attention on “holiday corruption”.
2.
The capital suffered the heaviest traffic jam of the year on Tuesday, with rain making the situation worse. As the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holidays approach, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transportation warned on Monday that traffic jam in the capital will reach its peak this week.
3.
Beijing, other big cities such as Shanghai and Guangzhou, and also major cities that are political and business centres, are also suffering heavy traffic before the holiday. Traffic jams are already a daily problem in some cities, due to increasing numbers of cars and poor road design. However, people driving across cities with gifts aimed at boosting their “guanxi” is worsening the situation.
4.
It’s also reported that moon cakes made with gold and silver are selling well these days. One salesperson told the reporter that the gold moon cakes, priced at 47, 620 yuan and silver ones at a price of 850 yuan per package, are favored by many companies.
5.
Efforts to stop holiday corruption have been promoted for many years. Some local governments have even issued bans on expensive cigarettes or alcohol. While some also forbid civil servants from accepting “gifts” and attending social banquets before holidays.
