Nothing was going right for Dr. Turner at the hospital. He made a mistake while operating on a patient. He felt sure he was no longer trusted and decided to change his job. One day he learned from the paper that a doctor was looking for a partner(合作者). The doctor, whose name was Johnson, lived in Thorby, a small town in the north of England.

A few days later Dr. Turner went to Thorby, and arrived at Dr. Johnson's home early in the afternoon. Though old and a little deaf, Dr. Johnson still had a good brain. He kept talking to the visitor about the town and its people. When they turned to the question of partnership, it was already seven in the evening. Dr. Johnson invited Dr. Turner to have dinner with him in a restaurant before catching the train back to London. Dr. Turner noticed that Dr. Johnson was fond of good food and expensive wines. They had an excellent meal. When the bill was brought, Dr Johnson felt in his pocket. "Oh ,dear," he said. "I've forgotten my money." "That's all right," Dr. Turner said. "I'll pay the bill." As he

A new study has found no evidence that sunscreen, commonly used to reduce the risk of skin caner, actually increases the risk.

Researchers from the University of lows based their firdings on a review of 18 earlier studies that looked at the associstion between sunscreen use and melanoms(黑素瘤). They said that they found flaws in studies that had reported associations between sunscreen use and higher risk of melanoma.

Most health experts believe that by protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, sunscreen helpsprevent skin cancer, which is increasing in incidence (发生率) faster than any other cancer in the United States.

But questions have been raised about sunscreen and whether it may have the opposite effect, perhaps by allowing people to remain exposed to the sun longer without burning.

The researchers said that among the problems with some earlier studies is that they often failed to take into account that those people most at risk for skin concer—people with fair skin and freckles (雀斑),for example—are more likely to use sunscreen. As a result, it may appear that sunscreen users get cancer more often.

I had just gone to bed after a very hard day when the phone rang. It was an eccentric(怪癖的)farmer. I had never met him before although I had often heard people talk about him. He sounded quite nervous and he had been talking for a minute or so before I understood anything. Even then all I could make out was that someone called Milly had had a very bad accident. I hadn't the slightest idea who she was but I obviously had to go.

It had been snowing heavily that day and I didn't know the way. I had been driving for at least an hour when I finally found his place. He was standing there, waiting for me. It seemed Milly had died. "She meant more to me than anyone?even my ownI wife !" he said. I could see that he had been crying. I thought something terrible had taken place, a possible scandal(丑闻). I was even more shocked when he told me he had put her in the barn (厩). "I wouldn't leave her out in the cold!" he said.

Milly had clearly been a secret lover of his. I was about to tell him he could not expect me to cover anything up when he opened the barn door. C(2017湖北卷)

We’ve reached a strange—some would say unusual—point. While fighting world hunger continues to be the matter of vital importance according to a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO), more people now die from being overweight, or say, from being extremely fat, than from being underweight. It’s the good life that’s more likely to kill us these days.

Worse, nearly l8 million children under the age of five around the world are estimated to be overweight. What’s going on?

We really don’t have many excuses for our weight problems. The dangers of the problem have been drilled into us by public-health campaigns since 2001 and the message is getting through—up to a point.

In the 1970s, Finland, for example, had the highest rate of heart disease in the world and being overweight was its main cause. Not any more. A public-health campaign has greatly reduced the number of heart disease deaths by 80 per cent over the past three decades.

Maybe that explains why the percentage of people in Finland taking diet pills doubled between 2001 and 2005, and doctors even offer surgery of removing fat inside and change the shape of the body. That has become a sort of fashion. No wonder it ranks as the world’s most body-conscious country.

We know what we should be doing to lose weight—but actually doing it is another matter. By far the most popular excuse is not taking enough exercise. More than half of us admit we lack willpower.

Others blame good food. They say: it’s just too inviting and it makes them overeat. Still others lay the blame on the Americans, complaining that pounds have piled on thanks to eating too much American-style fast food.

Some also blame their parents—their genes. But unfortunately, the parents are wronged because they’re normal in shape, or rather slim.

It’s a similar story around the world, although people are relatively unlikely to have tried to lose weight. Parents are eager to see their kids shape up. Do as I say—not as I do.

  59. What is the “strange” point mentioned in the first sentence?

  A. The good life is a greater risk than the bad life.

  B. Starvation is taking more people’s lives in the world.

  C. WHO report shows people’s unawareness of food safety.

  D. Overweight issue remains unresolved despite WHO’s efforts.

  60. Why does the author think that people have no excuse for being overweight?

  A. A lot of effective diet pills are available.

  B. Body image has nothing to do with good food.

  C. They have been made fully aware of its dangers.

  D. There are too many overweight people in the world.

  61. The example of Finland is used to illustrate ______.

  A. the cause of heart disease

  B. the fashion of body shaping

  C. the effectiveness of a campaign

  D. the history of a body-conscious country

  62. Which would be the best title for the passage?

  A. Actions or Excuses?

  B. Overweight or Underweight?

  C. WHO in a Dilemma

  D. No Longer Dying of Hunger

【答案解析】C【文章大意】词义推断题。【解析】由第“…more people now die from being overweight, or say, from being extremely fat, than from being underweight.
