  77.

NIDA views medications as a powerful force for good in the contemporary world. They reduce and remove pain for millions of people suffering from illness and disease. They make it possible for doctors to perform complicated surgery to save lives. Many people afflicted by serious medical conditions are able to control their symptoms and become active, contributing citizens. NIDA points out that most individuals who take these drags use them in a responsible.

Nevertheless, overuse of drugs such as opioids, central nervous system (CNS) depressants and stimulants does lead to harmful reliance in some people and is therefore becoming a serious public health concern. Although this abuse affects many people worldwide, particular trends of concern to the medical profession in the US appear among older adults, teenagers arid women.

Though it may be a surprise to many, the misuse of medications may be the most common form of drug abuse among the elderly. Dr Kenneth Schrader of Duke University, North Carolina states that although the elderly represent about 13% of the US population, those aged 65 and over account for the consumption of one third of all drugs. People in this age group use medications roughly three times more than the general population and have poorer compliance with instruction for use. In another study of elderly patients admitted to treatment programs, 70% were women who had overused medicines.

The Man of Many Secrets — Harry Houdini — was one of the greatest American entertainers in the theater this century. He was a man famous for his escapes — from prison cells, from wooden boxes floating in rivers, from locked tanks full of water. He appeared in theaters all over Europe and America. Crowds came to see the great Houdini and his “magic” tricks.

Of course, his secret was not magic, or supernatural powers. It was simply strength. He had the ability to move his toes as well as he moved his fingers. He could move his body into almost any position he wanted.

Houdini started working in the entertainment world when he was 17, in 1891. He and his brother Theo performed card tricks in club in New York. They called themselves the Houdini Brothers. When Harry married in 1894, he and his wife Bess worked together as magician and assistant. But for a long time they were not very successful. Then Harry performed his first prison escape, in Chicago in 1898. Harry persuaded a detective to let him try to escape from the prison, and he invited the local newspapermen to watch.

It was the publicity(宣传) that came from this that started Harry Houdini’s success. Harry had fingers trained to escape from handcuffs and toes trained to escape ankle chins. But his biggest secret

was how he unlocked the prison doors. Every time he went into the prison cell, Bess gave him a kiss for good luck — and a small skeleton key, which is a key that fits many locks, pass quickly from her mouth to his.

Harry used these prison escapes to build his fame. He arranged to escape from the local prison of every town he visited. In the afternoon, the people of the town would read about it in their local newspapers, and in the evening every seat in the local theater would be full. What was the result? World-wide fame and a name remembered today.

  49. According to the passage, Houdini’s success in prison escapes depends on _______.

  A. his special tricks and supernatural powers

  B. his unusual ability and a skeleton key

  C. his magic tricks and inhuman powers

  D. his wisdom and magic tricks

  50. In the fourth paragraph, the underlined word “this” refers to _______.

  A. his first prison escape

  B. the year 1898

  C. the publicity

  D. Harry Houdini’s success

  51. It can be inferred from the passage that Houdini became famous _______.

  A. in 1894

  B. before he married

  C. at the age of 17

  D. when he was about 24

  52. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

  A. A Skeleton Key

  B. A Man of Many Secrets

  C. World-wild Fame

  D. Great Escape

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect (影响) American society in many ways---education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society--- one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior (行为) is suitable (合适) at various ages.

A person's age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There's no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn't as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.

Many people say, 'I am much younger than my mother---or my father---was at my age.' No one says .'Act your age ' anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

  1. It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America_________.

  A. has made people feel younger

  B. has changed people's social position

  C. has changed people's understanding of age

  D. has slowed down the country's social development

  2. The underlined word 'one' refers to _____.

  A. a society

  B. America

  C. a place

  D. population

  3. 'Act your age' means people should _____.

  A. be active when they are old

  B. do the right thing at the right age

  C. show respect for their parents young or old

  D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age

4.If 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm. the writer of the text would most

  probably consider it ______.

  A. normal

  B. wonderful

  C. unbelievable

  D. unreasonable .
