  三、阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

  A

I'm a pig,and my son is a rabbit. I have snakes for daughters, and my wife, believe it or not,is a dragon!Do I live in a zoo? No,of course not!I am talking about Chinese zodiac signs(十二生肖).Depending on the year of your birth, each person has an animal for a sign. That's why I am a pig and my wife is a dragon. If you, like me,were born in the year of the pig, then you are brave, thoughtful and loyal. The year of the pig is filled with good fortune.

Now let's take a closer look at this interesting animal.

Pigs were first raised by man about 9,000 years ago,and are still a very common farm animal in many parts of the world. We don't just use pigs for their meat—almost every part of the animal is used. The hair is used for artists' brushes. The fat is used to make floor wax, rubber and plastics.

Pigs have also been important in the world of entertainment. In 1995 the film Babe starred a loveable talking pig as its main character. The film won an Oscar and was nominated(提名)for 6 more. In England you can even go to watch pig racing. A farmer,Rob Shepherd, has been raising money for charity by holding pig races on his farm. The events have been very successful. People don't just want to eat pigs,it seems!

Pigs also play an important role in the English language. For example,if someone says that he will travel to the sun one day,you can say “Pigs_might_fly!” to him. Hungry?Well then, you can “pig out” and eat

lots of food. And what if someone rescues you?Well, you can say that they “saved your bacon”.

36.The writer wrote the first paragraph in a ________ tone.

  A.sad

  B.confused

  C.serious

  D.humorous

  答案 D [推理判断题。文章第一段,作者用属相称呼来介绍自己及他的家人,很幽默,很吸引读者。]

37.We may know from the passage that ________.

A.people in England like pigs more than other animals

B.pigs are more useful than ordinary people imagine

C.pigs are the first animals raised by man

D.more people don't want to eat pigs now

  答案 B [细节理解题。根据第三段后三句,第四段第一句及第五段第一句可知:猪的用途要比普通人想象得多。故选B。]

38.The underlined sentence “Pigs might fly!”in the fifth paragraph means “____”.

A.What you have just said is impossible

  B.Pigs are great animals

  C.I don't understand your words

D.I can't agree with you more

答案 A [细节理解题。根据前半句提示if someone says that he will travel to the sun one day,you can say“Pigs might fly!”可知:如果有人说有一天他将去太阳旅行,你会说“那是不可能的”。“Pigs might fly!”的字面意思:猪在空中飞;比喻义:你说的事绝对不可能发生。]

39.Which diagram shows the structure(结构)of the passage?

  答案 C [细节理解题。文章三、四和五段都是说明猪的用途,因此它们并列在一起。第一段作者幽默地介绍自己及家人。第二段承上启下,引出下文对猪的用途的描述。故选C。]

  B

Do you know how one might feel if he or she cheated on a school test?

I cheated on a unit test in math class this morning during the second period with Mr. Burke. Afterward,I was too sick to eat lunch just thinking about it.

I came straight home from school, went to my room, and lay on the floor trying to decide whether it would be better to run away from home now or after supper. Mostly I wished I was dead. It wasn't even an accident that I cheated.

Yesterday Mr. Burke announced there'd be a unit test and anyone who didn't pass would have to come to school on Saturday, most particularly me,since I didn't pass the last unit test. He said that right out in front of everyone as usual.

The night before the test I was fully occupied and disturbed a lot by my family. It was not until nine o'clock that I began to study, which was too late for the unit test so I lay in my bed with the light off and decided what I would do the next day when I was in Mr. Burke's math class.

So,you see,the cheating was planned after all.

I'd go into class jolly as usual, acting like things were going just great, and no one,not even Mr. Burke, would suspect the truth. I'd sit down next to Stanley Plummer—he is so smart in math that it makes you sick—and from time to time,I'd glance over at his paper to copy the answers. And that's exactly what I did this morning. Everything was okay except that my stomach was upside down and I wanted to die.

The fact is,I couldn't believe what I'd done in cold blood. I began to wonder about myself—really wonder—things like whether I would steal from stores or hurt someone on purpose or do some other terrible things I couldn't even imagine. I began to wonder whether I was plain bad to the soul.

Now all of a sudden I've turned into this criminal. It's hard to believe I'm just a boy. And all because of one stupid math test.

Lying on the floor of my room,I begin to think that probably I'd been bad all along. It just took this math test to clinch it. I'll probably never tell the truth again.

I tell my mother I'm sick when she calls me to come down for dinner. She doesn't believe me,but puts me to bed anyhow. I lie there in the early winter darkness wondering what terrible thing I'll be doing next when my father comes in and sits down on my bed.

  “What's the matter?”he asks.

“I've got a stomachache,”I say. Luckily,it's too dark to see his face.

  “Is that all?”

  “Yeah. ”

“Mommy says you've been in your room since school. ”

“I was sick there too,”I say.

“She thinks something happened today and you're upset. ”

That's the thing that really drives me crazy about my mother. She_knows_things_sitting_inside_my_head_as_if_I_was_turned_inside_out.

“Well,”my father says. I can tell he doesn't believe me.

“My stomach is feeling sort of upset. ”I add.

“Okay,”he says and he pats my leg and gets up. Just as he shuts the door of my room I call out to him in a voice I don't even recognize as my own that I'm going to have to run away.

“How come?”he calls back not surprised or anything.

So I tell him I cheated on this math test. To tell the truth,I'm pretty much surprised at myself. I didn't plan to tell him anything.

He doesn't say anything at first and that almost kills me. I'd be fine if he'd scold me or something. To say nothing can drive a person crazy.

And then he says I'll have to call Mr. Burke.

It's not what I had in mind.

  “Now?”I ask in surprise.

“Now,”he says. He turns on the light and pulls off my covers.

  “I'm not going to,”I say.

But I do it. I call Mr. Burke, probably waking him up,and I tell him exactly what happened, even that I decided to cheat the night before the test. He says I'll come in Saturday to take another test, which is okay with me,and I thank him a whole lot for being understanding and all. He's not friendly but he's not absolutely mean either.

“Today I thought I was turning into a criminal,”I tell my father when he turns out my light.

Sometimes my father kisses me good night and sometimes he doesn't. I never know. But tonight he does.

I was born in Tuckahoe,Talbot Country,Maryland. I have no accurate(准确的)knowledge of my age, never having seen any record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant(不知情的).I do not remember having ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. They seldom come nearer to it than plantingtime, harvesting, springtime,or falltime. A lack of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages, but I could not tell. Why the same right ought to be taken away from me!I was not allowed to ask my master about it. He considered all such questions on the part of a slave improper and impolite. The nearest estimate(估计)I can live makes me now between twentyseven and twentyeight years of age. I come to this, from hearing my master say, some time during 1835,I was about seventeen years old. My mother was named Harriet Bailey. She was the daughter of Isaac and Betsey Bailey, both colored, and quite dark.

My father was a white man. The opinion was also whispered that my master was my father;but of the correctness of this opinion,I know nothing and I have no means to know. My mother and I were separated when I was but an infant—before I knew her as my mother. It is a common custom,in the part of Maryland from which I ran away,to part children from their mothers at a very early age. Frequently, before the child has reached its twelfth month, its mother is taken from it,and hired out on some farm a considerable distance off,and the child is placed under the care of an older woman, too old for field labor.

If a husband accuses his wife of missing the bigger picture or the wife says her husband has no eye for detail, there may be more than an element of truth to it.

Scientists have shown that men are better at dealing with distant targets, while women are good at shortrange focusing.

The finding reflects the way men and women's brains evolved(进化)thousands of years ago. Hunters, usually the men, needed the ability to find targets in far places. Women,on the other hand, had to be_adept_in searching the area immediately within reach for fruits, nuts, berries and roots.

Researchers asked 48 men and women to mark the midpoint of lines on a piece of paper with a laser pointer. Men were more accurate(准确的)than women when the target was placed at a distance of 100cm or out of reach. When the paper was only 50cm away—within hands' reach—the women did a much better job.

Psychologist Helen Stancey, from Hammersmith and West London College, said,“Evidence already exists that separate pathways in the brain process visual information from near and far space. Our results suggest that the near pathways is favored in women and the far pathway is favored in men. ”The findings are published online in the British Journal of Psychology.

In a second study, volunteers were asked to carry out the same tasks by using a stick. This time women were much better than men at judging both distances. The finding suggests that the stick provides a focal point(集中点)to help the brain to process distant information as if it is in the near space.

“I'm delighted and amazed at how much media recognition that the Pulitzer brings,as compared to even the National Book Critics Award, which I was also surprised and delighted to win,”said Armantrout.

“For a long time,my writing has been just below the media radar, and to have this kind of attention; suddenly, with my 10th book,is really surprising. ”

Armantrout,a native Californian, received her bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, where she studied with noted poet Denise Levertov, and her master's in creative writing from San Francisco State University. She is a founding member of Language Poets,a group in American poetry that analyzes the way language is used and raises questions to make the reader think.

In March, she won the National Book Critics Award for “Versed. ”

“This book has gotten more attention,”Armantrout said,“but I don't feel as if it's better. ”

The first half of “Versed” focuses on the dark forces taking hold of the United States as it fought the war against Iraq. The second half looks at the dark forces casting a shadow over her own life after Armantrout was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.

Armantrout was shocked to learn she had won the Pulitzer but many of her colleagues were not. “Rae Armantrout is a unique voice in American poetry,”said Seth Lerer, head of Arts and Humanities at UCSD.

“Versed,”published by the Wesleyan University Press, did appear in a larger printing than her earlier works, which is about 2,700 copies. The new edition is scheduled to appear in May.

_burdened_ourselves_with_a_lot_of_work. To make ourselves enjoy a colorful life out of our daily study,we've decided to found a cycling club and organize some outdoor activities.

We plan to offer basic training once every week, which will be instructed by one of our PE teachers. It will fall on every Wednesday after the day's work is over. And at the last weekends of each month,an outdoor cycling trip will be organized.

It is desired that you can take time to join our club,as it is a great way to keep fit and a good chance to relax ourselves from our study. What needs to be specifically noted is that the activity is free of charge, but you should bring your bicycle along.

Those who have interest can go to the monitor and sign up.

  That's_all. Thank_you.
