If you were to walk up to Arthur Bonner and say, “Hey, Butterfly Man,” his face would break into a smile. The title suits him. And he loves it.

Arthur Bonner works with the Palos Verdes blue butterfly, once thought to have died out. Today the butterfly is coming back — thanks to him. But years ago if you'd told him this was what he'd be doing someday, he would have laughed, “You're crazy.” As a boy, he used to be “a little tough guy on the streets”. At age thirteen, he was caught by police stealing. At eighteen, he landed in prison for shooting a man.

“I knew it had hurt my mom,” Bonner said after he got out of prison. “So I told myself I would not put_my_mom_through that pain again.”

One day he met Professor Mattoni, who was working to rebuild the habitat for an endangered butterfly called El Segundo blue.

“I saw the sign ‘Butterfly Habitat’ and asked, ‘How can you have a habitat when the butterflies can just fly away?'” Bonner recalls. “Dr. Mattoni laughed and handed me a magnifying glass (放大镜), ‘Look at the leaves.’ I could see all these caterpillars(蝴蝶的幼虫) on the plant. Dr Mattoni explained, ‘Without the plant, there are no butterflies.’”

Weeks later, Bonner received a call from Dr. Mattoni, who told him there was a butterfly which needed help. That was how he met the Palos Verdes blue. Since then he's been working for four years to help bring the butterfly back. He grows astragals, the only plant the butterfly eats. He collects butterflies and brings them into a lab to lay eggs. Then he puts new butterflies into the habitat.

The butterfly's population, once almost zero, is now up to 900. For their work, Bonner and Dr. Mattoni received lots of awards. But for Bonner, he earned something more: he turned his life around.

For six years now Bonner has kept his promise to stay out of prison. While he's bringing back the Palos Verdes blue, the butterfly has helped bring him back, too.

Tens of thousands of theatre tickets will be given away to young people next year as part of a government campaign to inspire a lifelong love for theatre.

The plan to offer free seats to people aged between 18 to 26 — funded with £2.5 million of taxpayers' money — was announced yesterday by Andy Burnham, the Culture Secretary. It received a cautious welcome from some in the arts world, who expressed concern that the tickets may not reach the most poor.

One theatre source criticized the government's priorities(优先考虑的事) in funding free tickets when the poor were struggling to buy food and fuel, saying, “I don't know why the government's wasting money on this. The Yong Vic, as The Times reported today, offers excellent performances at cheap prices.”

There was praise for the government's plan from Dominic Cooke of the Royal Court Theatre, who said, “I support any move to get young people into theatre, and especially one that aims to do it all over England, not just in London.”

Ninetyfive publicly funded theatres could apply for funding under the twoyear plan. In return, they will offer free tickets on at least one day each week to 18 to 26 years old, firstcome, firstserved. It is likely to be on Mondays, traditionally a quiet night for the theatre.

Mr. Burnham said, “A young person attending the theatre can find it an exciting experience, and be inspired to explore a new world. But sometimes people miss out on it because they fear it's ‘not for them’. It's time to change this perception.”

Jeremy Hunt, the Shadow Culture Secretary, said, “The real issue is not getting enthusiastic children into the theatre, but improving art education so that more young people want to go in the first place. For too many children theatres are a nogo area.”

When Andrea Peterson landed her first teaching job, she faced the daunting task of creating a music program with almost no money for equipment or supplies in a climate where standardsbased learning was the focus and music just provided a break for students and teachers.

For her drive and creativity in overcoming those challenges, she's been named national teacher of the year.

Principal Waynes Kettler said he's worked with many outstanding teachers in his 22 years as an educator, but Peterson is “just that one step above anybody I've ever worked with before.”

Kettler and others at Monte Cristo Elementary School talk about the ways she has introduced the learning from other classrooms into her music program and her creativity in working around things such as the lack of money for new music.

When students were reading S.E. Hinton's novel The Outsiders in their regular classroom, Peterson helped them write a 30minute play with scenes according to the book. Then they chose three Broadway tunes that focused on race, equality and social justice, the themes of the book. Peterson composed two other songs herself after classroom discussions about the play and the book.

The honor means a lot to residents of Granite Foils. It's inspiring to know that people from small towns even win national honors.

As national teacher of the year, Peterson will spend the more years outside the classroom, as a national and international spokeswoman for education.

Not surprisingly, she is a big believer in the value of arts education. She said it's essential for schools to offer classes such as art or music and physical education because for some kids one of those subjects is the only thing that attracts them to come back to school day after day.

Healthy knees aren't the main consideration in choosing high heels, but new research says chunky heels are just as bad for the knees as spindly stilettos(细高跟鞋).“It takes a long time to feel the effects of knee osteoarthritis(骨关节炎)—and once you do it, it is too late,” said Dr. Casey Kerrigan, leading researcher of the study and associate professor at Harvard Medical School's department of physical medicine.“I compare it to smoking—one cigarette is not painful, but over a lifetime it is. Wideheeled shoes feel comfortable, so women wear them all day long,” Kerrigan said.“They are better for your feet than stiletto heels, but just as bad for your knees.”

In the study, researchers had twenty women wear two pairs of shoes with three inch heels, one with a narrow heel and the other with a thick one. The scientists compared how much pressure was put on the women's knees by both types of shoes. The women also walked barefoot to test normal pressure. The scientists found that both types of shoes applied equal amounts of pressure to the knees. Compared with walking barefoot, the heels increased pressure on the inside of the knee by 26 percent. Increased pressure on the knee eventually leads to arthritis, experts say.

The idea that high heels are bad for your health isn't new—scientists have warned women for years that they contribute to problems ranging from corns to hammer toes, tendonitis, knee pain, sprained(扭伤)ankles and back problems. But in 1998,Kerrigan and a team of Harvard researchers were the first to link high heels and knee osteoarthritis, a painful joint disease that destroys cartilage(软骨) surrounding the knee. The first study looked only at stiletto heels, and Kerrigan said she wanted to study the chunky highheeled shoes she noticed many women wearing. ”This study confirms what we all intuitively(直觉地)know that highheeled shoes of any kind are not good for our health,” said Dr.Glem Pfeffer, a San Francisco doctor and member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons who was not connected to the study.

If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in spring than you are at any other time of year.A famous scientist,Ellsworth Huntington(1876~1947),concluded from other men's work and his own among people in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities.

He found that cool weather is much more favourable for creative thinking than summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year.It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be the lowest in summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.

Fall is the nextbest season, then winter. As for summer,it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

C.is better for thinking than in very warm weather

  D.increases the ability to think

答案 C [根据文章第二段第一句“...cool weather is much more favourable for creative thinking than summer heat.”可直接得出答案。]

55.One possible reason why spring is the best season for thinking is that________.

  A.all nature,including man,is growing then

B.it lasts longer than the other seasons

C.it is cooler than the other seasons

  写作一

A few days before my approaching 10th birthday, when my mother told me my father would come back from the city where he was working,I felt so excited and began even to daydream so much. However,my mother told me he would not bring any gift to me two days later.I began to feel a little disappointed and stopped fancying. After several days I did not expect much but the reunion with my father. So when I saw my tired but smiling father I forgot almost everything unhappy I had experienced. Then out of my expectation,my father took out a totally new dictionary with both beautiful pictures and English explanations, which I still take around me almost everywhere now.

What we hear is sometimes not what we think it is in the end.

more than glad to have such kind of activities, for we not only set up the bridge of friendship with the children in Tibet but also show our love to the children there.
