  [2017·辽宁五校联合体高三年级考试]

Improving your vocabulary can be done at any age and any level of education. Even college students can benefit from

an enlarged vocabulary, which will enhance spoken and written communication as well as providing a deeper grasp of any

language. Often people are encouraged to improve their vocabulary by a major test, but improving your vocabulary can be

  done for fun as well.

Reading more, playing word games and puzzles, and looking up words in the dictionary are all good

  ways to learn new words.

One of the best ways to improve your vocabulary is to read

  more.Reading

is directly linked with a larger vocabulary, especially if you seek out books in unfamiliar styles or about unfamiliar

  topics. Nonfiction in a

  wide variety of fields can

teach you new words and general knowledge,

  but reading fiction

is also highly beneficial. As you read, make a note of

unfamiliar words, look them up, and write down the definition.

Playing word games is a fun way to learn new words. Games like Scrabble and Boggle will encourage your brain to play with words and letters, as well as learning new ones. If you play with an open dictionary, you can encourage people

to try out words they might otherwise be afraid of using. Most word games are interactive, so you enjoy company while you expand your vocabulary.

Another way of improving your vocabulary is to do word puzzles. Most newspapers include crosswords, simple cryptology puzzles, and jumbles that get progressively harder throughout the week.Try to commit to completing all of the word puzzles every day, or at least attempt to finish them. Word puzzles can also be done in groups, especially if you

enjoy competition. You can purchase books of word puzzles of varying difficulty for a different challenge.

A simple way to improve your vocabulary is to use the dictionary.Create flashcards of unfamiliar words and practice them in the train, on the bus, or when you wake up in the morning. Try to practice words in a variety of environments so that you really learn them, and make sure to use the words in daily sentences as well so that you can grow accustomed to using them correctly. If you hear someone using a word you don't recognize, ask him or her about it or look it up.

  [2017·河南省开封市高三模拟考试]

As more and more books become movie adaptations, I can't help but think how this will affect English classes. Thinking back to my years in middle school and high school, I was required to read a number of classics. Today,

a majority of those books are now also movies: Life of Pi, The Great Gatsby, Much Ado About Nothing and

Anna Karenina, to name a few.

Even contemporary books such as The Hunger Games and Harry Potter are gracing the big screen. In discussions with friends, I will often hear them say they are not going to read the book because the movie adapted from it will be out soon, which made me wonder what effect, if any, movie adaptations will have on modernday students. Will the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) encourage them to read the books more carefully or to use movies to supplement their understanding of the text?

The CCSS requires students to provide textbased evidence when reading and discussing a book. By focusing on such evidence, teachers can pull specific details from a book that may have not made the final cut when the book was adapted for the big screen. For instance, after reading and watching The Hunger Games, there were a number of details from the book that were missing from the film.

  A student who

failed to read The Hunger Games would not quite understand

Rue's impact on the games in the same way as someone who

had read the book and remembered all the details that went into her death.

I am not saying the CCSS will stop students from cutting

corners, but I believe if teachers use the support the CCSS

provides, it can be a great roadway to ensure all students are

digging deep into texts and not just hitting the play button.

5.In the past, the author was encouraged________.

A.to read textbooks in the class

  B.to read movie adaptations

  C.to read many classics

D.to see movies in the cinema

6.What effect does the movie have on modernday students

  according to the passage?

  A. Encouraging students to read more books.

  B. Using the movie to help understand the text.

  C. Making some of students read too little.

  D. Helping students to save a lot of time.

  7. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.Teachers can teach students better by seeing films.

B.Students are encouraged to see The Hunger Games.

C.Rue's impact on the games is presented in the movie.

D.Those who only see movies might not understand some details.

8.The passage tells us that the author

  ________.

A.hopes students to see the movies adapted from books

B.thinks the CCSS should prevent students from watching movies

C.urges students to read books rather than see the films

D.tries to ban the CCSS from giving students many choices

  [文章大意] 随着越来越多的名著改编成电影,有些青少年很少再去阅读原著,这对他们的阅读和学习产生了一定影响。

5.C。细节理解题。由第一段第二句“Thinking back to my years in middle school and high school,I was required to read a number of classics.”可知,作者小时候被要求读很多名著。故选C项。

6.C。细节理解题。由第二段第二句中的“In discussions with friends,I will often hear them say they are not going to read the book because the movie adapted from it will be out soon”可知,作者在与朋友讨论时,经常听他们说不打算去阅读原著,因为改编的电影就快上映了,也就是说电影让一些学生读的书更少了。

7.D。推理判断题。由第三段中的“a number of details from the book that were missing”和“A student who failed to read The Hunger Games would not quite...into her death.”可知,改编的电影通常忽视原著的某些细节。

  8.C。细节理解题。由全文尤其是最后一段中的“it can be...hitting the play button”可知,作者提倡教师应遵照课程标准,鼓励学生深入阅读,而不是只看电影。

  Ⅴ.短文改错
