It seems that fate likes to play strange jokes on those who are famous. The manner in which fate saved Clive of India for his mission in history is a matter of record.Downhearted, ill, and depressed, Clive, then a young clerk, placed a revolver(左轮枪手) to his head and snapped the trigger time after time.It refused to fire and he realised that suicide was not to be his lot.A subordinate (下属) took the same pistol from Clive's hand and fired it six times in succession(连续).
A somewhat different but disturbing fate laid in store for Robert Todd Lincoln, the eldest son of the Civil War President.Young Lincoln had received orders to report to Washington. In White House he was told that his parents had gone to Fords Theatre and they had requested that he join them there.Robert Todd Lincoln went to the theatre and, just as he entered the building, he was stretched back by a crowd of excited people, among whom were the stretcher bearers carrying the dying President.
During the administration of President Garfield, Robert Todd Lincoln became Secretary of War.He was a close personal friend of President Garfield and, when the President prepared to leave for a visit to the seashore at Elberton, New Jersey, Secretary Lincoln accepted an invitation to go along. As Secretary Lincoln reached the railway station, he encountered the stretcher bearers carrying out the fatally wounded President Garfield, victim of an assassin's(刺客) bullet.
Twenty years later, as Robert Todd Lincoln entered the Temple of Music in Buffalo to greet President McKinley, the President was carried past him by stretcher bearers.Garfield, Lincoln, and McKinley were the presidents to be assassinated (暗杀), and Robert Todd Lincoln was the only man who was on the scene immediately after all the shootings.

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could to help her threeyearold son, Michael, preparing for a new sibling. They found out that the new baby was going to be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sang to his sister in Mommy's tummy.
The pregnancy(怀孕) progresses was normal for Karen. But complications arose during delivery(分娩). Finally, Michael's little sister was born. But she was in serious condition. With siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushed the infant to the intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital.
The little girl got worse. The doctor told the parents, “There is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst.” Karen and her husband had fixed up a special room in their home for the new baby — now they planned a funeral.
Michael kept begging his parents to let him see his sister, “I want to sing to her,” he said. But kids are never allowed in Intensive Care. However, Karen made up her mind. She would take Michael whether they liked it or not.
“If he doesn't see his sister now, he may never see her alive.” She dressed him in an oversized scrub suit and marched him into ICU. The head nurse recognized him as a child and bellowed, “Get that kid out of here now! ” The mother, the usually mildmannered lady glared steeleyed into the head nurse's face, her lips a firm line. “He is not leaving until he sings to his sister!” Karen towed Michael to his sister's bedside. He gazed at the tiny infant losing the battle to live. And he began to sing.
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray”.
Instantly the baby girl responded. The pulse rate became
calm and steady.
“You never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away”.
The ragged, strained breathing became as smooth as a kitten's purr.
“Keep on singing, Michael”. Tears conquered the face of the bossy head nurse as well as Karen.
Funeral plans were scrapped. The next day — the very next day — the little girl was well enough to go home!
NEVER GIVE UP THE ONE WE LOVE!

Unit 2
Ⅰ.1. 现在分词短语 go into the classroom 在这里作时间状语。
Smith与leave 之间构成主谓关系,故用leave 的现在分词形式 leaving, 此处相当于after he left his office, 故选C项。
5. D 考查分词作状语时,其逻辑主语是句子的主语,a sense of pride 并非see的执行者,故D正确。
还原句子even the small details of life should be considered in a gradual process可知定语从句与先行词之间用in,意为“在……的过程中” ,故用in which引导定语从句,which指代前面的process。
A项“专门的,特殊的”;B项“挑剔的”,be particular about “对……
在倍数之前还可用more than, over, less than等修饰语。
14. B pick out 挑选出; pick up 捡起,接某人。
15. A cut down 消减; cut off 切断; cut up 切碎; cut in 插嘴。
2. B 根据下文的how dependent we were on each other at that moment.
3. A bring one's life to a sudden end
6. B simply
B 1. and 2. that/which 3. into 4. without 5. in 6. to 7. on 8. what
由第一段的“A subordinate(下属) took the same pistol from Clive's hand and fired it six times in succession.”可知。
由最后一段的最后一句话“…Robert Todd Lincoln was the only man who was on the scene immediately after all the shootings.”
The manner in which fate saved Clive of India for his mission in history is a matter of record.
Ⅳ.1. Expectant.
2. To get ready for the worst result.
3. The baby recovered from the dangerous state of coma gradually.
4. A miracle of love.
Ⅴ.One possible version:
March 22,2017, SaturdaySunny
Today is the 22nd World Water Day. In the morning, we had a class meeting to make preparations for the afternoon activities.
At 2:00 pm, we went to the neighboring community to hand out leaflets, calling on people to save water. At around 3 o'clock, the expert made an excellent speech to us on the current water crisis. He talked about the drought and the severe shortage of water in the northwest of China. The speech had a strong appeal to all the students present. After that, we had a discussion with our neighbors about various ways of saving water in our daily life. I suggested turning off the tap immediately after using it, and a middleaged woman came up with many ideas of reusing the water from kitchen.
Now, I have really had a better understanding of the importance of saving water.
