The Speed Ring Skate Club is made up of 20 young Burmese(缅甸人)with a passion for skateboarding(滑板运动)in a country where skateboards are rare.

The skaters first learned their tricks at this park in Rangoon. But four years ago it was destroyed, for reasons that are not entirely clear. Now, these skaters have a choice of improving their skills on poorly paved and crowded streets or making a fivehour journey to the faraway capital, Naypyitaw, where some Japanese built a skate park hundreds of kilometers from the nearest skaters. Akar Bo says the distance means he rarely visits. “We need a good place to skateboard. They should have built this in Rangoon,” he added.

The group has taken matters into their own hands, making a film about their cause that they hope will win over more officials — and draw more skaters to their ranks.

Filmmaker Ali Drummond, a skateboarder from Britain who was saddened by the loss of the Rangoon skate park, says the film has helped them believe their goal is achievable.

“This is Burma(缅甸). No one is going to help us as skateboarders. And, in the past, no one has shown any interest in them. In fact, they'd actually just shown hostility toward them as a group of people,” Drummond said, “So they had no belief in themselves that anyone was going to help them from Burma. I hope this film could change people's attitude to a certain extent.”

To get approval to build a new skate park, the skaters must become an officially recognized sporting federation(联合会) by the sports ministry.

“Of course skateboarding needs a park, so they can exercise and meet each other. But, first of all we need the support from the sports ministry so they can help us out,” explained Aung Din, a former sports official.

The skaters hope to win permission for at least a temporary park when Burma hosts the Southeast Asian Games in December. There, the exposure could help persuade officials and introduce a new generation of Burmese to the sport.

  1. We learn from the passage that in Burma skateboarding is ______.

  A. uncommon

  B. popular

  C. cheap

  D. free

  2. We can infer that Akar Bo is a(n) ______.

  A. visitor

  3. Which of the following is NOT the reason for the group making the film?

  A. To raise more money for the park.

  B. To win support from more officials.

  C. To attract more skaters to join them.

  D. To change the people's attitude. 4. The underlined word “hostility” means “______”.

  A. kindness

  B. interest

A week ago Jeremy Lin slept on his brother's couch. Now the Harvard graduate is an international basketball superstar.

Jeremy Lin, the first ChineseAmerican to play in the NBA, scored 25 points off the bench(替补) to help the Knicks beat the New Jersey Nets on Saturday. On Monday, in his first career start, Lin followed with 28 points in a Knicks win over Utah. On Wednesday, he gained 23 points to help the Knicks defeat Washington Wizards. The result has been Linmania(林疯狂)— with fans from New York to Beijing hailing him as the biggest thing in basketball since Kobe Bryant.

What makes Lin so astonishing is his brief journey from zero to hero.

Lin was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in the San Francisco. His father taught him to play basketball when he was young.

Most star players are spotted as early as high school, if not before, and almost always go on to play for one of the big basketball universities. But 1.91metretall Lin was turned down by UCLA, his dream college after high school. He did not receive any offers of basketball scholarships. He went to Harvard, where he studied economics.

After graduating from Harvard, no NBA team accepted Lin. But after doing well at a summer camp, he signed with the Golden State Warriors in July, 2010. While he did fairly well with the Warriors, Lin was demoted(降级) to a DLeague team three times. He was taken on briefly by the Huston Rockets but dropped again quickly before being signed by New York Knicks in December, 2011.

Before he became a star, Lin had been sleeping on the couch in his brother's living room. One night he was forced to get up out of bed because his brother had friends visiting from out of town.

Now those days are over. Lin has become worldfamous. His photo dominates the pages of sports sections and his game attracts millions of fans. It is his determination and persistence that contribute to his success.

  12. D 考查介词短语。句意:我必须提前告诉你我跳舞不是很好,因此不要对我期望太大。in advance 提前,预先。in peace 和平; in surprise 吃惊地,惊讶地; in sight 在视力范围之内。

  6. D sign up for在此意为“报名参加”,符合句意。come up with 提出,想出; give in to 屈服于; keep up with 保持,跟上。

  4. C 词义猜测题。in fact 前后通常含有对比意味。前面提到无人对他们感兴趣(no one has shown any interest in them),据此可以判断hostility是“不喜欢,敌视” 之意。

  5. D 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的内容可知Aung Din对滑板运动持支持的态度。

  Ⅴ.One possible version:

  Hi, Lazy Bone,

I used to have the same problem! I used to tell myself I would work out later, because I was too busy to have sports, or I was too tired today…. As a result, I never put my workout plan into practice.

As you know, exercise benefits us in many ways. Not only does it improve our health, but also it makes us cheerful and raises our learning efficiency. Having realized the importance of exercise, I work out regularly at present.

I suggest you make a practical workout plan and set aside a specific time each week to do the exercise. You can go in for sports you like and have various sports in a week. Above you, you'd better find a workout partner. In this case, both of you can inspire and monitor each other. Of course, you can reward yourself by treating yourself to some delicious food for every five days you work out.

  Wish you success!
