  第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题; 每小题2分, 满分30分)

  请认真阅读下列短文, 从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。

  A

(原创)About 17 years ago, I started an adult music class at Austin Community College. I already had a private studio of young talented kids, and one adult student who had played some brass instrument in junior high band, but wanted to learn the violin. Leslie was her name and she was my first adult student.

She came to lessons knowing how to read music, but that was about it. After our first couple of lessons, I thought for sure she wouldn’t last. I saw the long, hard battle in front of her, and many times, I must admit, I thought of suggesting that she choose another instrument, something easier, like piano or guitar. Although she was very anxious, she never let it stop her. As I watched Leslie slowly develop into a good violinist, my own ideas and feelings changed about teaching adult students.

Because I started as a child I had never experienced what my adult student had: the burning desire to learn the violin; the will to continue. Those things I had never owned. For me learning to play was the by-product(副产品)of a childhood activity chosen for me by my mother.

After a few years of lessons, Leslie’s skills were growing and I thought it would be nice for her to play with other people, so I opened an adult music class at Austin Community College. Again, the outcome of that experience I couldn’t have imagined either. Besides being a ton of fun for me,

Leslie met three other women in the class who decided after the term was over to get together once a week to play string quartets(弦乐四重奏). I recently ran into Lola(the oldest member of the group who is now in her 70’s)and she said the group still meets regularly.

  56. Before Leslie came to the writer’s music class, she.

  A. had a private studio of young talented kids

  B. knew about the brass instrument

  C. once played the violin in junior high band

  D. didn’t know how to read music

  57. The writer thought that Leslie.

  A. had a gift for playing the violin

  B. was not fit to learn the violin

  C. played the violin better than others

  D. had no difficulty in learning the violin

  58. Why did the writer open an adult music class at Austin Community College?

  A. Because Leslie needed to play the violin with other people.

  B. Because he thought adults learned the violin faster than children.

  C. Because he found a lot of fun in teaching adults to play the violin.

  D. Because Leslie wanted to form a band with other adult students.

  59. From the passage we can infer.

  A. the writer taught Leslie the violin when she was a child

  B. Leslie learned the violin when she was in junior high school

  C. Leslie once gave up playing the violin in order to learn guitar

  D. the writer admired Leslie for what she did in learning the violin

  (2017·南通模拟)

Now came great news! It came from a neighboring state, where the family’s only surviving relative lived. It was Sally’s relative—a distant relative by the name of Tilbury Foster, seventy and single. Tilbury now wrote to Sally, saying he should shortly die, and should leave him thirty thousand dollars, cash; not for love, but because money had given him most of his troubles, and he wished to place it where there was good hope that it would continue its evil work. The bequest would be found in his will, and would be officially handed over provided that Sally should be able to prove to the executors(遗嘱执行人).

As soon as Aleck had partially recovered from the strong emotions created by the letter, she sent someone to the relative’s home and subscribed for the local paper.

For the rest of the day Sally made confusion with his books, and Aleck could not keep her mind on her affairs, not even take up a flower-pot or book or a stick of wood without forgetting what she had intended to do with it. For both were dreaming.

  “Thirty thousand dollars! ”

All day long Aleck was absorbed in planning how to invest it, Sally in planning how to spend it.

There was no romance-reading that night. The children took themselves away early, for their parents were silent, disturbed, and strangely unentertaining. Two pencils had been busy during that hour—note-making; in the way of plans. It was Sally who broke the stillness at last. He said, with excitement, “Ah, it’ll be grand, Aleck! Out of the first thousand we’ll have a horse and a buggy for summer, and a cutter and a skin lap-robe for winter. ”

Aleck responded with decision and calmness.

“You can spend a part of it. But the whole of the capital must be put right to work. ”

“Why, yes. Yes, of course. Have you got it invested yet? ”

“No, there’s no hurry about that; I must look around first, and think, er. . . , I’ve turned it over twice; once in oil and once in wheat. ”

“Why, Aleck, it’s splendid! What does it amount to? ”

“I think—well, to be on the safe side, about a hundred and eighty thousand clear, though it will probably be more. ”

“My! Isn’t it wonderful? Good heaven! Luck has come our way at last, Aleck! ”

Then they went up to bed, but they left the candle burning in the sitting room. They did not remember until they were undressed; then Sally was for letting it burn; he said they could afford it, if it was a thousand. But Aleck went down and put it out.

A good job, too; for on her way back she hit on a scheme that would turn the hundred and eighty thousand into half a million before it had had time to get cold.

  64. Why would Tilbury like to give all his money to Sally?

  A. Because Sally was Tilbury’s only relative alive.

  B. Because Tilbury loved Sally and his family deeply.

  C. Because Tilbury wanted his money to continue its function.

  D. Because Sally and his wife are good at investing.

  65. The underlined word “bequest” in Paragraph 1 probably means.

  A. a gift of personal property

  B. a proof of a person’s identity

  C. a method of getting money

  D. a reason for giving money

  66. What do we know about Sally and his wife after receiving the letter?

  A. They were in deep sorrow and stayed up all night.

  B. They cared little about the bequest and lived their life as usual.

  C. They paid a visit to Tilbury to confirm the truth of the letter.

  D. They had a big ambition to invest the money and make huge profits.

  67. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

  A. Thrilling News

  B. Sally’s

  Distant Relative

  C. The $30, 000 Bequest

  D. A Smart Investment

Many famous actors and actresses who have Oscar wins and nominations(提名)are included, but the film-makers remain keeping their roles in the film secret.

Why has 007 been popular for so long? Professor James Chapman of Leicester University, the author of the book A Cultural History of the James Bond Films, said, “They manage to let each new film meet the changes not just in society but in the popular taste of film culture. That lets each generation get their own Bond. ”

  第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题; 每小题1分, 满分10分)

  请认真阅读下列短文, 并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

  注意: 每个空格只填一个单词。

If you find the ground shaking beneath your feet, there’s an international consensus on how you should act. Earthquake safety boils down to three basic steps:

  1. Drop to the ground.

  2. Take cover by getting under a sturdy desk or table.

  3. Hold on to it until the shaking stops.

If there isn’t a table or desk near you, drop to the ground in an inside corner of the building and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Do not try to run to another room just to get under a table.

If you are outdoors, move to a clear area if you can safely do so; avoid power lines, trees, signs, buildings, vehicles and other hazards. If you’re at the movies or a sports game, stay at your seat and protect your head and neck with your arms.

If you’re driving a car, pull over to the side of the road, stop, and set the parking brake. Avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines, signs and other hazards. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking is over. If a power line falls on the car, stay inside until a trained person removes the wire.

If you live downstream for a dam, you should know flood-zone information and have prepared an evacuation plan. Dams can fail during major earthquakes.

The main point is to try not to move and to immediately protect yourself as best as possible where you are. Earthquakes occur without any warning and may be so violent that you cannot run or crawl; you therefore will most likely be knocked to the ground where you happen to be. You will never know if the initial jolt will turn out to be start of the big one.

  书面表达【参考范文】

To many people, music has always been part of life, and they listen to music on the radio, on TV, on iPad and on the Internet.

As is vividly shown in the picture, the music fan is trying to download songs he enjoys, but every time he wants to download something, the website requires payment first, which annoys him. How he wishes that the music were all free!

Many people download free online music regularly without even realizing they have done harm to others’ right. When we can no longer download for free, we will naturally become dissatisfied. However, as the intellectual property law has come into effect, websites are forbidden to provide free music download, which is certain to benefit the whole society in the long term.

From my point of view, we should pay to download music. The artists work very hard to compose music. If they don’t get paid, they will feel there is very little value in their work. In this case, many composers will lose passion to go ahead and gradually we will find beautiful music nowhere.
