  (2017·许昌模拟)

I’m not so sure I like my friends any more. I used to like them, to be honest. We’d have lunch, talk on the phone or exchange emails, and they all seemed normal enough. But then came FaceBook, and I was introduced to a sad fact: many of my friends have dark sides that they had kept from me.

Today my friends show off the more unpleasant aspects of their personalities via FaceBook. No longer hidden, they’re thrown in my face like TV commercials—unavoidable and endless advertisements for the worst of their personalities.

Take Fred as an example. If you were to have lunch with him, you’d find him warm, and self-effacing(谦逊的). Read his FaceBook and you’ll realize he’s an unbearable, food-obsessed boring man. He’d pause to have a cup of coffee on his way to save a drowning man and then write about it.

Take Andy as an example. You won’t find a smarter CEO anywhere, but now he’s a CEO without a company to run. So he plays Mafia Wars on FaceBook. He’s doing well—level 731. Thanks to FaceBook, I know he’s playing about 18 hours a day. Andy, you’ve run four companies and this is how you spend your down time? What happened to golf? What happened to getting another job?

Take Liz as an example. She is positive that the flu vaccine will kill us all and that we should avoid it. And then comes Chris who likes to post at least 20 times a day on every website he can find, so I get to read his thoughts twice, once on FaceBook and once on Twitter.

In real life, I don’t see these sides of people. Face to face, my friends show me their best. They’re nice, smart people. But face to FaceBook, my friends are like blind dates which go horribly wrong.

I’m left with a dilemma. Who is my real friend? Is it the Liz I have lunch with or the anti-vaccine madman on FaceBook? Is it the Fred I can grab a sandwich with or the Fred who weeps if he’s at a party and the wine isn’t up to his standard?

  58. Who is opposed to the flu vaccine in the text?

  A. Fred.

  B. Andy. C. Liz. D. Chris.

  59. What’s Andy probably busy in doing now?

  A. He’s running his company.

  B. He’s playing golf all day.

  C. He’s looking for another job.

  D. He’s playing computer games.

  60. According to the text, FaceBook tends to .

  A. present another side of people

  B. offer some foods for free

  C. show endless advertisements

  D. get you to more parties

  (2017·珠海摸底)

Some scientists say that animals in the oceans are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings.

The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.

Decibels(分贝)measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect.

Some scientists have suggested setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in the oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales(鲸鱼).

A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals.

The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales’ ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected(被感染的).

Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds are against a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.

Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists don’t think that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the oceans.

  61. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?

  A. The sound of cars.

  B. The sound of voices.

  C. Man-made noise pollution.

  D. The sound of steps.

  62. Which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph?

  A. The same noise level produces a different effect on land and in the ocean.

  B. Different places may have different types of noises.

  C. The decibel is not a right unit(单位)for measuring underwater noise.

  D. Different ocean animals may have different reactions to noises.

  63. Which of the following is TRUE of whales?

  A. They won’t be confused by noises.

  B. They are deaf to noises.

  C. Their ability to reproduce will be lowered by high-level noises.

  D. Their hearing will be damaged by high-level noises.

  64. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?

  A. They will work hard to reduce ocean noise pollution.

  B. They will protect ocean animals from harmful noises.

  C. They will try to set a limit of 120 decibels.

  D. They will study the effect of ocean noise pollution.

  Surrounded by Brothers

I know it is wrong to envy my children. But when I see my sons, Tonio and his younger brother Sam going down a slide together, one’s arm around the other, I know I have missed something wonderful.

Not only did I never have a brother, but also I had no friendships like theirs. My sister was old enough to help take care of me, so she was more a mother than a playmate, and I was more a pest than a friend. A brother would have been wonderful, but it was not in the family planning.

Now I finally live with brothers, my sons, Tonio and Sam. I am watching them build the kind of relationship that I once dreamed about. They go to bed together. When one comes into our bed after a nightmare, my wife and I know that before morning his brother will follow.

Sam manages the world with more ease than his elder brother, whose frustrations often bring him to tears. With a sincere “Smile, Tonio, ”Sam is the one who comforts him. Tonio, on the other hand, has stopped playing with boys at his age who don’t like playing with Sam. They are always backing each other up.

I don’t know what kind of relationship they will have when they grow up. Parents always want their children to have what they never have. I want them to have each other. So I imagine them going to the same college, marrying sisters and living on the same block.

That’s why I was so worried the day Tonio started kindergarten. I felt that I would lose something too. As we headed for school that morning, both boys seemed relaxed, as if neither had any idea that the day was going to be different, that starting then, Tonio would be leaving behind his brother, his best friend, his right arm.

Tonio’s first day was chaotic, with hundreds of children outside looking for their teachers. Before any of us could say goodbye, Tonio disappeared with his new classmates. He turned to wave and then was gone. It was so sudden. Sam even didn’t see him go. Although parents had been asked to ease the craziness of the first day by staying out of the school, I lifted Sam up and took him to Tonio’s classroom, looking for a glimpse of Tonio. Sam spotted him first.

My wife and I didn’t head back home immediately, stopping instead at a coffee shop to treat Sam to hot chocolate. We even let him eat ice-cream with his fingers. Sam was still quiet, so I asked him if he missed his brother already.

He didn’t answer. Instead he asked, “Daddy, is Tonio going to be gone forever? ”

“No, Sammy, ”I said, feeling happy about his sweet question. “Not forever, just until three o’clock. ”

I sometimes think that the greatest thing I have ever done is to help create these brothers. And I didn’t stop with them. We had another child, and for the third time in a row, it was a boy. It wasn’t long before his brothers climbed into the crib(婴儿床)to play with him. I am surrounded by brothers.

  65. What makes the author envy his sons?

  A. A bad person.

  B. An annoying person.

  A. Tonio often encouraged Sam when Sam burst into tears.

  C. Neither of the brothers played with other children.

  D. They supported each other in different ways.

  68. The author was worried the day Tonio started his kindergarten, because .

In the picture, two goats are tied to each other with a rope. They both see some grass in opposite directions, and try to pull to get their own food. They are unsuccessful because the rope is too short to allow them to eat the food at the same time.

The picture is trying to tell us that cooperation is better than conflict. Both of the goats want their food at the same time, which has formed a conflict between them. However, if they decide to cooperate and eat the grass on the left first, and then the grass on the right, they will both be able to get their food. Thus things will turn into a “win-win” situation.

In conclusion, sometimes our goal is not that we get something and the other gets nothing, but that all people get what they want. If we are to succeed, cooperation plays an important role and will benefit both sides. Therefore, it’s essential that we should attach more importance to teamwork and cooperation in what we do.
