  A./;theB./;a

  C.the;the

  答案:B

3.He is only too ready to help others,seldom,______,refusing them when they turn to him.

  A.if never

5.______ no bus,we had to walk home.

  A.There being

  B.Being

  C.Having

  D.There was

  解析:考查非谓语动词作原因状语。there being表示“有”;而being表示“是”。此题中表示存在关系,不选用have。

—______,but she wouldn’t like to attend this meeting.

  A.Yes,she should

  B.So she was

I decided to go back to school in the fall of 2008 after not being happy with my current job and financial status.I obtained my Associates Degree in May 2002 in Commercial Arts. After graduation,I had trouble obtaining a job in that field. For years,I was going from one job to another feeling unfilled, and I was not satisfied with the instability.

I decided to go back to school for either International Business or Psychology.I weighed the pros and cons of both professions and Psychology won.I like helping my friends and family, when they go through hard situations in their life by giving them sound advice and being honest with them. Also,I was interested in“the mind”.

I was searching for online schools because my work schedule at my current job would not allow me to attend a regular class.I was nervous about starting online classes because I heard mixed stories from other friends who were taking online classes.I decided to do it anyway to experience something different.I wanted to find an online school that was affordable and reputable.Through my search,I discovered Walden University, which is specially for working adults who want to obtain a bachelor’s degree or higher. The process of getting accepted was easy, which included writing an essay on why I wanted to attend their school, transferring my previous credits, etc.

I am currently enrolled in the Bachelors program for psychology, and I am paying for college via financialaid loans and grants. This experience has been interesting yet trying as sometimes it was difficult to balance work, school and home life.I learned a lot about psychology and myself. For example,I like writing about current events, relationships and traveling.I thought my English composition was ordinary, but after taking a few classes at Walden University,I improved my English composition and it made me feel confident enough to start writing professionally so I became a freelance(自由撰稿)writer.Currently,I am only three classes away from obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology! It was one of the best decisions I made in my life.

The Highways Agency has made plans to switch off lights on the M1 between junction 10 at Luton and junction 13 at Milton Keynes between midnight and 5 am.The move to turn lights off on the lightlyused Britain’s motorway network was one of the first ideas to appear after the agency asked the public for moneysaving ideas.

“We think there will be a number of operational issues,”said Andrew Howard, the AA’s head of road safety.“Where you can and can’t be is controlled by signals and without lights there is a greater chance that people will make a mistake.”

Brake, the road safety charity(慈善团体),also voiced concern.“Although there are fewer accidents on our motorways due to the way these roads are engineered, when accidents do happen on these roads, they are much more likely to involve multiple deaths and serious injuries because of the high speeds involved,”a spokesman said.“Road casualties are not only a disaster for the families involved, but a huge economic burden,so turning lights off has safety risk and it could turn out to be an inhumane experiment.”

The Department for Transport has been keen to cut running costs and turning off the lights has been successfully tested on parts of the M2,M4,M5 and M27.Switching the lights off is also seen as having the additional advantage of cutting carbon emissions.Similar initiatives have been tried by a number of local authorities on local roads with mixed results.

Powys Council in Wales was forced to ditch its experiment of turning off more than half its 1,400 lights off at night after a wave of protests from the public.Elsewhere many councils have chosen to install equipment which dims lights rather than switching them off altogether.

However,Derek Turner, the Highways Agency director, defended the move and insisted motorists would not be put at risk.“Since 2009 we’ve switched lighting off between the hours of midnight and 5 am on 14 carefullyselected motorways and evidence so far shows that switching off the lights hasn’t had an impact on safety,”he said.“In March this year we also began permanently switching off motorway lights at three sites. The money saved could then be used for other measures on the strategic road network where it would have a more significant safety benefit and potentially save more lives.”

  在英国,有关部门打算从午夜到凌晨五点期间关闭部分高速公路上的灯,对于这种做法,众说纷纭。

5.What do we know from Paragraph 1?

A.All lights on Britain’s motorways will be off between midnight and 5 am.

B.The British motorway network is busy during night hours.

C.Most British people support the move of turning off motorway lights.

D.Cutting costs is the main purpose of turning lights off on motorways.

解析:细节理解题。根据第一段The move to turn lights off...after the agency asked the public for moneysaving ideas可知,答案为D项。

  答案:D

6.What is Andrew Howard’s attitude towards the move of turning lights off on motorways?

  A.Worried.

  B.Indifferent.

  C.Supportive.

  D.Neutral.

解析:推理判断题。根据第二段Where you can and can’t be is controlled by signals and without lights there is a greater chance that people will make a mistake可推断,答案为A项。
