Wherever she goes, Molly leaves her mark. Without saying a word, she speaks to people with her kind eyes. Even when she walks away, she leaves an impression. Molly's mark is a smile, stamped into the ground by the horseshoe at the bottom of her false leg.

A few years ago, Molly was badly attacked by a dog. The dog bit all four of Molly's legs and left large cuts in her face. Molly's owner, Kate Harris, took her to an animal hospital. Doctors there were able to save Molly's life, but soon one of her legs became very infected(感染病菌的).

At first, doctors thought Molly would have to be put to sleep. But Molly changed their minds. This pony, doctors noticed, shifted her weight, and rested her good leg from time to time. Doctors knew that Molly had amazing intelligence, and that she wanted to live.

Several doctors operated on Molly, and removed her infected leg. A false leg was made for her. The leg was a hollow cast with a pole at the bottom for balance. Doctors gave Molly a special horseshoe at the bottom of the leg. This horseshoe she had had a stamp of a smile face in it!

After the operation, Molly walked around on all four legs, as if nothing had ever happened to her! Now, with every step she takes, she stamps a smile in the dirt. But she leaves her mark in other ways, too.

Kate Harris took Molly to the false leg center. There were children there who, like Molly, had artificial arms or legs. They were amazed to see a pony with a false leg. Molly made them smile and gave them hope. Soon, Molly began to visit schools, nursing homes, army bases and hospitals. A book was even written about Molly!

People want action on noise, a recent public meeting in Brisbane showed. Some want technical improvements such as quieter air conditioners or better sound barriers (屏障) around major roads. Others want tougher laws to keep noise within limit from building sites or to require owners to be responsible for barking dogs. But the first to do was a noise complaints system that works.

Brisbane City Council (委员会) receives more complaints about noise than all other problems put together. So it made a survey and found that about half its citizens are upset by noise in one form or another—traffic, pool pumps, air conditioners or loud parties. This inspired the Council to bring together more than 100 citizens one evening to talk through solutions to the problem.

The meeting found the present noise complaints system useless. Depending on the problem, responsibility for noise can lie with the Council, the Environment Protection Authority, one of three government departments or even the police. So complaints often feel they are getting the run-round. When the people at the meeting were asked to vote for changes, the strongest response was for a 24-hour, noise hotline to be the first port of call for all complaints.

The meeting also favored regulatory measures, such as tougher minimum standards for noise made by equipment like air conditioners. This even makes economic sense, as noise is a waste of energy and money. Other measures the meeting supported were wider buffer zones around noisy activities and controls to keep heavy traffic away from residential areas(居民区).

  69. According to the passage, what do people want most?

  A. Tougher laws.

  B. Technical improvements.

  C. An effective noise complaints system

  D. Tougher minimum standards for noise

  70. Brisbane City Council brought together citizens to talk through solutions to the noise problem mainly due to

  .

  A. the result of the survey carried out by itself

  B. a noise complaints system that works

  C. people asking for tougher laws on noise

  D. requirements of an effective noise complaints system

  71. How many regulatory measures against noise are mentioned in the last paragraph?

  A. 3.

  B. 4.

  C. 2.

  D. 5.

  72. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

  A. Tougher minimum standards for noise are necessary.

  B. Traffic, pool pumps, and air conditioners are all the sources of noise.

  C. 90% of the residents are annoyed by noise.

  D. Heavy traffic should be kept away from residential areas.

The nine shorts to b shown range from a Claymation biography of B.B. King to a science fiction adventure set in the year 3005. “Alot of the material is really mature,” Ms. Gardner said, talking about films by the New York branch of Global Action Project, a media arts and leadership-training group. “The choice is about the history of a family and Master Anti-Smoker is about the dangers of secondhand smoke.”

Americans seem to have a lot of concern about losing it.At least that is what you would think from hearing them talk. They use the expression when they feel they are losing control. It can mean losing emotional control,or losing the ability to do something,or losing mental powers.

One psychologist said,“We Americans have many concerns about controlling our lives.Perhaps we worry too much.”

She continued,“In many situations,to say you are losing it eases the tension. It is healthy. And most people who say they are having a problem are not losing it.” People may feel more like they are losing it when they are “down_in_the_dumps”.People who are down in the dumps are sad. They are depressed.

Word experts do not agree what the word “dumps” means. One expert,John Ayto, says the word “dumps” probably

  comes

由文章第三段“This pony, doctors noticed, shifted her weight…”及倒数第三段的“Doctors gave Molly a special horseshoe at the bottom of the leg.”

由第三段的“At first, doctors thought Molly would have to be put to sleep”可以看出:起初,医生认为Molly会毫无疑问地被以人道的方法结束生命。由此可以看出:C项“In the beginning, doctors had planned to end Molly's life.”正确。注意选项所说的“end Molly's life”对应原文的“Molly would have to be put to sleep”。

故选A。

Molly's mark is a smile, stamped into the ground by the horseshoe at the bottom of her false leg.

Recently more than 260,000 netizens have participated in the survey about whether the curriculum of senior high school should be divided into arts and science.

About 46% of the netizens are in favor of the idea that the curriculum should be divided into arts and science. Otherwise, students may have too much to learn, which increases their burden greatly. However, about 54% of the netizens think that it is unwise to get arts and science separated. They believe that it is not good for students’ full development and that they may have a narrow knowledge.

In my opinion, the problem does not lie in whether the curriculum should be divided or not. Actually, some students spend their time and energy mostly on either arts or science, which may have a bad effect on their future. So I would like to suggest that the college entrance examination should be reformed.
