  (2017·江西省赣中四校高三第二次联考)

Studies show farmland in Africa is often lacking in important nutrients. But researchers say a combination of farming methods may help.

Researchers wonder how to increase production without necessarily clearing more land to grow additional crops.American researchers say that can happen with greater use of an agricultural system called perenniation. It mixes food crops with trees and perennial plants—those that return year after year.

Soil scientist John Reganold says,“One of the major problems is that the soils are fairly poor in most of the regions. So how do you grow food on poor soils? There have to be food

production systems that can build the soil and improve the

  yield.”

Mr Reganold says poor soil may have resulted from years

of weathering that washed away many nutrients. He says some

farmers may have done more harm than good.

“They have been actually using farming practices where

they’re not putting in organic matter. They’re not putting in

fertilizers. They can’t afford those things. And it just runs the

soil down.So they’re worsening the situation.”

The scientist says the word perenniation defines three

systems that are already used in Africa. The oldest of the three

is called evergreen agriculture. This is where farmers plant trees with their crops.Farmers in Africa have been doing this for sixty years, but it seems to be growing in popularity.

The method is gaining widespread use in countries such as Niger,Burkina Faso,Malawi and Zambia. The trees are planted among maize (玉米),millet or sorghum crops. They not only add nitrogen (氮) to the soil through their roots, but also through their leaves when they fall off and break down.At other times of the year, the trees can protect plants from strong sunlight.

John Reganold says he knows of one woman who has had great success with perenniation.

“She’s a grandmother in her fifties. Her name is Rhoda Mang’yana and she started using this system about twenty years ago.And her yields initially were about a ton of maize. Now with a good year she gets four tons per hectare, four times what she was getting.”

1.The purpose of the passage is to________.

A.Being exposed to wind and rain.

A.Perenniation mixes food crops with trees and perennial plants.

B.Poor soil is the main problem in increasing food production.

C.Farmers may be more to blame for the present situation.

  D.American researchers first invented perenniation.

4.Evergreen agriculture is popular with the farmers mainly because it________.

A.can build the soil and improve the yield

B.can provide more wood as well

C.is the easiest method to carry out

D.is used for a long time

5.Why does John Reganold mention Rhoda Mang’yana?

A.To show the method is very popular in Africa.

B.Because she is an expert at farming production.

C.To prove the farming method is effective.

D.Because she produced more grains than anyone else in the country.

A year ago Michelle was looking forward to all the joys—and challenges—that being a young mother can bring. Instead the 26-year-old victim of a stroke (中风), was left trapped in her own body—able to see, think and hear perfectly but unable to speak or move a muscle. She was a victim of the devastating “locked-in syndrome”, -sometimes described as “like being buried alive”-a type of brain damage usually caused by a stroke, a bleed or a tumour. This means the only way she could communicate with her husband Rick and their two young children was through moving and blinking (眨眼) her eyes.

Before the tragedy, Michelle was an active mother. She suffered the stroke while bathing her baby daughter, Holly. The only warning Michelle had of the stroke was a series of splitting headache in the months before.

Following the attack, the only part of her body she could move was her eyes, meaning all she could do was look up to say ‘yes’ or close an eyelid for ‘no’. Her family have a board with the alphabet (字母表) arranged on different colored backgrounds. They painstakingly work out which letter she wants by indicating each letter on the board. It allows Michelle to explain how she is feeling and whether she is cold or warm. She sends messages to her family and even tells if her son Ryan has been naughty, giving instructions about which toys he can play with.

Rick, 24, has given up his job as a mechanic to look after their children Ryan, three, and Holly, one, and is now training to be Michelle’s full-time career. Ryan was old enough to know his mummy was unwell but Holly was too young to understand. But she responds really well to Michelle.

To keep her involved in family life, when one of the children needs new clothes Rick will ask for her opinion using the alphabet board. Although it can take minutes to spell out each word the family and nurses wait patiently as it is her only means of communication.

Last month her best friends organized a sponsored running, which raised almost £17,000.

She has been in hospital for almost a year and has left twice, once for her brother’s wedding and once for a fund-raising event.

Doctors say it is hard to predict her future but she is showing slight signs of improvement. She has started to gain control of her mouth and tongue and can now move her head slightly.

  41. The devastating “locked-in syndrome” must be a disease caused by _________.

  A. being buried alive

  B. a kind of cancer

  C. sudden brain damage

  D. the problem of blood

  42. It is true that Michelle ________.

  A. can no longer express herself

  B. used to be a woman in poor health

  C. can manage her own message

  D. is good at talking with her eyes

  43. Arrange the time order of the following events.

  a. Rick gave up his job as a mechanic.

  b. Michelle suffered a series of splitting headache.

  c. Michelle’s best friends organized a running.

  d. The tragedy happened while bathing Holly.

  e. Michelle showed her yes and no by blinking

  A. a-b-c-d-e

  B. b-e-c-a-d

  C. d-b-e-a-c

  D. b-d-e-a-c

  44. The author tells the story of Michelle in order to ______.

  A. inform of a rare disease and draw attention to its victim

  B. describe the terrible life condition of a patient’s family

  C. show the wonderful results of family love to a patient

  D. tell about the ever-lasting truth: health is above wealth

  C

Vampires (吸血鬼), creatures of myth, have been around in one form or another for centuries. Terrifying but also attractive, they are as popular in the early 21 st century as ever, as the current popularity of Twilight series, and its hero Edward Cullen, show.

Vampires first appeared in fiction in the 1700s. in 1895 Irish novelist Bram Stoker published Dracula, introducing the world’s most famous vampire.

But just what is it about these drinkers of human blood that continues to fascinate us? Speaking to Eric Lewis of the Times and Transcript website, academic Deborah Wells said that vampires are “culturally adaptive”. “We create very different vampires to fit different times. Edward Cullen is not the same as Count Dracula,” she said.

Different as they are, Wells believes vampires are “the perfect containers into which we can pour our current cultural anxieties”, Bram Stoker’s Dracula is powerful, yet old and physically ugly. Stoker’s book dealt with fear of the fall of the British Empire, real fears in the day in which it was written.

According to the website Bookrags, today’s vampires have all our cultural desires, money, power and sexual attraction. Represented by Cullen, they are noble, handsome young men whom women find irresistible. What’s more, vampires challenge traditional ideas about death, science and parental authority. This may be why teenagers are drawn to vampire tales.

“In many ways, the vampire story shows up teenage concerns,” said wells. “The emotional intensity (强度) of the relationship with the vampire matches the intensity of how it feels to have your first real love affairs. Your first real love, it really feels like life and death.”

55.The best title for this passage should be_______.

A.Vampires may continue to drink our blood

B.Vampires have been around us for long

C.Why Twilight is so popular nowadays

D.We still like the story about vampires

  A.Anxious but perfect.

  B.Powerful, old and ugly.

  C.Terrifying but also attractive.

D.Afraid of the fall of the British Empire.

57.According to the website Bookrages, today’s vampires_______.

A.desire money, power and sexual attraction

B.may not think highly of parental authority

C.dare to give up traditional ideas

D.are likely to be resisted by women

58.Which of the following statements is true according to Wells?

A.People need different vampires in different times.

B.Our current cultural anxieties are hidden in vampires.

C.The vampire story reflects the conches of the teenagers.
