Recently I came in contact with the true meaning of love. That would have been, Kane, a boy. Kane was the twoyearold son of Jolene, my new neighbor.

At a glance Kane was a sight. He'd been born with hard sticks for legs. And on that morning I witnessed the effect that Kane's physical shortcomings had on his family. But I also witnessed much more than that.

I saw an extraordinary family that embraced this special child, a family that wouldn't allow Kane to know he was different. Jolene had constructed a small cart just a few inches off the floor for his son to get around. Using his hands to move, Kane moved the cart to “go to” any place just as everyone else was able to do. Kane worked that little cart like a master. Kane was a vital focus of the entire family. He was more than just a member of the family; he was the soul. This child was the driver, the motivator, and the founder of much of the interaction.

Much later in my life, I came to realize that God had sent this child to help some of us who just weren't getting what love was all about, even with my limited capacity for understanding at the time that Kane was a highlydeveloped spirit with great wisdom.

Kane demanded attention, but not because of his mobility challenges or other apparent shortcomings. In his mind, he had no challenges or shortcomings. The truth is that he received attention because he was alive and real and had so much to offer.

Kane was and still is a lot of warm and powerful energy sent to us all, so we might learn that love is beyond all things. Kane, a fragile yet lovely baby, was here to teach us all an important lesson. And at the age of two he did just that.

A.It was ridiculous for them to make a cart for Kane.

B.They were greatly brave to face all the difficulties.

D.It was respectable for them to start their own business.

根据第三段首句“I saw an extraordinary ... he was different.”

B.By asking his father to lead him ahead with a stick.

C.By asking his grandparents to push him everywhere.

D.With the help of a babysitter employed for him.

Do you have lunch at school? Do you like having lunch at school? School dinners (that means “lunch”) are a hot topic in the UK these days and there

are lots of different opinions about what young people eat at lunchtime. Some

people think that school meals are unhealthy; some people say that they are much better than in the past and others say that midday meals should be free for all school children.

A typical school dinner costs about 2 pounds a day for a secondary pupil in the UK. There is usually a main course, a dessert and a drink. Parents often pay in advance online. School dinners must include food groups such as fruit and vegetables, protein (for example meat, fish or cheese) and carbohydrate (for example rice or pasta). There are rules about how the food is prepared, for example there are limits on the quantity of fried food.

Martha Payne, from Scotland, started a blog called Neverseconds about her school dinners when she was just nine years old. She posts photographs of her lunch every day and gives the food a grade out of ten. The grade depends on the quality and quantity of the food and how healthy it is. She doesn't always give good grades. Her complaints include too much fried food, small quantities and hair in the food. Many people read her blog and young people from all over the world post pictures, of their school meals on Neverseconds.

Jamie Oliver, the celebrity British chef, is concerned about school dinners. He thinks that they need to be healthier and tastier. Jamie helped to promote Martha's blog by tweeting (在推特上写) about it and Neverseconds became very popular, very quickly on social media websites. On the blog, Martha also collects money for charity. The money is used to provide food for more than 600,000 poor children around the world.

(2016·九江市高三二模)The elephant was lying heavily on its side, fast asleep. A few dogs started barking at it. The elephant woke up in terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety.

That didn't stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.

Parbati Barua's father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer. He taught Parbati to ride an elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant roundup — how to catch wild elephants.

Parbati hasn't always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to a boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old life.“Life in the city is too dull. Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts for days after the chase,”she says.

But Parbati doesn't catch elephants just for fun. “My work,” she says, “is to rescue men from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from men.” And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years. Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land. It is now fighting back. Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill.

The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion. A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant. “Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans,” she said, as she climbed up one of her elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed!

12.For Parbati, catching elephants is mainly to ________.

  A.get longlasting excitement

B.she learned how to sing love songs

C.she had already been called the elephant princess

D.she was taught how to hunt tigers

根据第四段的第二句“After a happy childhood hunting with her father ...”

14.Indian elephants are getting increasingly angry and they revenge because ________.

A.they are caught and sent for heavy work

B.illegal hunters capture them and kill them

C.they are attacked and their land gets limited

D.dogs often bark at them and chase them

根据第五段的第四句“Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for ...”

__2__ When dog owners shout or speak in a strong, sharp voice, dogs often act guiltily and quietly move away from the area.

Recently, researchers found that dogs can look at our faces, and tell the difference between a smile and a frown. The animals were able to recognize a look of approval from one of disapproval.Researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna performed a series of experiments. __3__ They showed the dogs two pictures of either the upper or lower half of a person's face. On one picture, the person looked happy. The other appeared angry. The dogs were then shown images of the eyes or mouths of people they had never seen before.__4__

Once the dogs learned to recognize which image was happy or angry, they could easily identify the same expressions in pictures of any face. Future studies will try to show whether dogs can learn the meaning of facial expressions. __5__

The researchers' findings were published in the journal Current Biology. They provide the first solid evidence that humans are not the only species that can read the body language of another species.
