  Mars One,a group that plans to send humans on a one-way trip to Mars,has announced its final 100 candidates.We spoke to two of the British hopefuls.

  Alison Rigby,35,from East London

  For Rigby,a chemistry graduate,who currently works as a secondary school lab technician,it is a lifelong passion for space that led to her decision to apply.

  “Generally the reaction has been pretty positive from my friends and family since I told them I was down to the final 100,but it’s going to be difficult for my mum.I haven’t told her yet,”she says.Rigby explains that when she first applied in 2017,her mum told her she didn’t want her to go.

  “I am doing this for something better,which will hopefully benefit more people than just staying at home and keeping my mum happy.As for the risk,of course I am scared.It’s something that has never been done before.But we are all going to die,and it’s important what you do before you die,”she says.

  Clare Weedon,27,from Kent,England

  “I applied because I want to be able to say I made a difference to the future of mankind,”explains Weedon,a 27-year-old manager.

  Weedon doesn’t have a background in science,but she is driven by the chance.Weedon’s brother also applied but was not selected for the final 100.“My brother is pretty envious,but the rest of my friends and family are proud and excited.”The only exception is Weedon’s boyfriend,who doesn’t want her to go.

  Weedon thinks it was her teamworking skills that saw her through this far—in her current job she works as part of a group of four,the same size as the planned Mars One crew.But she’s not pretending a trip to Mars is going to be a walk in the park.“When I think about it seriously,I am shocked,”she says,“but that doesn’t put me off.It drives me forward.”

  A.she wants to surprise her mum

  B.her mum doesn’t care about her

  C.she may give up the chance for her mum

  D.her mum doesn’t want her to take the risk

由第三段中的“it’s going to be difficult for my mum”及“her mum told her she didn’t want her to go”可推断,Rigby之所以还没有告诉她的妈妈她成为火星移民项目最后100名候选人之一是因为她的妈妈不想让她冒这个险。

  2.What can we infer about Rigby?

  A.She is not afraid of the trip to Mars at all.

  B.She always tries to make her mum happy.

  C.She feels a strong sense of social responsibility.

由第四段中的“I am doing this for something better,which will hopefully benefit more people than...”及“it’s important what you do before you die”可推断,Rigby有强烈的社会责任感。

  3.Knowing that Weedon was selected for the final 100,her brother .

  A.was full of envy B.was heartbroken

  C.was quite excited D.was very proud of her

  答案:A

由倒数第二段中的“Weedon’s brother also applied but was not selected for the final 100”及“My brother is pretty envious”可知。

  4.Weedon believes she was chosen to be one of the final 100 candidates because of .

  A.her work experience B.her passion for space

  C.her boyfriend’s support D.her academic background

  Ⅱ.七选五

  THINK“ADDING VALUE”(and you’ll get more money)

  Most people either “like” their job,“love” their job or “hate” their job.Everyone wants to make more money regardless of how they feel about their job.The secret to making more money is,focusing on adding value.Think less of what you can have or acquire.1. You don’t always have to do more though we always can do more.What you might consider is “doing differently”.Let me explain.

  1.Do you choose to be happy at work?It’s a choice.And you can do it.It’s a lot of “mind over matter”.Mind what’s important and the rest doesn’t matter.2. When you choose to be happy,you will affect others in the workplace.

  2.3. Michael’s definition of a “drag” is,a person who “drastically reduces all good.”Of course,they have a bad attitude.If you’re this kind of person,you can change.Start being positive.Start by giving subtle and honest praise to co-workers.Just start looking for authentic reasons to give others some praise.It will set you apart from everyone else.People will recognize you as being more caring and more interested in them.Your influence will skyrocket especially if you’re in an environment where there is little praise and encouragement.

  3.Choose what you are going to think.Most people have given in to CNN,ABC,NBC,“the way things are”,society,drama,negativity and the like.It’s time to take back charge of your brain.Get your focus directed.Like Paul said in the Bible,“Think on these things.Things that are true,are of a good report,are honorable,are positive.”4. If you have nothing to read that is positive,send me your email address and I’ll send you a free copy of my “Powerful Attitudes” e-book.Read a little every morning.It will positively and powerfully affect the rest of your day.

  When you change yourself,you will add value in your workplace.Like the late great business philosopher,Jim Rohn said,“You can take out the garbage at McDonalds and earn minimum wage.But if you take out the garbage and whistle as you do it every day,you’re likely to earn 50 cents more per hour.”Add value to your workplace by controlling your own attitude.5.

  A.Start your day by reading something positive.

  B.Think more of what you can do,produce or create.

  C.Just be yourself and create a strong self image.

  D.Are you a “drag”?

  E.Your attitude and your happiness are important.

  F.Fall in love with it.

  G.You will advance faster and in time,make a lot more money.

  1.网上商品物美价廉;

  2.网购可以随时随地进行;

  3.由于产品可能与宝贝描述不一致,可以参考顾客评价;

  4.可以在拍前咨询客服;

  It is acknowledged that Taobao is the first advanced e-trade platform,devoting itself to catering to the majority of ordinary Chinese people.The number of netizens using it is on the increase stably mainly because of its lower price and better quality.To our amazement,people have even been accustomed to shopping online.Another reason is that it is convenient for people to buy whatever they want.Thanks to the express companies,the distance is not a barrier for us to buy things thousands of kilometers away.

  However,we should be cautious about placing an order,because the description does not always correspond with the real item itself.We can go through the comments customers gave first.Though we can’t see the real item,we can consult the customer service who can give you some advice.Once paying for it,we should have patience to wait for the item on the way.
