  .阅读理解

  A

It was an interesting conversation with Paul,my local greengrocer the other day when I noticed the bird feed in his store that has recently appeared. What made everyone feel the need to feed our wild birds?Bird feed has become a regular item on a shopping list as normal as a bag of potatoes.I didn’t just wonder this privately but I asked my reliable groceryman what was going on.Exactly how did the birds make do for so long before we started feeding them?Judging by the popularity of this current consumer pattern I wonder just how much the wild bird food industry is worth. It must be profitable to the local groceryman who replaced a whole row of food for human consumption to make room for it.He smiled at me as if he’d been waiting for these questions for a while and he seemed surprisingly ready for the conversation.

The fact is animals’ habitats are disappearing. We’re cutting and clearing trees to make way for fields for cattle and sheep, creating fields of nothing but bare land. We’re changing the entire ecosystem in the name of big mechanised agriculture and meat production that clogs(堵塞) your heart and eventually kills you along with the wildlife it killed first. Not to mention roads and industry which wipe out everything.“We’re living in a different world,”he said.“Don’t take me wrong.I mean it in the best possible way,but wildlife is a thing of the past.”I’d thought of this concept before but to hear it said out loud by a small shop owner in the west of Ireland jolted me slightly. An earth of the future where species became fewer?Skies, land, oceans empty of wildlife?People living in a sterile(荒瘠的) world? Is that really where we’re headed?

I’d only dropped in to pick up some bread. It was surprising that you could have such a conversation while getting something for breakfast.I told Paul we’d continue this discussion another day.“And a lovely day it is too,”he said.

A.thought Paul earned good money by selling bird feed

B.was uncertain about asking such private questions

  C.knew Paul had answers

  D.was ready to feed birds

  答案:A

解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“It must be profitable to the local groceryman who replaced a whole row of food for human consumption to make room for it.”可知,作者认为卖鸟食利润很大,所以果蔬店的老板把一排食物都换成了鸟食。

2.The underlined word “jolted” in Paragraph 2 means .

  A.puzzledB.shocked

  C.encouraged D.annoyed

  答案:B

解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“animals’ habitats are disappearing. We’re cutting and clearing trees...creating fields of nothing but bare land. We’re changing the entire ecosystem...roads and industry which wipe out everything...but wildlife is a thing of the past”可以看出,Paul不赞成人类肆意破坏大自然的行为,他为野生动物的生存感到担忧。

4.What’s the best title for the text?

  A.Wildlife,a thing of the past?

  B.Paul,my reliable groceryman

  B

The largest land animal remaining on the earth, the African elephant,is of much importance to the African ecosystem.Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a giant plant-eater,it significantly shapes the forest-and-savanna surroundings in which it lives, therefore deciding the conditions of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.

It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it both a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day,it kills small trees and bushes,as well as pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in not only deep tropical forests but also the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces, there are numerous plants in various stages of growth, which attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rain forests for example. In their natural states, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor.By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants create open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large-hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small-sized plant-eaters to obtain their food as well.

Scientists are worried now that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant dies out, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forests and savannas, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

  Ⅱ.七选五

A small mammal lives in the rocky cliffs(峭壁) of Tian Shan,a mountain range in northwest China. But scientists don’t know much about this tiny creature known as the Ili pika.1.

In fact,it had been more than 20 years since anyone had seen an Ili pika. But Li Weidong, who first discovered the animal, and a team of volunteers combed the mountains looking for the animals.2.

“They found it hiding behind a rock, and they realized they had found the pika,”Tatsuya Shin,a Chinese naturalist said.

Li was studying diseases in a mountainous region of northwest China when he first discovered the 8-inch mammal in 1983.3. In 1985,he found two more pikas. When researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences took a closer look at Li’s discovery, they confirmed that it was indeed a new species.

In the early 1990s,scientists estimated(估计) that there were about 2,000 Ili pikas running across mountain cliffs in China. Now there are probably fewer than 1,000.Li thinks that the Ili pika population has decreased by nearly 70 percent since he saw the first one in 1983.

“This tiny species could be extinct anytime,”Li said.“4. ”

Big changes to the Ili pika habitat are probably contributing to the pikas’ lower population. In addition,Ili pikas don’t reproduce often, and other animals are eating grass where they live.Changes in local temperatures have driven Ili pikas to higher elevations(海拔) in the mountains.

Li and others are encouraging wildlife groups to help protect this creature.Li searches full-time for Ili pikas.5. Li is also working to create a wildlife reserve to help protect Ili pikas.

  A.It became endangered soon.

B.They finally spotted one last summer.

C.Lots of animals were discovered in the mountains.

D.Li didn’t know what it was,and neither did the locals.

E.Only three dozen of them have ever been seen by people.
