  Ⅳ.七选五

  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

It’s lunchtime at Washington Preparatory High School in Los Angeles.Parrish Jackson,16,has barely touched her burger and apricots (杏). 1

The apricots are “sour” and the meat is “nasty (难吃的)”,the student says.If it were up to her,she would just have taken the potatoes—they’re close to fries—then headed to the student store for hot snacks and juice.

2 Students throw out at least $100,000 worth of food a day—and probably far more, according to David Binkle, the district’s food services director. That is a waste of about $18 million per year.

But under the country’s school meal rules set in 2017,Parrish and other students must take at least three items—including one fruit or vegetable—even if they don’t want them. 3

“We should stop forcing children to take food they don’t like and throw it in the garbage,” Binkle said.

4 They point to studies that show that repeated exposure to fruits and vegetables leads children to eat more of them in the future. That,in turn, could help prevent obesity and related diseases, said William J.McCarthy,a professor at University of California,Los Angeles. So,the cost of wasted food “is a small investment”,he said.

The concerns over the cost of wasted food have made the School Nutrition Association start working to change the child nutrition law.

“We just want changes that don’t unnecessarily increase cost and force students to take foods they have no intention of eating,” said Julia Bauscher, the group’s president-elect.

5 Juliana Cohen,a Harvard University nutrition researcher, said the rules have helped children—especially low-income students who get up to half their daily calories from school meals—eat more nutritious food.

The solution to food waste,Cohen said, isn’t to roll back the rules but to find other ways to encourage children to eat their vegetables.Working with chefs to make meals tastier and planting school gardens are both ways to do so,Cohen and McCarthy argue.

A.Other nutrition experts are pushing back.

B.She’s about to throw them into the trash can.

C.So why don’t the students choose to eat outside?

D.Many nutrition and health experts disagree.

E.Many experts have been trying to find a solution to this problem.

F.That’s how it goes at hundreds of schools in Los Angeles.

G.If not,the government won’t pay back the school district for the meals.
