  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

I have been fascinated by literature for as long as I can remember.Poetry, prose (散文),novels, and biographies have been my best friends for a long time.I have even written poems and articles in classical Chinese, and drama scripts for the theater festival at my old school.Although I have earned some praise from teachers and classmates,I now realize I might have taken the “urge” to write as the “gift” to write,as the famous writer and translator Qian Zhongshu put it.

My love for literature has continued since I joined Hotchkiss last fall.As I read Chinese literature by ancient masters as well as modern writers such as Wang Zengqi and Shi Tiesheng,I was exposed to a new world of literature. To my amusement,I discovered similar playful imagination in both the poems by Li Bai and Su Shi,and the masterpieces by Washington Irving,Henry Thoreau and Emily Dickinson.I found that Cao Xueqin in ADreamofRedMansions and Ralph Ellison in InvisibleMan both used homophony(谐音) in naming their characters.BorderTown by Shen Congwen and EthanFrome by Edith Wharton both explored the relationship between love and family responsibility, and both stories are set in isolated small towns.

However, historians of the two countries record history in very different ways.US scholars focus on objectiveness (客观性) and accuracy, strictly separating views from facts;Chinese historians,on the other hand, believe the viewpoints of historians are part of history,as they will always shape the moral standards of later generations.I think both ways have their advantages—a view most of my Hotchkiss teachers probably don’t like!

My love for literature has certainly helped my writing in a foreign language. To some extent,I am able to use my experience in studying Chinese as I improve my English writing skills. However,I do realize that at the level of words and characters, the two languages can be very different.I plan to do an independent study on the translation of some of the core (核心) values of Taoism and Buddhism, popular in China but almost “untranslatable” into English.

I’m lucky to be one of the few who have read both Chinese and American literature at a young age.I am determined to take advantage of that exposure for better cross-cultural understanding.

1.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?

  A.The author’s passion for literature.

B.Types of literary works that interest the author.

C.The difference between the “urge” to write and the “gift” of writing.

D.Things that Chinese and Western literature have in common.

  解析:主旨归纳题。本文主要讲的是作者对文学的热爱以及这一爱好对他学习的帮助,故选A项。

  答案:A

2.What can we conclude from the Paragraph 3?

A.The author considers US history books less interesting than Chinese history books.

B.The way US history books are recorded helps young people learn more about moral values.

C.The author thinks US history books are probably more objective than Chinese history books.

D.The author prefers the way US scholars record history to the way Chinese scholars do.

3.In what way does the writer think Chinese is different from American English?

  A.In the value of language

B.In the level of words and characters
